EpicDuel: Biobeasts
For the last few weeks, the EpicDuel team has teased about a "big, exciting announcement." Finally, that secret can be revealed:

Titan, Nightwraith, Charfade and Rabblefroth have been secretly developing a new mobile game called “BioBeasts” while also working on EpicDuel. Today we’re excited to showcase the progress we’ve made so far!

BioBeasts will be a free, single-player arcade-survival game for mobile devices where you control a mutating beast, fighting to escape from a robot-controlled laboratory. You will control a variety of beasts as they try to escape from a lab run by the sadistic Alydriah. Defend yourself against a horde of robot guards, laboratory defenses, and hulking bosses as you claw, bite, blast, and bash your way to freedom! Unlock new beasts with special powers and obtain potent mutations to experiment with as the game progresses.

The team is already well into development and have a number of screenshots posted on their shiny new website: BioBeasts.Artix.com! Check it out and peruse the BioBeasts FAQ.

Be sure to post your questions and suggestions on the new site! The team will respond to your questions in a post on Friday (April 17). You can also follow all the exciting new announcements for BioBeasts on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.

Go check out Biobeasts.com ! ~Battle Elf

Seriously? Is this for real?

A quotation of me:

quote:

Why would they even mention it, since personally, I see it has same outcomes as saying something you are not sure of, since the delaying of this announcement, will make players put hopes on it, ending up by saying the announcement about Rabblefroth getting married, I'm happy for him but how is that will change anything about the game, and since the hopes that players hanged on this big announcement that was meant to change players play the game to a better stats, turns out to be Rabblefroth getting married, well that's something.

The rabblefroth's wedding is a great example, I'm happy for the ED team for creating a new game, same with me being happy for rabblefroth getting married, but does this have anything to do with ED? since we are ED players.

I have nothing against this new game, I see it's a great and new experience for devs, but are we interested in a new game? If it was the case, we would be looking for a new game already, better than any AE game in terms of everything, but we are waiting here for ED and other AE games to get better. And I think ED team shouldn't create all this "Hype" about creating a new game because it is frankly their business not ours.

Sweet.

So, regardless of losing more than half of Epicduel community and contributors during the last two years, they decided to focus on a new game.

Well take this: in order to expect some success off a new project, you have to be backed up by a success story.

And Epicduel is not one.

This makes it completely clear that they've given up on Epicduel, despite all it's potential. No point to even post here anymore, this game has been dead for a long time.

All of the above concerns are addressed in the FAQ: http://biobeasts.artix.com/faq/

We are being transparent about why the project was undertaken - backed up with facts, such as Flash decline and move to Unity - and Devs NOT leaving EpicDuel for the mobile project, which is also a short-term project (which is also explained in the FAQ). Give it a read before jumping to conclusions which hold no truth.

I can understand how excited devs are, getting involved in a new experience and etc, but seriously, it was a really bad time for you guys to introduce this new game in, it could've been much better if it was released in artix.com and not ED site, and also if you just made a straight up DN about it without exciting other players who play ED for 2 or 3 weeks for nothing, because not all of them are interested. I'm totally fine with the game but a bit sad about the way you teased us for 2 weeks for something that has nothing to do with ED, and given the fact that players were waiting for something to happen to ED, made a huge confusion, atleast for me.

Dude people aren't leaving Ed cause of flash. Theres no more fun.

Q: "Hey man why'd you leave ED"
A: "Oh because its a flash game. Gonna go over to unity"

.....i dont think it goes like that. Goes more like this:

Q: "Hey man why'd you leave ED"
A: "No more variety, lack of builds, flags are gone, passives were deleted,. Eh, not fun anymore"

I agree with Machaar. This should've been ED related. This isn't fair.

Some constructive criticism: Create an AE design notes for releases like this. These past few weeks could've been used for some really simple yet beneficial features.

I am happy for Titan and co., but why all this stringing up? ED players are the focus group of this new piece or what? If there ever will be ED 2.0 in Unity, what are chances of transferring our accounts there?

