Free pixel art program?

Do NOT say MS Paint.
I've recently gotten interested in Pixel Art, and I was wondering if there might be a free program out there specifically made for the purpose of pixel art. So, I decided to be lazy and ask the Gallery if they already knew of such a program. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps.

adobe photoshop is a great program to use for artwork using pixels.
or you could use macromedia fireworks
or you could use paint shop pro
or you could use gimp
or you could use paint.net
or you could use paint

Paint is very good for Pixel Art. So if you say no MS paint then your out of luck there. Paint .net might work. But your really not gonna get any good free ones made for pixel art. I have actully never heard of ANY "programs made specifically made for the purpose of pixel art." Just go with paint its good for what your doing and its free. (Sumo Paint might work, second page of gallery Q/A for link to it)

paint is the best art software out there, not just for pixel art, but for any kind of art

Besides G.I.M.P. that is. You could just go with G.I.M.P. after all. It has tools for single pixel brushing and anti aliased brushing as well.

Um, If you guys want my opinion... Paint is Good.
But Graphics Gale is Like Paint on Steroids, you dont have to use paint if you dont want to
and you dont need commercial programs if you dont have the money

for simple pixle art mabey but for advanced things that need filters and other fun stuff gimp is da bomb

How can anyone believe such a thing. Paint is limited and can't even do a fourth of what GIMP can do. Show me the best Paint art and I'll show you the best GIMP art and the GIMP art will be drastically better.

However Paint can be used to draw nicly gimp has better interface and tool paint cant even use trasparncy Gimp better to use Paint can be easier but takes longer and harer for NICE art in colors

me mabey not someone else yes and what did tha take 120 hours gimps coloring is way better plus it has a pen tool

Though the first one isn't bad for a digital painting, the second one looks like an image with a crappy pasted background, and Griatch at GimpTalk could blow both of those out of the water.

But the person wasn't done in paint. That's just a picture that was pasted on to a background with lopsided, green flames.

I'm still not convinced. Especially because the characters are amazing, I give you that. But why would such a skilled artist not create a better background. Really, lopsided flames and lgihtning, or whatever that's supposed to be.

If anything, the artist probably pasted in various features of the drawings, as it appears in the Angelina Jolie piece, and then filled in the rest.
