Vanguard Academy

IC Thread

The Backstory

It was an age of peace in the World for some time. People were living happily, heroes lazed around in the various meadows, and as for the villains, none were visible. The Knights had started to feel as if the ultimate evil, The Shadowscythe forces had been finally warded away. The skies were clear, and so were the oceans and lands. There wasn't a trace of a single Undead lurking around the villages. It was like a dream come true. However, one man, one of the older heroes was not at peace. Gray Vaedian felt that this was just the calm before the storm and that the war had just started. He tried to warn his fellow heroes, he tried to warn the Knights but they all spurned him out of their way saying that the old hero had finally gone mad and that the danger had passed......forever.

Gray decided to take things into his own hands and with the help of a select few, he established the Vanguard Academy, an Academy which was situated amidst high mountains far from human civilization. It had a massive and well organised infrastructure and the academy campus itself was a sprawling affair. There were tall towers, dormitories and sparring halls. But what for had he built this Academy?

He believed that this very Academy would serve as the foundation stone upon which the heroes of the new generation would stand. Heroes unlike the ones that existed now, ignorant and full of preconceptions. The young heroes that Gray strove to create would be the epitome of bravery, chivalry, determination and sacrifice. And so, making one of his disciples the Headmaster of Vanguard Academy, he left it with a new hope and satisfaction in his heart.

Back home, that which he had feared had happened, houses burned, people lay dead or dying, Knights lay everywhere and the Heroes were nowhere to be seen. This was the condition of the World. As he looked around for signs of life, a big group of people headed his way amidst all the rubble and debris. They had with them, children, young, unaware of the chaos that had taken place, that had destroyed their homes. The people in their helplessness turned to Gray, they sought his forgiveness and regretted their decision of not believing him before. Gray shook his head and told them that it was far too late for them, but for their children, there was a new hope. He told them of his Academy and that the children had no other choice but to go there and train as successful warriors, heroes unlike the ones that Lore had now. What happened after that remained to be seen......

The Academy

Welcome to Vanguard Academy where we strive to excel in every field, be it magic, sword fighting, archery, or even fishing. We have a vast curriculum her ranging from dual sword fighting to alchemy. We have a lot of facilities that the students can avail. Taking into consideration the condition of the outside world, the students are safely housed in well-built dormitories where every room has at least two beds. Accommodation is not a problem. In case the students wish to hone their battle skills, we have a nicely built and equipped sparring hall with spaces for duels and team fights. Contests like Capture-The-Flag are also held here. Additionally, we have a very accommodating timetable where the students get plenty of time to rest between periods. We have a house system too where every house is under the jurisdiction of a warden and all the wardens report to the Head Warden. The total time taken from Initiation to Graduation is four years. Our Headmaster, Bairon Vaedian is a very kind and loving man. And lastly, the students are always allowed to roam around freely on some days. We hope you enroll at the Vanguard Academy where being Heroic is a tradition.

You will be asked to select what course you wish to study for your years in the Academy. Now, the Vanguard Academy offers a lot of courses to study in.

The second year, you will learn element based magic and strengthening magic. In the third year, you will learn combined and frequent magic on an advanced level.

Rogue Arts: You can learn the ways of a rogue in three years. The first year will find you studying sneaking and silent attacks. In the second year, you will learn to put in a few tricks with evasion tactics and in the third year, you will combine all these to make your own style.

Accessible Locations

Academy Building: The building where you'll be attending your classes and periods. It is a really big building with accommodation for upto 2000 students. The Foundation and Second Year courses will be studied on Floors 3 and 4 whereas the Third Year and Fourth Year courses will be taken in Floors 2 and 1 respectively. The University follows very strict rules and students found loitering around on floors without permission will be dealt with strictly.

Sky-Dormitories: This is where you'll be staying. The Sky Dormitories are a set of buildings hovering high above the Vanguard Academy campus by means of a very high form of Wind Magic. It has over 1000 rooms with accommodations for 2 students in one room. There is a common lounge where students can come and talk or discuss with each other. Meetings will be held in the Warden's Halls located on the top floor of the dormitories. There is a specific time for lights out after which no student should be found roaming around the halls. The mess is located adjacent to the dorms. Students are required to use the Portal Rooms provided in order to reach the campus ground although students who can fly may use their own conveyance.

Sparring Hall: This is where students can hold friendly duels to test out their mettle against each other. Fights are observed by supervisors and good fighters might even get recommendations. There are separate rooms for duels and team fights. You can challenge anyone and ask him to be at the hall at the appointed time.

Arena and Stadium(Open only from the Second year): The Stadium is the place where the Inter-house contests are held. The Arena on the other hand is somewhat risky because the contests held there hold no guarantee on your safety. Therefore it is not open to First years. You may however visit the Arena if accompanied by a Third or Fourth Year. Even a Tutor is acceptable.

