Funny thing though, mundane characters are a blast to play amongst the strange and powerful, and make a story very compelling. The Hobbit, for example.

Personally, I find overly powerful characters are best left NPCs and/or opponents. What's the fun of playing a character that can shift into low gear and roll over opposition in front of them with minimal effort? Where does the player cooperation come in? Alignment conflict, despite the fact that they need each other? Or, if one plays an overly powerful character and others do not, the difficulty of the adventure needs to be cranked up to levels practically suicidal in nature for the more reasonably powered individuals.

I recall in younger days, I wanted to play characters that had a good advantage over everyone else's. The term, back in the day, was Munchkin. Characters that had massive abilities or paragon stats or mastery of various types of magic, coupled with a Stark-esque bankroll and some connection to the ruling class (known or unknown, secret or openly), that allowed them to accomplish whatever they wanted to and dominate the other PC's in the process. I believe that we're all guilty of it, one time or another. A phase, like pimples or neon hair. As I became a more mature player and writer, I realized that munchkin gaming was ultimately self indulgent, lacking substance or notable story value. A character that rises to greatness is ultimately more fulfilling than one who starts out that way.

Give me the flawed hero, or the "Mission Specialist" type. I'd much rather play Batman than Superman any day.

I do like playing an ''npc'' character. The sort of supporting, static character who helps the protagonist along, but with some very odd attributes. Say a good Nazgul Ringwraith; doesn't stand 'steamroll' chance against elves, wizards, Maiar, Aragorns and so forth, but has great combat potential--provided one knows how to use it. A skilled swordsman and a fairly okay sorcerer is what a Nazgul Ringwraith would play as. Such a class opens up much possibility to describe real martial and fantastic martial technique, which I like to do. The hobbits won't allow me to story-tell masterful swordfights and magic shootouts.

It's not that I want to have immense advantages over others, but I simply want them to work hard, work creatively to be able to bring down my character(I find magic is quite cheap and lazy, so magic resistance is the standard story-obstacle). Additionally, I enjoy world-building and reading actual history. In actual history, people are really quite well armed and powerful sometimes. Looking at Cortez and his 200+ against the indigenous empires, Commodore Perry and his cannon-armed ships in Japan, the Imperial British Maxim gun equipped troops in Africa, etc. And it certainly took great strategic planning to use technology or diplomacy when one was so very outnumbered.

The colonial/imperial period is what I take as model in developing my own lore, which I then add underworld and mystical elements. 1500-1922 is really fascinating technology-wise; you have swords, metal armour, cavalry, artillery, rapid-fire, slow-fire guns, stone-age tech and all sorts of ironclad ships in the centuries. I also want what people perceive to be usually bad guys to have a chance at glory instead of eternal failure in fiction. That's the stories I like, stories of high adventure, great discovery, shocking battles and afterlife/eldritch interaction. I keep it in my head to try for such a storyline when picking characters for roleplays.

My idea of compelling story is 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea(Book), Journey to the Center of the Earth(Book), Pirates of the Carribean.

Proverbial nail's head is on the other side of proverbial plank, that Sigil drove into ours! No one here favours overly potent characters. People here only disagree as to how powerful a character must be to be accepted. Bastet's character wields no ranged ability(Sigil's character can out-brawl her through technique), Drayco's is generally vulnerable to everything a human is, and neither is proof against non-mystical, mundane projectiles. (Elephant hide is pierced by mere arrow, dragon's likely not different) Regarding Bastet's knock-out punches, an ordinary human can do the same with throat punches.

What? Batman mundane? Ignoring the fact that Batman has kicked Superman's butt a couple of times, he is not only a millionaire, but also a genius inventor. Hardly mundane, after all, he is a superhero.

I think Keystone needs to stay off the hard ones for abit:p

Also, if you check Arche's bio, you'll notice that she is much weaker than Kit, slightly stronger than Raiu and would lose in a one-on-one fight against Articis. She would win against one of the Fon twins, but against both it'd be a close call. She is hardly "OP"

Also a fact that some seem to be missing is that, natural talents =/= experience in battle.

I could go on a long spill about that, but I am trying to write a post atm:P I just say that I respect your opinon, but, my own differs. I'll also point to Hollow's as a Rp that wonderfully bends strong and not as strong characters together in a story, one which actually forces characters to fight together and against eachother. This RP has no such plot(none at all really), so there is no need for the characters to fight. Any such action is then the RPer's choice, and the irl parallel action would be like the small guy(no offense Apoc:P) picking a fight with the big guy. No to say he can't win, but if he does lose, it was his fault.

