Removal of passives was one of the things that scared players off because it shows a certain type of mindset. The kind of mindset that goes "There isn't enough variety in this option, so lets remove it" rather than "There isn't enough variety in this option, so lets improve it". That mindset is not necessarily still held, but it definitely was detrimental to the game. The most important question to ask oneself when making a large change like that: "HOW will this accomplish what we want it to accomplish." The way this change was handled, its as if the devs just assumed it would add build diversity without actually considering how such a change was going to accomplish said goal. Now, speaking to you the players: If you guys want the truly good, truly competitive PVP game you say you do, you guys are going to have to deal with a serious upheaval of what you think EpicDuel is. You're not going to like how foreign a new EpicDuel is at first, and you're going to feel like it's a completely different game mechanically (because it will be, if done right). It will be unfamiliar, and you will start out bad at the game. You will lose a lot of matches. You will need to completely rethink everything. This is something you're just going to have to get used to, and in the end you will enjoy yourself significantly more for it, as long as you keep an open mind. Your 95% winrate builds would be out the window and never coming back intentionally, and quickly nerfed when they do. Things would be different. Be aware, be prepared, have an open mind, and embrace it.
