Three "e"'s works just as well and is shorter to type. This post is an example. The edit message is invisible. As is this text that is also after the color tag.

#eee works, unless you are using IE. IE doesn't recognisse #eee

#efefef is also another invisible option

I recommend the full #eeeeee or #efefef as #eee and other abbreviated color codes are actually not fully HTML compliant and various browsers may have issues particularly those that are very strict about HTML now. Which ironically includes most all recent versions of Internet Explorer.
