Retreat

Purple lightning struck in the heart of Swordhaven. The once proud city was now engulfed in flames and covered by purple sky. King Alteon was defeated. After fighting his chaos infection for so long he had finally succumbed to it. Just as he had suffered, Swordhaven had suffered too. His own hands had struck down his eldest daughter, princess Brittany, a pain that crippled both his own heart, and the future of the city. Swordhaven’s only hope, the Hero, had last been seen heading straight towards Mount DoomSkull, where Drakath the Champion of Chaos resided.

Kyle was a warrior who could fend for himself and had traveled extensively through Lore. Usually he tried to earn gold for himself through mercenary work, searching for treasures or uncovering powerful weapons. He had never devoted himself to battling chaos, but had been part of the conflict, having fought in several wars. He was aware of the chaos threat and the moment he heard of chaos forces gathering around Swordhaven he journeyed back immediately. Swordhaven was home, and he had never been gone for too long at any one time. His little brother Micah would worry about him too much, but he always loved hearing Kyle’s stories of his adventures. His eyes would get wider as the stories went on, and he would always creep closer and closer to Kyle as if to hear them more clearly.

As he arrived in Swordhaven he made his way to the inner city and took a moment to look at his ancestral home, which was a large stone building. He had been born there, and generations of his family had called it home for as long as they had lived in Swordhaven. The stonework was old and although there was grime and dirt in places it was still strong. The structure was still as sturdy as the day it was built. Until now he, like almost everyone else, would never have believed the walls of Swordhaven could have ever been besieged. His family still thought the situation was safe enough though, and were even letting Micah run around the street.

Over the weeks that followed Kyle kept himself busy by doing everything he could to keep chaos at bay. He would leave the city gates and hunt any stray forces that he came across, but it soon became too dangerous to venture outside of the city walls by himself. As the weeks progressed the sunsets darkened. Each night the sky was a deeper shade of purple than the last. Chaos rats and spy eyes flew through the city and further infected it with the taint of chaos. While most people became complacent and accustomed to their presence Kyle never relented and swiftly struck down every chaos creature that he laid eyes on.

He continued fighting, even on the day of the royal wedding. As much as he wanted to be part of the ceremony and festivities, and to forget about the danger, he knew that someone had to keep watch. Chaos did not rest, and if all of Swordhaven was resting then it was his duty to remain alert on their behalf. During the ceremony the Chaos Dragon appeared and set Swordhaven ablaze, catching the population off guard. In an instant the city filled with smoke, fire, and the cries of its scared citizens. Kyle saw the dragon fly to the roof of a part of the inner castle and noticed the hero chase after it. The dragon was the Hero’s to deal with, and there was another battle to be fought by others, by anyone who was armed. The fighting was fierce, but had no strategy and Kyle soon realised he had to ensure his family’s safety since no one else would.

Kyle fought through the flames frantically, gasping for breath whenever he ran through a pocket of air without smoke. Chaos encircled him from the shadows and smoke where purple tendrils were hidden and grasped and grabbed at his legs. He managed to run to his home in time to drive back a pack of chaos rats that had cornered his mother and younger brother. He rushed into battle putting himself in between his family and the enlarged chaos rats. A couple of quick clean sweeps of his sword and they lay dead before him. Kyle looked behind to see flames engulfing the front door of his home and smoke pouring out of the windows. Unlike many of the other houses that were now nothing more than ashes, the stone structure remained firm.

Micah was buried in his mother’s arms and she was doing her best to conceal her worry from him. This was the first time in generations his family had been without a home.
“Swordhaven is lost for now, we must leave for the moment,” he said. His mother looked concerned.
“But where will we go?” She asked. Kyle stood there pondering for a minute remembering his travels around lore.
“There is a town called Battleon. Although not as strong as Swordhaven it is the most resilient town I have ever seen. It is one of the last beacons of hope. Swordhaven is not lost forever, but we must abandon it for now. We must retreat now to Battleon.”