Batman was born into money. That aside, he is an example of a normal human, dedicated to self improvement. When he loses (and he does), he regroups, plans, and comes at the same problem from a different angle. He is without special powers, and within the human range of ability. Batman is the very essence of a successful, driven, mundane character - capable of great things.

And that's billionaire, with a B. Multi.

If the rest of the post has made you a touch defensive, maybe introspection is in order. We've all gone through that stage. It seems to be a question of "years RPing" more than it is "years old" generally, I've come to observe.

Defensive only about the Dragon characters, I think we can work things out with them at full intended potential. I get quite excited in explaining things, so my words may appear more aggressive/defensive than actually is designed to be.

My own goal is not to grow a character in this roleplay, but to have a supporting character that brings out potential or inspire plots from others.

To be honest, Remaint, though I think your character is a bit much for something like this, the concept is an interesting read. I am a fan of originality, amongst other things.

The mundane vs the fantastical

They are two very different genres and types of storytelling. I think I've also grown to prefer the mundane, though I still have the "guilty pleasure" of seeking something fantastical every once in a while. Superman is fantastical and if you love guys punching other guys through planets, more power to you. Every summer I enjoy a few blockbusters because of the mindless action (not that everything fantastical is mindless, but it is easy to become mindless due to depending on the action to pull you through. I used to watch 'Bleach' but fell off it when Ichigo went through two insane-trainings within a three-episode period. "I got more power! I beat enemy A! But enemy B has even MORE power, so I'll just ALSO have to get MORE POWER!!!")

With the mundane, characters have limits and constantly hit them and rather than necessarily work through them they work around him. The enemy's stronger than me? Outsmart him. He's smarter than me? Be more cunning. Typically, I see those stories depend more on characters and their growth/interactions rather than just what they can physically do, which I find more enjoyable in the long run. One of the reasons I loved Death Note was the battle of wits between Light and L as they tried to outplay each other. Light had the advantage in "power" with the Death Note, but it was far limitless and forced Light to work within certain boundaries. Meanwhile, L had more resources with the investigators but was fighting the unknown.

(A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones works so well because the characters fit the mundane but the story itself weaves in fantastical elements. Lord of the Rings does the same as the protagonists are not the wizards or other worldly powers but the humble Fellowship, especially the hobbits). I would classify both stories in "mundane", tho.

Liking either is a just a preference, and while I believe Sigil is correct that those with more experience tend to lean towards the mundane, there's always those perfectly content with indulging them with the fantastical from time to time.

As side-notes: Batman and Superman have been kicking each other's butts depending on the universe/timeline. It's up to the writer at the time who would win. (I like Batman but have a gripe with the writers/fanboys who claim he'll always win because "he's Batman" and "he can prepare". Breaks my suspension of belief with the guy if he's constantly punching out gods and the like. Just because you're prepared doesn't mean victory is guaranteed. Lex Luthor is always prepared for Superman and is about as smart as Batman, yet he almost always loses.)


Last thing I have to say is that I def enjoy RPing more when my character and I are at the disadvantage. Make me be more creative to keep him/her alive while remaining with the realm of possibility (and a bitter farewell if it comes to that).

I didn't anticipate how mundane Afina meant when I submitted my bio because of the setting(bloody Lore, we get such powerful characters in the AE games), and I was the first to do so, so there weren't examples, then I edited it in the format of Afina's own Sana when she was submitted. Looking at Elemental Championships, the power afforded to Woyadei seemed all right. There's funnily enough, another 5'5'' tall, mounted lightning and glaive wielder with even better crowd-control abilities(Starflame13's own Elysia, Storm-Bringer).

The roleplay began without commands to alter things. Truthfully, I wasn't(and still not sure) sure how was I to do the 'support character' thing, but Woyadei's actions led to some fun observations and that's good. Also good to hear originality was achieved; you don't see many zombie-conquistadors in high fantasy!

In roleplays, I aim to throw an odd wrench in the machine. Dragons and wizards don't threaten my characters, but ordinary musketeers and archers do(speaking of this, what type of arrows do Sana shoot? Not "Silver" or "Elven", but Bodkin? Broadhead?). My characters would attempt to make peace with vampires and other horrors instead of running or fighting them. My characters begin in the colonial period instead of the feudal period. Things like that.

