I recently was searching through Wikipedia and I found this topic:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_art#Computer-generated

This topic is about Digital Art
And it says NOTHING about Signature Making as a form of it
While sig making is a very much evolved type of art in my opinion. We have at least 4-5 giant forums and many many smaller ones
We have classing systems, tons of different evolved styles, rendering communities etc.
So why are we not on there?
Well, I have a "plan". We put ourselves there!

Everybody who knows anything about how sig making began and evolved and how to explain why and when sig making became a separate form of art, what are the principles, terms, styles etc...
Anything you think would be good for the article, post it!
I want you to please take it seriously and contribute (unless an ArchKnight or a moderator locks it =/)

Document so far:

Origin of Signature Making
________________________________________________
Signature making's name is derived from the art of making signatures to be used on forums, via the internet. Signatures are used at the end of a person's post, or message, to show that it is finished, or to describe or show a thought. That's why signature size has been set to ususally be around 500x100 to 400x150.

The Art
________________________________________________
It most likely started off as a simple copy and paste on Microsoft Paint, but lately it has evolved into a great form of art, although not as large as most types of art. Making a Signature is to [combine multiple elements, such as depth, lighting and flow, to create a unified whole composition] or [manipulate an image using filters, brushes, and combining various technique(s) to create a unified whole composition].

Mediums
________________________________________________
The mediums of Signature making are computer programs. Commonly used programs include GIMP, Adobe Photoshop and Jasc Paint Shop Pro. Many alternate programs are used as elements in your signature, such as Maxon Cinema 4D.

Names
________________________________________________
Signatures are often referred to as "Tags" or "Sigs". They are called Tags as they are used to "tag" the end of your message, and Sigs because that is a shortened form of the word "Signature".

Ranks
________________________________________________
From some point in signature making history (insert year here), Digital Artists established a classing system, which means that they rated quality of each other's works. The today's 6 classes are:

  • Beginner. Beginner is not oficially a class, it describes a skill level of a person totally new to digital art that have no idea of what they are supposed to do. Few people stay beginner for more than 2-3 days, but some can remain in this state for a long time...
  • Novice. Novice is a stage when a person usually already has some idea what he/she is doing. The novice stage surprises with it's complexity - you couldn't find a bigger variety of wonderful and awful works.
  • Moderate. You could say for sure that a Moderate classed person tried a lot of styles already. Moderate is the stage when people learn to control effects, create depth, balance out colors, and many toher things that will help them move on.
  • Intermediate. Intermediate is the stage when a person starts to establish his/her own style. An intermediate classed person has mastered or maybe even perfectioned all of the techniques he/she uses.
  • Semi-Professional. A semi-pro has established his/her own style. Sometimes semi-professional works look novice, sometimes they are beautiful beyond all understanding.
  • Professional. A weirdo.

I'd be happy to keep this here, unless another AK or Moderator thinks otherwise.

Here's what I think:

It has been mentioned on Wikipedia, here. It certainly does not do it justice though. I'll keep looking for more information.
