How are you enjoying the Book of Monsters Saga so far? (The Destroyer, The Reshaper)?
Tell us what you think before we get heavy into the design and writing for Chapter 3 of the Book of Monsters!

Some comments so far from Twitter:
  • Looks great so far, but we need more informations like why Kolyaban are pissed off, who exactly she is, why Queen create her, etc. A Lore of her powers, the mystic about her breed/she and MAINLY a background story telling her past!
  • Feels too dragged out with /charredpath taking 3 weeks to finish, also a bit predictable. New elder monster, new death.
  • I love it, it's great and dark (which is always nice!) and A LOT darker than the Chaos Saga already. But, lots of plot twists?...please?
  • The Events Are Pretty Good so Far, But Short.
  • Frankly, anything that links this saga BACK to the previous saga is a good thing in my book- yay continuity! And dragon of time!
  • I do like returning characters- seeing Artix in the destroyer saga made my heart swell; would like some story as to what theyve been-
  • Wish it had more of a set theme, like fire for Embersea, nature for Brightoak, etc. Items don't match the release as well, it's just random
  • I liked the Destroyer a lot! But for the Reshaper... I expected something more than 'big bad ooga booga'- like, recruiting Kobalyn- cos there's nothing more angry than a pissed off daughter- and she doesn't really have much of a reason to let QoM kill her people. srsly.
  • I'm sure a lot can agree with change it up after what happened to Aria
  • It needs more rare items release each week for the maps. That would be nice and players wud actually do the quest and not ignore the release
  • Please take note that weekly Saga's don't only include story line only but items too.So far, this Saga was terrible for me.With random items. [We need] a lot more hammers and axes.Back items with hammers/maces.Heavy swords, blacksmith type of armors.Water staffs.

I do like it, but it's missing that wow factor that we got with the Throne of Darkness. The story's alright but I'm finding difficulty caring about what's going on. No matter what happens, we end up winning. The destroyer would have been better if the final fight with Extriki were a challenge. I get that we weakened it using that nature bomb but still, if any monster deserves special abilities it was Extriki. Something like a gradually increasing toxin which deals DoT damage or slowing us down because of the fumes. Instead we got a low-ish hp monster that only took around a minute to beat.

What's happened to Aria in The Reshaper story is something I'm finding difficulty caring about. What's Aria done to make us care? She owns a pet shop but what does that matter? Pets have little to no purpose in game. So much for having them be a perk of upgrading. Now, if Aria had some significant role before, I'd feel more upset about her situation. But I can't sympathize with an NPC that has little to no screen time.

I'd like a reason to care. One that's believable. I don't appreciate our characters being given a personality that doesn't always match the player. Obviously there's difficulty in making that possible but the game's more enjoyable when the person behind the character feels the same as the character in game is supposed to.

If we could get more background info on these monsters, it could greatly improve the story. Perhaps slight glimpses into the Queen's past, but maybe such a thing will happen at a later date.

With Kolyaban's story or The Reshaper, it's highly important to know what happened in the past. The focus now may be Aria but she's just a distraction. Once we deal with that, we have to do something about Kolyaban. This could mean we befriend her or take her down.

I appreciate the serious tone with this new saga. First we have threat of poison to the land and now we have someone who can change anything into whatever she desires. I don't believe Kolbayan is bad but it's possible she's being manipulated by her mother. Are we really sure the queen cares about anything? To answer that question we need more insight on her past. And hopefully that can happen as we deal with her children.

It might be too early to tell if the Book of Monsters will be a good thing or a failure we'd rather not play through again, but it's decent enough to make me want to keep playing the next release.

Aside from story, the things to consider changing are the rep rewards from story quests. They're far too low. I'm sure many already ranked up Monster Hunter already but is it too much to ask for high rep rewards from the story quests? Maybe there's a reason for the low rewards. At least it's no dwarfhold rep. Monster hunter rep isn't bad but there's always room for improvement.

I like the detail and characterization of the Book of Monsters saga, but strength in substance cannot fully compensate for the lack of ambition of the wider narrative. The differences in detail set this apart from the earlier Titans saga but in essence both still seem to be following the Lord of Chaos narrative style.

I don't know what exactly the writers have in mind but it seems to me that key developments like the rise of the Mysterious Stranger and the alliance with Karok and Kezeroth are being relegated to side stories when they could have massive potential as core parts of the QoM story arc. We even have an entire Throne of Darkness saga introducing us to allies against a new and possibly corrupted Sepulchre. Furthermore there are so many interesting characters and plot points which have been seemingly abandoned - the Chaosweaver Queen? The sentient Wolfwing dust? Akriloth? What happened to Desolich anyway? Instead of trying to cram all these into the end as random allies against the QoM, develop them as part of the main storyline instead of following familiar narrative arcs.