Vanguard Woods: The woods located to the east of the Academy which were naturally existing in that area. Some part of the woods was taken in and made safe for students' purposes. A noteworthy fact is that the Woods are not cordoned off by means of any walls meaning a person may find themselves outside the campus should they go in too deep. Do remember that the jungle beyond campus territory is highly unsafe and is rumored to be home to a creature known only as The Beast. Capture-The-Flag tournaments are held in this very jungle.

The Great Library: Considered to be one of the two greatest libraries present in the World, this Library houses nearly every book on each and every topic that there is in this world. Students can come here during their free periods or after their classes to go through some books in peace. Students may even issue upto 3 books for a period of one week bu they must return or re-issue the books upon then failing which they can be fined. Strict silence is to be observed in the library.

Houses

Students will be asked to join either of the Academy Houses during the mid-semester period. Students upon joining will be open to certain privileges and Inter-House Competitions.

House of Valiants: You are brave, strong, and stalwart. You stand your ground when all have given up hope. This house features mostly Knights and Paladins. The House building is located next to the arena and sparring hall. This house is led by Aldron Earthshaker, a mammoth of a man.

Benefits of being in this House: Available trainers to expand on the basic techniques taught in Sword fighting training depending on what year student you are. A private training hall located in the basement of the House building. Also, private forges for students third year and up.

Accepted Students: None

House of Guidance: You are the wise, the intelligent, the logical. You think things through before acting. This house features mostly those preparing to be Alchemists, Sages, and Mages. The House building is a large tower outside of the academy walls, standing on the outskirts of the Vanguard Woods. You are lead by Archmage Eoren, a aberration that is bound to the tower.

Benefits of being in this House: A private alchemical lab, featuring everything a alchemist needs to create spells or potions. The lab also features many shelves neatly piled with different herbs and ingredients. Last but not least, a private enchanting hall, with many books specifying different runes and their effects.

Accepted Students: None

House of Pilgrims: There is no way to describe you with only a few words. You are brave when bravery is needed, and are not afraid to draw your blade, but do not go looking outright for fights, to the point where some would call you cowards. You are more spontaneous than those of Guidance, acting with instinct but also using caution when caution is needed. The largest of the three house buildings, the guild hall incorporates stone with nature, offering a quaint feel. The leader of this house is Ateron De’Tylmeran, a medium sized and well traveled man.

Benefits of being in this House: Training in miscellaneous activities, whether it be musical, storytelling, speechcraft, or something else that might be useful. The house also features a private library, including tomes that are unavailable in the Vanguard Library(and that's a very small possibility). Last but not least, it also features a large walk in closet, where there are large amounts of casual wear if one of the house's members wishes to change up their look or needs something to wear to a formal event.

Accepted Students: None

And there you have it. Note that any member can enter a House's building upon invitation from a active member of said house, but cannot access the special rooms like the alchemical lab or forge, save the closet. All students will still sleep in their respective dormitory, seeing as the buildings only feature living quarters for their House leaders.

Extra-curricular activities

Students will go about joining the activities that they want to participate during each year through to its end. Excellence in extra-curricular activities will both increase your skill in the activity and earn respect for your House. Activities include:

Dragon Riding
Horse Riding
Hunting
Fishing
Archery
Enchanting
Sewing
Cooking
Medicine
Negotiations
Blacksmithing/Forging/Crafting
Sewing
Study of Fantastic and Magical Creatures

and the list keeps growing.....

You can just go and join either ones.

Wouldn't Saboteur be Rogue + Alchemy rather than Alchemy+Alchemy?

I'm not entirely certain whether or not I will have much time, but I might be able to squeeze some in. If this doesn't go too fast, I can manage a small character.
I'm thinking of either a sword fighting tutor or a student alchemist.
Which is more in need?

Can you give me an example of the paragraph required for Primary Subject?

And is being a Tutor 'Vanguard Academy' related, or are you expecting us to tutor our fellow RPers in the art of better RPing? I'd like to roleplay as one of the tutors, being one of the 'teachers' who are training the students. However, I'm unable to really tutor the RPers into RPing better, as I still need a lot of practice myself. I'm just making sure.

@TJ

I'm fairly certain Tutors are meant to teach the students in their own disciplines (i.e. sword fighting)

Just a note to any prospective sword-fighting teachers: There is a YouTube channel I know called Skallagrim which contains videos on sword fighting techniques made by someone who actually practices the martial art.

I'd be willing to bring in one of the Valgard's from Asgeir to teach the students sword-fighting, but to also understand the value of courage, honor, loyalty, and tradition (the hallmarks of the Valgard line).

