The price of power

Prologue

Godrick grasped the shaft that was the staff he held as his hand trembled nervously.
He concentrated and felt the heat build in his stomach as he channeled it up his torso and though his arm. With a loud bang, a large flame sprang to life from his hand and suddenly exploded only to burn his hand. “Aaah!” he exclaimed as he clenched the scorched flesh of his wrist to examine his newly burned hand. “Backfired again eh?” a familiar voice said as Godrick looked up to see his brother Salazar. Salazar was two years younger than Godrick but was the better skilled of the two. Godrick had been training as a mage for the past six years but hadn’t achieved much. Every fireball he had ever made exploded in his face, every gust he ever made never became more than a slight breeze, and every waterball he made only collapsed to a puddle on the ground. Salazar on the other hand had been training as a warrior for four years and was a natural. His swordplay was considered above average and his battlefield reflexes were remarkable for only a fourteen year old warrior. “Unfortunately yes.” Godrick answered. “Don’t worry, I’m sure you will get it eventually” Said salazar with a smile. “Hey guys” said another familiar voice which belonged to none other than Artix, who was a friend to both Salazar and Godrick.
“Hey Artix” replied Salazar. “Oh Godrick, your hand!” exclaimed Artix as he looked to Godrick who was still writhing in pain from his burn. “It’s fine, really.” replied Godrick modestly. “Well, we better get home” said Salazar as he looked to Artix.
Later that night, Godrick lay in bed silently. As soon as everyone else was off to bed, Godrick reached under his pillow to pull out his spell book. He turned to the page which showed the fireball spell. He took the candle from his bedside to read. “The fireball spell, a very simple and basic spell; a perfect spell for beginning mages.” “In order to wield the element of fire, one must not feel anger but have a calm mind.” Godrick felt as if the book were mocking him as he slammed it shut and put I back under his pillow. He rolled over and fell into a deep sleep. He was soon awakened by voice which belonged to a dark figure who loomed over his bed. “I can grant you the power you seek.” said the figure. “who are you?” asked Godrick sleepily. “Do not concern yourself with such a small matter, Godrick” replied the mysterious figure. Godrick was rather scared of this figure as he could sense that this mysterious stranger was very powerful. “Take this, and you shall know a power like no other; young mage” said the stranger. A book suddenly appeared in Godrick’s hands. different compared to his spellbook which lie under his pillow. Gorick looked up to thank the stranger only to discover that he was gone. Godrick felt tired as he put the book on his bedside table and went back to sleep. Godrick awoke the next morning thinking of the previous night and wondering if the stanger and the book were all a dream. His question was soon answered when he looked to his bedside table to see the strange book the stranger had given him, it was black with silver print on the cover which read: Necromancy and the dark arts. He tried to recall the stranger’s appearance but all he could remember was that the stranger wore a dark robe and hood which concealed his face. He opened the book and skimmed though the pages, some of which contained very gruesome illustrations. The book seemed to have an ominous feel to it. Before he could read anything he was interrupted by the sound of Salazar’s voice. “Hey Godrick, something is wrong.” What is it?” asked Godrick “Follow me.” answered Salazar. Godrick sprang from his bed as Salazar lead him outside. Godrick looked around to notice that the air around them was being clouded by a mysterious green mist. “What is this?” “I don’t know.” answered Salazar with tone of concern. Godrick suddenly heard footsteps. That’s when He and Salazar both realized that they weren’t alone. Salazar drew his sword as he charged into the thick green mist. Godrick looked around and realized that he didn’t grab his staff before running outside. “Salazar!” Godrick called into the mist without a response. He looked around to see figures appearing in the mist. Godrick Looked around him and realized that these figures we undead. Fear took over as he ran back into the house to grab his staff. Before leaving his room the mysterious book caught his eye. Without hesitation, Godrick grabbed the book with his staff and fled not only from his house, but also from the village completely. Godrick ran into the forest untill the mist could no longer be seen. Godrick halted and looked around and realized that he was lost. He sat on a nearby stump panicked as he wondered where Salazar was. Godrick was not only very unsure of Salazar’s location and safety but also his own. He opened the mysterious book and began reading to himself………. (chapter one coming soon)

Chapter 1
The road to falconreach

Godrick grasped the shaft that was his staff as a malicious smile spread across his face.
He watched the earth in front of him crumble as gray, aged bone began to appear in it. The Bones began to take shape as an undead warrior was born. Godrick extended his arm out as if to command his newborn minion. The minion was clearly an undead berserker clad in old armor donning two axes. The minion took its strike at the exausted warrior before it while Godrick watched with a smile of deep excitement on his face. Within a matter of seconds, the berserker struck and the warrior that was Godrick’s opponent; was no more. The warrior’s mutilated body fell to the ground while Godrick simply chuckled to himself in delight. It had been ten years since the green mist had invaded his village and his brother Salazar had disappeared. The last ten years of Godrick’s life had been spent becoming stronger, he had always sought power and now he had it.. He traveled from town to town taking on their strongest fighters. Godrick’s appetite for battle knew no limits as he always sought a new opponent. Godrick looked around to see the faces of his audience in shock and disgust as they looked upon the dead body of there once strongest fighter. Godrick looked up at them and they all fled in fear. “Foolish villagers.” He chuckled to himself. Godrick walked on until the village was far behind him. The knowledge of necromancy had granted him immense power, far more power than the magic of any normal mage. Godrick had yet to encounter the mysterious stranger that had appeared to before him on the eve of the invasion of the green mist. He still wondered who the stranger was and wondered where he was now. Godrick was headed in the direction of a town known as falconreach, he had heard much about the town of falconreach and also heard that many strong heroes traveled there. As always Godrick craved a strong opponent. Little did he know that he would soon face a very strong opponent in falconreach. Godrick looked at the path ahead of him as he continued on. “You, there!” a voice called from behind him. Godrick turned around to see a rather scrawny man who didn’t look much older than him with spiky hair and a rather obstinate look upon his face. “Who are you?” Godrick asked in reply. “I am drakath .” replied the man. “Perhaps you should get out of my sight before I make you one of my minions.” said Godrick in a taunting manner. “How dare you, I am heir to the throne!” “I shall destroy you!” yelled Drakath in anger. With a quick and hasty strike, Drakath charged at Godrick. Godrick only smiled but didn’t move. Drakath finally struck Godrick only to watch his sword swish through him like a ghost. Godrick suddenly faded into a shadow and was gone. Drakath looked around in shock and fear. “where are you, coward!?” yelled Drakath in fear while his sword quivered in his hand. Drakath looked down to see his shadow moving. “What are you doing!?” Drakath yelled in horror as his shadow rose from the ground and stood before him. Drakath looked at his own shadow as it stood before him. Drakath’s mouth moved but no words came out as he was speechless. His shadow soon slashed its sword at Drakath. Drakath tried to counter but his sword was knocked from his hand as it flew through the air. Drakath stood shocked, terrified and unarmed as his sword lay on the ground behind him. Drakath’s shadow soon started to blur as it took new form as Godrick’s shadow. The shadow soon started to fill with color until Godrick stood before Drakath once more. “How…..” uttered Drakath in terror. “Run along weakling, and don’t forget to pick up your toys.” chuckled Godrick motioning towards Drakath’s sword that lay upon the ground. “This isn’t over.” said Drakath in anger. Without another word Drakath fled leaving his sword on the ground where it lay.
Godrick finally walked into falconreach and looked at the sign that read: Inn. Little did he know that this where he would meet his strongest oppnent yet………(Chapter two coming soon)
