Wow, that outcome and ... shape and look of the tut look freakishly just like my tag and tut O_o. Uhh, nice job on converting lol. For Gimp, that's a great and very similar outcome.

...I tried it using the same stock and the same steps, etc.

I got confused the the endish, but this is what I (kinda) got:

Oh, and I smudged some parts.

good outcome - as i see from your tag you are not confused - you just used a masking (rectangle) in different areas, that all.

Also - here is my outcome (i skipped two steps)

Yeah, I was thinking about that... but the one from the tut is cool. It's a old guy looking at his hands.

I don't what stock I used :D I got the link from lguan, the make of the PS tut.

Basically it worked very well by just getting any render, painting the background in a suiting color and then just treating it as a stock

On the "Waves" part, I think, compared to the Photoshop version, you need to go to Filters>>Distorts>>Ripple and set it on Vertical.

I think that's what it's supposed to be.

actually I did it with photoshop to try, you can achieve the effect with either ripple or wave in gimp, yet I chose waves since it has a bit more circular look.

however, You can still use the ripple if you want to

I can't seem to get the same results as you. The brush stays the same color when I do alpha to selection and layer masks