Just thinking out loud, don't mind me. Agree with Machaar about the confusion thing.

A ED 2.0 would be exactly what we need. If not that then idk. Just disappointed. This is like telling a group of AmericaN Football Players how an Australian Soccer Team is doing.

I agree with Machaar about the whole teasing thing. It was heavily implied that this surprise was ED related. I feel it was an excuse for players not to be mad at the update.

Great, teased players for 2 weeks about something that has nothing to do with ED, isn't that cute.

Expected the big tease to balance the game that is full for strength build with many ranks, but I guess you guys just don't care anymore.

If we waited until today to announce with no prior hints, people may have been even more confused.

So Nightwraith tweeted this, I don't want to reply there because he doesn't reply anyways and I can't express all my opinion there , so I decided to give my detailed response here to clear any confusion.
Since Biobeasts is another AE mobile game, like AQ dragons and Battle gems, sure these mobile games were announced on AQW's site, but I'm sure the announcement of these game didn't create all the confusion, since devs there went out and clear, without teasing players for 80 years.
Yes, I agree, prior hints are a great way to prepare your players for an "Announcement" but really this announcement is big for you not for us. And I would like to insist again, I would be extremely happy if this game was announced in Artix.com instead of ED's official site, and ED devs didn't create that huge hype about it in this critical period of time, where all ED players are concerned about ED. I would say it's the wrong time for such announcement, I hope this doesn't proove the fact that ED team doesn't check what players think or express because it's a very critical thing.

Aside from the negative feedback, I don't want to turn down the devs, I'm extremely happy for you, and I wish you good luck, and I'm sure all ED players will support you by playing the game, and I frankly after all the hype and the false excitement, I believe you should give ED players an early Beta. Looking forward to play the game.

I also like how they have to add the While working on epicduel, because obviously they know that the players think/possibly know that they're not putting much time into ED, which is obvious by the updates.

Hi everyone,

We're all thrilled to hear all your feedback on Biobeasts!I'm going to go ahead and clear up some confusion. If you'd like to learn more about the new AE mobile game, check out the Biobeast website!

quote:

It was heavily implied that this surprise was ED related. I feel it was an excuse for players not to be mad at the update.
First of all, the release was announced on most of the AE sites, today's DN post shouldn't be unexpected as the team has done the same for other new AE games. The reason Biobeasts has been hinted at in the last couple weeks is because it's being developed by the ED team. The new game is set in the EpicDuel universe and will give the devs experience in Unity to expand future possibilities (while avoiding the restrictions of flash)!

quote:

A ED 2.0 would be exactly what we need.
Personally, I think it's better for the devs to master Unity first with Biobeasts than make a unrefined EpicDuel 2.

As for EpicDuel updates, there will be a full road-map DN post about EpicDuel's future and a balance overhaul will be coming in the next couple weeks.

Thanks,
Battle Elf

it looks like a bait of AE in the mobile sea, if they get success with this, then they can plan better the future of ED. however this is a market strategy of the company, not exactly a "big announcement" for the ED players.

So basically, we're expected to play other games besides EpicDuel even though it's marked on the EPICDUEL design notes, you should obviously not think that it relates to ED because we don't care about it

So basically, EpicDuel is screwed, so hopefully AE can get some extra cash with this game and hopefully try to bring ED back, if it fails, sorry(not really this game isn't supposed to be good anymore) and we only care about original AE games like AQW and AQ

Not an excuse when it's a fact. AQW is doing a server rewrite, similar to Omega, just to be able to implement more stuff. But not everyrhing can be implemented even then.

Flash was never designed for games, or rather, not as big as AE. Adobe has now dropped support for Flash, so it's a dead platform. Game may have been good, but it doesn't mean Flash was just as good - unless the excuse "engine limitations" doesn't bother people. Because when we say that phrase, it's due to Flash.

Mobile market is booming, and has been for the past few years. The company has been moving to mobile for a reason, as well as Unity - which is cross-platform, thus working on all devices. More devices which can play it = more players; unlike Flash which is limited to PCs - unofficial Flash support via a mobile browser, isn't exactly smartphones supporting Flash.

