When I first read the OOC to Ryu Viranesh's roleplay Felicity -A Tale of Thieves I was a bit skeptical. I didn't think a roleplay without combat as its forefront would work to well. But I probably re-read the OOC about 3-4 times within the past few months before I finally decided to test the waters.

Anyway, I was wanting to talk about more roleplays where combat plays a very small role - or no role at all. Have you ever played in a roleplay where combat is not a key factor, and if so what was it about? What do you think are some good ideas for roleplays where combat does not play a factor, and what would drive the roleplay in its place?

I had attempted to host a roleplay a while ago called City of Silversword, although I would soon pass it onto Sheriff Duncan. That particular roleplay was suppose to be about the daily life of politicians in the city and their careers. Unfortunately it never really got off the ground.

After receiving some inspiration from Felicity for a non-combat roleplay, I started to consider a merchant roleplay, but I am not to sure how it would work.

I once engaged in a roleplay in which I played the role of a major terrorist and the person opposite of me played the role of an interrogator, it was essentially a battle of wits and who could break who first.

A Sherlock Holmes RP would be very successful in that respect.

My RP, Vanguard Academy was one such RP where combat was part of the Academy curriculum but never a major part of the plot itself.

Another of my RPs, titled, Of Dragons & Hunters was of the genre 'Slice of Life' with combat as being the RPers choice. It was about modern day teenagers who're reincarnations of the Great Elemental Dragons of the olden times. These children, living together in a household must learn to suppress their draconic urges in order to survive in the modern world where lurk Dragonslayers behind every corner. Modern day Dragonslayers of course.

I enjoy Slice of Life RPs once in a while as they are hugely relaxing and you don't have to worry about jumping into combat the very next second. It allows me to feel myself as an RPer who can do a variety of other tasks. I can slow down here and observe my surroundings better. That's all.

I hate, I mean absolutely hate slice of life school roleplays. I can deal with certain slice of life roleplays, but anything focused on school, especially high school with the big bad jocks and the hot chick that everyone wants to get or whatever, I hate that.

@bk1-7,

I can assure you that creative RPers generally don't make RPs like that, or atleast, as cliched as that.^_^

VA was based on DF whereas OD&H was far from School-Based SoL's. School was a part of daily life, but not the only focus

Well, my personal experience? When an RP doesn't have combat - or at least not a lot of it - the roleplay is more character based. Since you're not in a struggle to keep yourself and others alive, there's not much to do besides think and talk. Makes it a good setting for character growth.

Most of the RPs I hosted on the CyDef RP forums were story driven, character driven RPs. There was combat, but it was mostly problem solving, investigation story enriching roleplay. I actually prefer this better. Not because I can't write combat, I just think storyline heavy RP is better.

@BK: Wow, that would be hugely cliche, lol.

I remember I was going to host a roleplay, but the players never revealed their History. They would reveal their History as the RP developed, so that way not only would the characters be learning about each other but the players would be learning about them for the first time as well.

I usually play/make RPs where plenty of fighting can be found, but usually, fighting is always less than or equal to the story in terms of importance. I don't fight to fight in RPs. I fight because there are plot reasons to fight.

So yeah, non-combat RPs are right up my alley. I don't have any planned for the future though, to be honest.

Ahahahaha...!!

If such an RP does arise, combat won't be far away, although not the typical swordplay that we've written for so long, but instead, street brawling I think.

Now THAT is indeed a unique experience.

It most certainly would be ;) Although I doubt that it would be "street brawling" - "catfighting" might be a little more apt.

The thing about a high school RP that makes them popular is that there's always something to do. That problem where someone disappears off the map - oh no, time to get to class, we'd better go. Nothing to talk about? That test on Friday was preeeeetty intense. And speaking of which, don't you have homework? In fact, the most difficult thing is getting everyone to shut up and go to bed so you can get to the next day.

Most other RPs don't have that level of background action; we focus on the characters and what they're doing at that precise moment. Even generally free-roam RPs can have the problem of making characters too important (i'm the leader! i'm the accountant! i'm important! whoops, life troubles, brb in a few months guys), whereas in a high school RP you're really just a student. Life will happen without you if you're lazy for a while.

I think that might just be what these boards need; something where you can get together 12-15 people, set them loose, and have personal schedules simply not be a problem. This was certainly the formula that led to the success of the RPA.

"Catfighting" sure will be an important part of a two-fold combat aspect that one will get to see in an RL High school RP.

Also, having hosted Vanguard Academy, I must say that there was nothing more freeing than being in an Academy RP where you have to catch up with life as compared to the opposite. You have been a part of it both as a student and as a tutor. I really miss that feeling, I miss the feeling of being able to RP in general. Oh well...!

I remember Combat being a thing of the Sparring Arena only. So, I guess that makes it a Non-Combat Roleplay of sorts? Or does Sparring too count as Combat?

I wasn't a tutor in Vanguard. Rebecca was strictly a student! Albeit a 103 year old student. Also one who could shoot lasers.

...shoot, do I want to play her in this year's EC or do I want to go with my original idea of an Electric-themed punching princess????? Or just do Kai again????????
