I was planning to look at some old threads to look at suggestions offered by players over the years and compare them to actual mechanics implemented, but I am having a hard time doing so. Are threads that are inactive after X amount of days deleted permanently, with no chance for lookup? If they aren't, is search the only way to look at them, or is there some massive archive somewhere?

It depends on the board. Some boards (mostly General Discussion) automatically purge inactive threads; others like the Pedia boards do not.

You can try using the Wayback Machine to locate old deleted threads.
