You can if you want. Creating another is a pain. If you make another character, just level it up to 5 or 7 and then get the level 5 mecha from the shop. The fights on the GEARS games are kind of hard without a powerful mecha and good stats. heh. It's fine on low level, hard in between levels, easier on high levels. I kept my new character at a low level because leveling it up high would be a pain and the fights were kind of easier at low level, too. Because where your opponent would also be at low level so they wouldn't have high attacks or be able to use their powerful stats much. It's currently halfway through level 9. I'll probably get it to level 10 seeing how I'm already more than halfway there, and then concentrate on Mystraven. When you fight Wolfblade, Runehawk, and Mystraven Mecha on low level, they don't really use their stuns, mana shields, and lacerations so the fight actually goes relatively quickly. You might want a stronger mecha, though. At least the level 5 in the shop.