Wow... not sure what to say...

If Dev's has really given up, the least they can do is listen to the players for once and than if it still doesn't work out, do as you like!

And i don't understand why mobile game?? Aren't there enough mobile games out there! What's so special about ED making one?? Why can't you just focus on what you got. Before you end up screwing both the places.

We know what's booming. And if Dev's really want to get into it so badly, then they should focus on making their present browser games work on mobile too. Not abandon them and start making new mobile games! If we want to play mobile games, why come here?? Why play AE mobile games?? It's not like you're the only one making or anything... We come here for a reason and you're apparently taking that from us... Just so you know.

It's like anything we say is useless. Like Dev's got some shield on their eyes/ears.

P.S : http://www.biobeasts.artix.com/ The website is down!

Why no EpicDuel Mobile? Also addressed in the FAQ:
quote:

Q: Why are you developing this and not EpicDuel 2 or EpicDuel Mobile?
A: Since the EpicDuel team is still very new to Unity, we decided to develop a small-scope mobile project to learn the basics of the platform. So far, we like what we see. Unity is far more powerful than Flash ever was and we’re learning more every day.

A project of the scale of EpicDuel 2 would be a monumental task. By focusing on a smaller project, we can avoid scope-creep and work through the entire process from conceptualization to a public launch quickly, building our team’s confidence toward larger projects.

We talked about the name game with the Devs, and making EpicDuel work on Mobiles, would take approximately two years of work - whilst EpicDuel itself has no releases, that is. Nothing. By then, players would likely leave due to no releases alone - making it even more unnecessary. No AE Flash games will be getting the Mobile treatment, because it would take a couple of years if you still hope to release content whilst rewriting the game to work on Mobile. Flash itself doesn't have a great deal of time left - it's a dead platform, believe it or not. HeroSmash and OverSoul sounded like promising games, but came out during the period when Mobile market started picking up, and Flash games were facing the decline - thus resulting in very few players, and barely any Staff working on them.

Look up "is Flash dead yet?" on Google, and have a read on it. It'll tell you the basics, unless you wish to learn more about it - then you can research how it relates to the gaming industry, and the effects of Adobe dropping Flash support, including that on mobiles.

Well, players are't exactly asking too much. All we want is some decent balance (Jugg for me), some of the most wanted features(like ballyhoo, co-founder, get passive back etc) and stop screwing the already existing features. (Good example would be faction system. Absolutely killed it.)

the flash is not an excuse, its because the browser games is not dead, runescape and others games still have thousands of online players. the people don't out of epic duel due mobile games and flash death, they leave because the game have inside problems. (e.g: everything too expensive for low lv players + lack of ways to get credits)

also don't even try give a way to support bets early was the critical error in my opnion. the devs probably knows nothing about sports...

Yes, and it must also be coincidence that all AE Games suffered in the same time period, which is 2010 onwards. Must have been the problems in all the games, and players deciding to leave at the same time - despite data gathered by the AE, and other gaming industries, saying otherwise.

I mean, AQClassic went from 6K players during downtime, and 12-15K during release days, to just over 1K for both. And the decline occurred around 2009 - but it can't be Flash and better games coming out, and mobile market booming. Just a couple of thousand players gradually left over time.
We are being transparent about the issues we are facing. If you keep denying the fact Flash is dying, then you can't really explain why the whole company is moving to Unity and Mobile gaming alike. This is the exact reason - if you choose to refute it, without doing prior research, that is your choice.

idk where you get yours statistics, but according to this site http://www.bigfishgames.com/blog/2014-global-gaming-stats-whos-playing-what-and-why/

only 36% of the people who play game play in smartphones, 68% of players is adults, and the average age is 30, however the devs keeping turning ed in a kid game (e.g: removing the impaled heads from frysteland), not allow bets, don't fix internal problems and then blame the flash and mobile boom, as if the pc gaming also is not booming..

e.g: league of legends
2012 12 million players
2014 27 million players

nice try to hide the devs bad moves with this mobile boom excuse...