I was very excited by the latest BoM release because of Kolyaban and the Darkblood's perspective: that Aria's transformation was a good thing. I immediately thought of DF's amazing Rose storyline, and that perhaps Kolyaban could be introducing the reverse of that concept: monster hegemony after oppression by humans for so long. That would be a truly amazing twist! Lead us to examine all those times we casually killed or harmed monsters for the most mundane of reasons - what did those monsters feel? Aren't their grievances justified? How should we deal with a genocidal threat (QoM and her children) while addressing the legitimate concerns we have ignored for so long? That would be an amazing storyline! Way better that Lords of Chaos 3.0 (yes, 3.0, the Titans were 2.0 and somehow this BoM which tries to reboot things still seems suspiciously similar).

In sum, love the detail but please don't miss the forest for the trees.

I like the scale of the story, I like that we're diving into Darkblood culture, but what I don't like is the main antagonist herself. Honestly, I feel like the Queen of Monsters is yet another throne-warming big bad. I'm not exactly phased by her despite all the monsters she spawns. It's her minions that intimidate me, not the Queen herself. She should be more proactive like actually showing how powerful she is in battle.

I'd dispute the complaint about /charredpath taking 3 weeks, it was really more like 3 zones squashed together. I get there's a sense of progression there, but I feel like it would've been better if it was /charredpath, /charredpath2, and /charredpath3, like how the /bludrut floors are.

Continuity by reintroducing characters (from Brightoak to the Destroyer)? Good.
Making drastic changes to long-existing NPCs when there wasn't enough commit to change Battleon after the Chaos Finale? Not looking too hot.

Given how this second Book is connected to the first Rift story, I'd much rather have characters introduced in the first and second BoM parts to have big roles in subsequent Chapters. There was a strong negative reaction to Serenity being used in DF's Gathering Shadows, although I recognize the value of sometimes using that kind of storytelling. This criticism comes in part from the currently-abandoned hub of Northpointe, the reasoning that seeing a destroyed Battleon all the time would be depressing, and the barricades that showed up in Battleon that have since disappeared again.

Really looking for something more to happen in subsequent chapters, the whole "I'll send one of my children to destroy Lore! Oh they lost AHHHHHHHHHHH" becomes less and less plausible after the second or third try. Maybe multiple entities at once? Something that makes them not mere obstacles.

Also, given how various QoM-related things have been bug-like, I'm predicting that at least one of the next children is a termite eater swarm. Everybody loves* termite infestations!

    *This is a lie

We haven't finished the Reshaper arc yet. But, so far, the Destroyer arc was slightly better. Brentan is a great leader. He follows the phrase 'desperate times call for desperate measures'

These two points are what I want to see in AQW.
What makes DF good in story telling is that you can see that all the NPCs you meet all belong to the same story and not just sharing the same world or some stand along story like some sort of spin-off.

Instead of creating new NPCs that will just be forgotten in a month (except the Throne of Darkness NPCs because it was so well done), it would be better if old NPCs would still be relevant. The story is going this way but there wasn't much build up for Aria in the story unlike Tara who was actually involved in some quests. Aria was just receiving updates in her shop which foreshadows her involvement in the story. But I rather have Aria be involved in other quests that would lead up to the Reshaper event.

In terms of gameplay, it seems that we're still going back to the old style of quests where we have to go back to the NPC at the entrance of the map.
Lessen the backtracking aspect in the game since we have to click so much unlike a 3D game where we can use keyboards.
Have an icon on the top-right corner of the map to access the quests.

Lastly, lessen the number of quests. The Pilgrimage map had a ton of quests that are very similar in structure (Kill these mobs and kill those mobs). It's very repetitive.
I know that gameplay is limited to killing mobs and clicking stuffs but I don't see the reason to artificially lengthen the playing time.
So, lesser number of quests but increase the variety of quests.

I also forgot, one thing that's good about the Saga is how the cutscenes are handled. They're very dynamic and not just a cutscene between people talking to each other.
Let the NPCs show more facial expressions.

The sagas started slowly for me, but once they got rolling, they're really good.
Reshaper is shaping up to be a little more unconventional than Destroyer, which was pretty straightforward (but still good).

Once we see the rest of the Queen of Monsters' children, we should find a way to know who was the oldest of the group and who is the youngest of the group.

So far, Extriki is the largest of the Queen of Monsters' children.

It's good. But I'm more interested in the game as a whole improving, like it would be really cool if I could use DragonBlade of Nulgath with static damage. Test servers still not finished? Eh, I can wait...

Consequences should actually stick. For example, we destroyed Battleon during World War Lore, and yet (although I know it was given an explanation before as an illusion before I believe) it's still standing. I'm also surprised more people aren't bringing up the fact that we used to be a Chaos Lord and brought destruction to several cities and betrayed everyone. Instead, everyone acts like it never happened or didn't matter.

Also, where does the whole Dragon of Time and Champion of Balance thing come in? It was mentioned a few times, but it feels like it doesn't have as much impact that it should have. And as aforementioned, sometimes it is hard to feel like I should actually care if something happens, like some random one-shot character dies. I too would like a reason to care or feel empathy towards the characters.