@bk123456789, Fixed it. Thanks. :)

@Riprose123, YES..!! YES IT DOES...!!!

@Legendium, I'd suggest going with a Student as you'll definitely have a bit more openness. Tutors, however, do have their own charm.^^

@TJByrum, The paragraph should have your own understanding of what is sword-fighting. It need not be RL-Oriented. It can be you as an RP character writing about Sword-fighting.

And yes, Tutors are VA Tutors, NOT RP Tutors.

Haah...!! So glad to be hosting VA again...!! :)

So there will be tutor NPCs, right?

Anyways, hard-working nerd alchemist stundent it is then. Must we start as first years, or can we already be experienced, as in second years? I wouldn't mind either way.
Expect a bio up after Friday/Saturday.

Yes.

Sorry but everyone must start as a First Year Student. After all, there can be no knowledge in your Discipline if your Foundations aren't strong.

A Christmas Present for former VA Students.

All your Bios have been preserved here...!!!

But I'd still recommend making new bios. Just sayin'.

@black knight 1234567 I remember facing this question when I first started VA. Gosh, this brings back memories.^^

Anyways, no. There is no uniform for VA. You may wear whatever you want.

A question though, bk. Were you a part of VA in the past...?

Here is my paragraph for Sword-fighting; I've no idea if this is what you require, but here it is anyway.

quote:

The ability to swing a blade is a skill that can be taught to even a child. But to really understand the art of sword-fighting is to understand a way of life. There are those who would tell you a sword is meant to kill, to extort, and to prove dominance. But in its truest form, it is a means to right the wrongs of the world, to protect the weak, and to serve the innocent. The swordsman who follows such a creed will always overcome those who follow no creed. It is through discipline and determination that you will achieve such accomplishments. But to find that skill, to understand true discipline, and to feel true determination in your actions, is something you must devote your life to. It is something that is not only taught, but is found - both in the world and within yourself. It is not only a physical skill, but a mental one as well. You must understand the history of the sword, how it is forged, and how it is held. You must learn how to swing your blade, how to drive it into your enemy, and how to keep the enemy from driving it into you. To block, to parry, to counter, and to riposte. To wield it with one-hand, with two-hands, with shield or with dagger. Only those who can devote themselves to the life will truly understand what it means to be a swordsman.

Because my tutor will be Varan, most of his terminology and ideals on sword-fighting will be borrowed from Varan culture. This may make his classes somewhat different than the other classes. Another note is the fact he will be of the Valgard line, and the Valgard value tradition, honor, loyalty, and courage. These traits will reflect on his students.

@TJByrum, Yes. That's what I will be looking for. That's very well-written and lets me know a good deal about your understanding of Sword-fighting.

Although, a paragraph that big won't be necessary. Just 4-5 lines is enough.
I look forward to your character and his culture. :)

Name: Varick "The Wall" Valgard
Gender: Male
Age: 30
Race: Varan (human)

Appearance: Varick is known as 'The Wall' both by his kinsmen and those he has met, standing an impressive 6 feet and 5 inches. He weighs upwards of 260 pounds, sporting a muscular but athletic body build for his size. He retains the light Caucasian skin color of all Varan, as well as the dark black hair and dark blue eyes most associated with the Valgard clan. He has a full, bushy, beard reaching down to the middle of his chest. He has long black hair that reqaches down below his shoulders, though he most commonly keeps it pulled back behind his hand, almost like a ponytail. He has a stoic and grim demeanor, a forewarning of what he has witnessed.

Armor/Clothing: Varick wears a suit of heavy Varan armor from his homeland.

Skills and Abilities: Varick is, simply put, a warrior. He participated in the Varan Civil War some fifteen years ago, where he was hardened into an expert tactician and molded into the warrior he is today. He is skilled in most forms of weapons, cinluding but not limited to axes, spears, pikes, and maces, but he is most known for his expertise with the sword. Varick is one of the greatest swordsmen Asgeir has ever produced, which isn't surprising considering he hails from the Valgard clan (which is renowned throughout Asgeir as master swordsmen). And like all Valgards, Varick has an indomitable will, due in part for his loyalty and willpower. This means he has a high resistance to most magic, especially mind-altering and illusion magics; this does, however, prevent him from learning magic.