Hello hello! Been awhile since I've been in an RP, and I've had this itch to be in one since I started college. Anywho, here's my thief:

Name: Daniel Thatcher, goes by the nickname "Thatch"
Age: 26
Race: Human

Appearance: Thatch stands at a height of 5'11 with a head of short messy brown hair and a pair of green eyes. His body is rather rather slim yet muscular in build from his years of running and clambering about as a thief.

As of a thief, Thatch is no stranger to wearing the color black due to his nightly escapades, so you'll often see him in dark colored clothing. Currently he's sporting a thiefly get up which includes a black long sleeved tunic and black trousers, a pair of worn black leather boots, and a pair of personally made black gloves. Over his tunic he sports two black leather vambraces, and a similar black leather chest piece for protection. The leather armor covering the front of his torso is held up by straps which wrap around his back, and these straps also hold up a pair of specially made sheaths for two hatchets. Lastly over all this, Thatch wears a plain black satchel over his right shoulder that rests at the left side of his waist, and a black hooded cloak which conceals his hatchets.

When Thatch thinks he might be spotted during his work, he'll wear a random mask. His current one is a white mask with a bored looking expression.

Skills: As a thief, Thatch is pretty agile and skilled at a number of things regarding his "occupation." He's skilled at picking all sorts of locks, good at parkour to a certain extent from clambering up rooftops, and decent at sneaking about. Due to jobs going bad and running into not so nice thieves, Thatch also learned to handle himself in a brawl with his twin hatchets and his off hand dagger. He's also got a good arm capable of tossing his hatchets and grapple at things, and loves trying out new knots with rope. Oh, and he finds great pleasure in his hobby of knitting and sewing. Oddly enough, he's awful at pick pocketing, so he tends to burgle more often than not.

Spell(s): Thatch isn't one of the most magically inclined people around, but he did learn one spell to aid in his thievery. He simply calls it "Muffle," and it can be cast on a number of things. The spell simply deadens the sound waves around the object, making the sounds that the object create only capable of hearing within a few feet. Thatch also fondly calls the spell "Uninhibited Glass Breaking Time."

Gear: Leather Chest Piece and Vambraces: Simple leather armor that can soften blows slightly, and gives a slight buffer between a blade and Thatch's flesh.

Twin Hatchets: A pair of menacing hatchets that along with slashing, are suited for tossing at people and things. They tend to reside in the specially made sheaths on Thatch's back

Coil of Rope: A 60 meter long rope that has been coiled and tied together, because you can never have enough rope! It's tied around one of the straps of his chest piece, and hangs to the right side of his waist.

Dagger: A simple curved dagger that rests in a sheath that is strapped to the thigh of Thatch's left leg, is covered by his tunic.

Satchel: A black satchel that contains a number of Thatch's things. Such things include a pouch of (un)lawfully liberated coins from people, a sewing kit, a lock picking set, a grappling hook tied to fifteen meters of rope, and a small mallet that is wonderful at shattering regular glass.

I have been swimming in fantasy media since I was young, so I guess I could throw my two cents in in this conversation and speak for my character.

I definitely prefer the fantastical, though I always keep an eye on my characters. I intended Rajiri to be strong, but not overpowered. An ally to be potentially gained for the mundane characters, someone who is so deeply rooted in the fantastical elements of the world that her very backstory involves not being accustomed to civilization. A character on the other end of the spectrum compared to those who aim to gain strength through the course of the story, starting with a repertoire of powers that is ample and restricted at the same time. Rajiri, as I envision her right now, is intended to experience a moral journey during the various plots that will be created as this roleplay hopefully continues. I do not intend to be a hurdle in the balance of characters, rather helping others develop instead.

Strangely enough, I much prefer Batman to Superman.

@Draycos: Just to specify, the "birthright" Rajiri's referring to is the fact that she believes nobody but those who carry the blood of dragons with them should be allowed to speak the draconic language, not tolerating anybody else.

I'm liking Thatch already! All that black is no coincidence, he's Blackbeard! (or was that Teach?) If not the pirate himself, then he's Blackpants! Good character bio, it's concise and charming. Did you know axes bounce quite a bit after they've hit a surface? Use that!

(As Daniel is a thief, I wouldn't mind him attempting to steal from my character, in case you made him so willing)

Huh, I actually didn't know that! Haven't really done much with hatchets to be honest, and thanks for the wee bit of praise! Hehe. I'm intending for Thatch to not really steal from the croup here on the grounds of him possibly being scared of these people, and two, it's tad rude to steal from the party. He will happily peruse everyone's belongings though.