Other than that, I like it thus far. I'm glad that more previous plot points from the Chaos Saga are being brought back up (chaorruption cure) and characters from the past storyline coming back and playing a large role, and the darker mood fits the storyline, and the increased use of facial expressions to convey emotion. Only other thing I can think of at the moment would perhaps to feature more interesting quests that aren't just constant fighting and beating up monsters, and give certain bosses more special abilities.

They've added Librarium back, I think that'd be a good way to start adding in deeper lore to things like the QoM and the Elemental Avatars and Primordial Beings that have been hinted at.

More Lore is always a good thing in my books

@above We can only access the books if we have their Lore Scroll in our possession as they can't be permanently visible due to no quests to turn those Lore Scrolls in for. The Seed Spitter Lore Scroll did make a mentioning of a "Little Shop of Horrors" parody.

Reshaper arc is a MUCH better arc than Destroyer in terms of story. However, whenever the cutscenes end, the gameplay just isn't fun. Quest lines are boring, with the exact same monsters as before, and even the quest text (which yes, I do read) seem largely uninspired, at least, compared to the cutscenes. This entire release was a glorified fetch quest with no actual info on the status of Aria or what's she's been up to. Felt a bit like a filler release before the war, due to the lack of any meaningful story progression.

Despite these comments seeming mostly negative, I think Reshaper is a step in the right direction for storytelling in AQW. Morally gray choices for the hero, "no character is safe", and well-written dialogue in-cutscenes are all welcome additions to this new AQW saga.

As of right now yes, but in the test servers (So when the re-write is live) the game is able to access items in your bank and use them for things. My books are banked yet I still see them on the shelves in the test server so it's deff. something they could do

I actually enjoy it taking longer, gives everything more time to flesh out. And not only that but the fact the arcs have been released back to back is truly amazing and is how it should be done.

I prefer not having a storyline release then waiting a few months to continue it. Get it started and done then continue on to something new.

The Queen doesn't have to do anything to destroy Lore. We're doing it for her. First, by (possibly) destroying Brightoak's future, and then maybe killing off the Darkbloods. Who's next?

A lot of different plotlines are being juggled right now. Over the past few months, characters here-and-there have mentioned that Drakath and the Queen's corruption are different, and that we lost our powers after entering the Chaos Realm a lot; probably so we don't forget these points. It's hard to tell whether plot-points are officially dropped, forgotten by devs, or just left out because players themselves have forgotten it after so long. Like..

current storylines) Tara, Sepulchure, Queen/Book of Monsters
    1) Desolich and his (suicidal for the dracoliches) invasion of Battleon
    2) Zorbak raising a new young Dracolich army
    3) The prophecy of the 12 or 13 dragons who rule the world many centuries from now (those quests that promoted AQ:Dragons)
    4) Allying with evil-doers to fight the Queen (ToD, Karok, Drakath?)
    5) Mysterious Stranger(s?)
    6) Elemental Titans (I know the story is discontinued, but is their role still relevant)

I enjoy AQW's stories the most when they're character-driven. For that reason, even though Brightoak had so much quality and effort put in, I didn't enjoy it as much, and it's the same with Book of Monsters. The Queen and Extriki just have no characterisation. ToD established a good formula and I was hoping Book of Monsters would kind-of stick to that. The one thing Book of Monsters is missing is that big impact at the end of the story (e.g. Scarletta's identity, how Ziri's amulet works, Xeven/Vath, etc). Even Extriki could have had some big emotional impact, like writing in that he feared the Hero after their first encounter, was frightened of being hurt by Lore, & was aimlessly running away (even though we thought he was intentionally attacking Battleon), and we killed him in that state. It's like the Futurama episode with Fry's dog (if you've seen it): even with a seemingly non-impactful story, you can turn it around at the last moment and blow out everyone's expectations.

Maybe something is planned with Extriki later. Like every AQW storyline. It all gets left hanging, to be continued in the next few months or years. Exos' little saga was good because it was character-driven and it conclusively finished; and I wish that happened more often, like Carnax/Devourer Saga in AQ. ToD conclusively finished, but left room for the characters to appear later on.

Also, thanks for making the Librarium bookcases functional (although I don't know if Lore Scrolls are going to be continued, or who is doing them), and for an entry-point to /thevoid. Great to see inclusion of ancient AQ stuff. I was beginning to think this game was called Dragonfable 2.

    Greetings to everything.

What I would like is that if they are going to make this story, make the bosses more difficult, more special in some aspect, as they had a special ability style Aracara , Kathool, Chaos Manticore.

And that they put the missions that have much more influence, not because but is that they see as simple missions to do, not as in Brightoak, or in the history of the 13 Lords of Chaos, ie that you try to explain the story or at least some parts thanks to the missions . (sorry for this opinion but is that they leave more or less so)

    Thanks for read my comment.

@Zanathos: I agree, quest descriptions should be utilised more. Make it more than fetch this, fetch that. Give some extra information in the quest description, some details about the story, anything more than now, really. It would be a great way to increase story depth without having to add tons of more cutscenes. Make the quests matter.
