February...

I swear, Christmas wasn't over before I saw Valentine's Day stuff out. Why is that? Are we so in need of a special day set aside for love that we start advertising it before Christmas is over and done with?

I have spent the last week reading all these articles and organizing my older son's Valentine's Day party for his class. I have been bombarded by pink, pink and more pink. (I hate pink, by the way.) Heart everywhere, cards of every imaginable make and theme, rows of candy at the store and the debate on what to get each teacher for this special day.

I had to force myself to slow down and really think about what this day is supposed to mean to us. Not what its origins were, or any cover-ups that followed to make it more religious in some eyes. No, I am talking about what we look at it today, what we are supposed to think about during this time.

Valentine's Day is about emotion. Not necessarily love to the mushy extent, but love nevertheless. Mainly, how we regard each other. Yes, we will all get frustrated with each other, as no two people see anything perfectly alike. And we may even get mad at each other. Too frequently, I see seasoned veterans get mad at the new people on the forums. They are new for a reason. It is inevitable that things are going to be rough. I see it at schools, public centers and churches. Difference in opinions lead to pain and suffering.

So, as I read our not-so-lovey issue for February, I am reminded of what this month of love really should be about. It's not chocolate, hearts and cards. It's not even about going out on dates or actually scoring a date. It's about how we should be treating each other all the time. Deuteronomy, my cat, said it best. If we just loved on people the way we do on Valentine's Day, everyday, imagine what we could change.

So, are you up to the challenge? Can you make Valentine's Day, not just a once-a-year obligation, but a year long commitment to making all that is Valentine's Day, permanent?

Not a truer word could have been spoken. Unless it were to be "Stuff Happens.".

In my Wal-Mart, they literally, already have Easter stuff. Literally.