Primary Subject: Sword-fighting
Paragraph on Primary Subject: See here.
Secondary Subject: Blacksmithing/Forging/Crafting (this will be imposed on his students during hit sword-fighting classes)

Personality: Varick is a Varan, and beyond that he is a Valgard. On the outside, he values tradition, honor, courage, and loyalty. His standards are the same as any hero: to uphold the law, to protect the weak, and to serve the innocent, and it is that creed that he lives by. However, Varick is a Valgard, which means his loyalty often clouds his judgement. It is this devotion to specific individuals that has caused the corruption and downfall of Valgard's in the past, and it is one that is prevalent within Varick as well. He highly respects those with the same morals as his own, and will show undying loyalty to such individuals; those who do not share his own morals are still respected, but they do not receive the immense loyalty as others; those who oppose his morals are considered Evil due in part to his black-and-white judgement and he will show little to no respect to that individual, and show no mercy against them in combat. In his training sessions Varick is tough, hard, and imposing; some may call him harsh, but it's all part of his training methods which is directly borrowed from Varan culture. The students who manage to make it through his classes should be proud of themselves, as it is no easy task to mimic the lifestyle of a Varan.
History: Varick was born to Tarro Valgard and his wife, Lyza. Tarro was a veteran of the Heroic Age, one of the many heroes who had driven foreign nations out of modern-day Asgeir and helped it grow into a large kingdom. As with all Varan children, Varick was raised in a brutal and harsh way, often beaten by his superiors, including his father. But he was a Valgard, and this meant he was a natural born warrior. Varick participated in a coming-of-age event that saw all young Varan boys venture out into the wilderness to find and slaughter whatever threats they could find and return with their trophies. Varick returned with a Tuskhog, one of the most dangerous creatures in the Asgeirian wilderness. This made Varick's family proud and he was officially a man.

At the age of 20 Varick began to court a young woman and believed her to be the love of his life, but he was drawn into the Varan Civil War which had already been raging in Asgeir for over a year. Varick was forced to pick up his arms and armor and joined the Free Coalition in a desperate bid to overthrow the corrupt Vinar Clan. The fighting lasted for some time, an it was one of the bloodiest and most chaotic events of Asgeirian history. Varick fought alongside the heroic Koros Jarn, known as the Grey Eagle, and was present at the Siege of Stormhold in the waning years of the war. Varick personally dueled and defeated a number of Planar Vinar's (the High King) Thanes, earning him great renown. He was also present, but did not participate, in the Landsmeet which instated the Borg clan as the High Kings of Asgeir.

Varick decided to leave Asgeir after the war, heading south until he met Gray Vaedian. Impressed by his skill and experiences, Varick was given permission to act as a tutor at the Vanguard Academy. Varick was initially hesitant, but decided it would good to train other warriors in the way of the Varan. He ultimately agreed and has become a Sword-fighting teacher at the Academy. He is known for his harsh, often brutal methods, but he is efficient and reliable.

In TJByrum-Canon, Varick is uncle of Volrun Valgard and is the ancestor/descendant of such heroes as Toren, Valius, and Toric Valgard. He participated in the Varan Civil War, fighting alongside Koros Jarn and instating the Borg Clan as the Kings of Asgeir.

I am currently compiling an article about the Varan and their culture in another topic which I can link at a later date.

If you need filler for lessons and teaching, I would definitely suggest watching a few videos about the topic. Like I said, I know at least one channel which has quite a few videos you could turn into RP lessons. Edge alignment, half-swording, the use of a shield and sword, etc. Even when some of the ideas seem straightforward and obvious, he knows his way around swords and can give insight. You just might want to check it out. Especially if you think that even a child can swing a sword. ;) (Actually, the best weapon to give untrained peasants is the spear; it requires the least training in order to use effectively.)

I like the theories behind Vanguard Academy. When I'm not quite so inundated with the holidays, I'll certainly be reading through the RP with a fine-toothed comb. Not just for when Arthur feels you lot are ready and committed for approval's sake, either.

I'll watch some videos for sure, cause I am interested in knowing more about it as well.

The point I was making about a child swinging a sword was that almost anyone could pick a sword up and swing it, but not everyone can use it efficiently. It was just different method of saying something else. I don't know what you mean about a spear.

@TJByrum, Varick is good so far. Everything's acceptable. Do add in the Appearance and History.

It's cool that you are linking your universes by creating characters who have a relationship with each other.

@Draycos777, Hope to see you soon.

@DaiTigris, No problems. Hope to see you as a student soon.^^

Merry Christmas guys...!!!

Oh and one more thing, Huel Arasth won't be your Batch Supervisor anymore, he might make an appearance but he won't be receiving you at the gates anymore.

@Arthur: Anything concerning Asgeir, the Varan, Ki'gars, or the Valgards are all linked to TJByrum-Canon. This means that all of those roleplays are, somehow or another, connected. It could end up being a mess, and I will need to adjust some things for it to all fit in snugly. One day I hope to take you all to Asgeir, but that's later. For now, let me continue to develop it; it's an ongoing project!

I will edit in the appearance and history here soon.

Quick question, are students allowed to learn how to use other weapons besides swords? Also are they allowed to bring/use family heirlooms?
