Not totally satisfied with the dress yet... I'm not sure what to do with it. Anyone have any ideas?

Hey, I feel like for the dress I actually liked the look of the first version a bit more. I think if you bring the second version's length to the first version you'd be onto something cool!! The problem w the second version (imo) is it's a bit too plain, the second has the borders on the neck and bottom that kinda break it up and the belt's in a less similar color range to the dress than the bow (the dark blue which isn't in the dress anywhere else compared to the light purple which is similar to the bottom gradient) is which is a bit more visually appealing.
This is just a bit of a model qualm but I feel like the eyes seem a bit too far spaced apart or maybe it's the lack of nose, but something about her face seems a little odd to me. I'd say try to squeeze the eyes a bit more together or something (or actually, now that I'm thinking about it, the eyes look a bit like they're just mirror images of each other. change the highlight on the right eye so it's on the right so you're not getting that crosseyed effect)

Anyway, I'm not too active on the forums, mainly sticking in my thread, but I'll try to give my C/C from time to time on this thread if you want lol

Yes, I would love if you could give advice from time to time! Not many people patrol this area of the forums (Crystal Lion being the most common one in this thread), so it'd be appreciated!

Alright, so I took your advice about the dress and eyes. The eyes were changed to be a bit closer, I fixed the mirror, and added a nose line. For the dress, I basically just made the first longer like you suggested. I also made a version of the first dress where it was layered, and had slightly thicker straps, so I'd like opinions on which is better.

Thoughts?

Try to put the thicker straps and volume of the layered first dress' skirt to the current version of your first dress. Keep the darker borders that mark the collar and skirt.

Alright! So with the update from Project: Heroes to Project Broken/World, Willow is getting a small change, mainly eye color and changing her outfit a small amount.

Krieger is getting a weapon, a lance/sword hybrid thing. The guard is probably going to get changed. For the record, it's nearly six feet long.

Krieger himself is done with his base model, and needs clothes before showing him off.

The most recent version of Experiment 217 is as follows:

Getting shoes of some kind next, then maybe better hair? Either that or starting her darkness form, heh heh.

Our last character is another male, about as old as Willow (18-19). He needs a name soon. I'm pretty sure I have an outfit idea for him, I just need to make the base model first.

As for the Duel, I was incorrect in saying Battlemage vs. Duelist; It's supposed to be Duelist Vs. Lancer. Lancer is done being modeled, Duelist just needs her weapons. The battlefield itself is done being made. After Duelist gets her weapons, I'll rig them up and start animating, hoping to have it done by thanksgiving (since I'm working on... what, six characters at once? Woo)

As modeling gets done and rigging gets started, I start to think about a few things that i'll need before I can actually make the first episode of Project Broken/World.
Namely, voice actors and a composer(s). Both of these are extremely important. If you or someone you know wants to try out their skill with either, or if it's someone with experience looking for exposure, please direct them here, it would mean a lot.

Getting ever closer. Let's keep moving forward.
And, for the record, thanks to all of you that have supported this project in any way. It really makes it worth it. So...thanks. I'm glad you're here.

Now I suggest you space Willow's eyes slightly, they look too close together.

Be sure to post a link to the Duel when you're done. It will be good practice for you.

Currently i'm working on rigging up Dualist and Lancer, which is about as fun as rigging is, and i'm working on modeling/concepting Experiment 217's shadow form.

As of now, the main change (other than color) is the shape of the eye. Instead of a large oval shape, they become a much smaller circle shape. She also loses her mouth, and her eyes are smaller in general, along with longer hair. She's also going to get claws.

However, I still don't feel like that's quite enough. Not sure what else to do, however. My one idea is to make the dress longer to hide her feet, and have her hover slightly above the ground.
Still, tinkering with concepts.

Hopefully we can get a nice gif of the transformation from normal form to shadow from relatively soon. Would have to rig her first, ugh.

Been away from this for a week because Halo 5... I want to animate and play Halo 5 at the same time, but I can't! O.o

Not a whole lot of progress, since i've mostly been working on the story, but I do have a few minor tweaks for 217.

Working on shading and stuff, hopefully I can get the dress o be better shaded. She's also getting feet eventually, i'm sure. I may rig her before I start dark form, since I really just want to mess around with the model. Krieger is getting detailing done to him, since he's supposed to be muscly, but i'm bad at making textures. No pics yet because no clothes. Yet.

I'm thinking of trying to have The Dual done by... I have no idea. Christmas? I'm working on so many things, but the holidays are coming up which means more days off of work.
The first trailer for Project Broken/World is probably going to be a proof of concept trailer; just a generic trailer of the story, instead of focusing on one character. I'm still doing trailers for the main four, but this one will be first.

Thanks for looking!

HEY.
HEY GUYS.
GUESS WHAT.

SHE HAS FEET NOW.

Yeah, so this is the final model for Experiment 217 for season one, unless something changes. Probably won't.
She's ready to be rigged! When I learn to rig.
Sigh.

Did you change the lighting? It looks like she is in an overcast place, hence the grayishness.

The lighting has not been changed, though several things have:
The sky background is actually a sphere that was painted to look like a sky; I simply decreased the size, showing more of it.
The skin, dress, and hair are no longer just textures, but now textures that are affected by the light, hence some shading differences.
The hair has been changed from less of a blonde and more toward white, for *cough, cough* reasons.

All of that contributes to the currently grayish look.

Alright, so I have this project posted on three different forums, and i've gotten a few PM's asking some questions about the series, so i'll just answer the most common ones here:

1. How many seasons?
Four!
2. Prequal/Sequal?
That really depends on how good the original does. I have very vague ideas for both a prequel and a sequel, but I won't be making them if there isn't enough interest.
3. LGBT characters?
Yes, but not many.
4. Patreon/Kickstarter?
Not now. I'm not someone that likes to ask for money from people, especially since there is currently very little to show for it. MAYBE after the first trailer is out, but even then it's still in the air.
5. Youtube channel?
Not yet. When the first trailer comes out, it'll be on youtube, so keep an eye out for that.
6. Expected time for the first episode?
Honestly, i'm going to try to shoot for around next winter. I know that's a long time, but there is a LOT to do before that can happen. Voice actors, music, environment, more characters, rigging, learning good animation techniques, it all takes time, and I have very little of that.
7. DeviantArt?
Yes, actually. Here: http://graysilhouette.deviantart.com
8. Want help with modeling/rigging/animating/anything?
Yes, help would be pretty great. That being said, just leaving feedback is also very helpful.
9. How many episodes per season?
I'm not sure. Most anime have 12 episodes per season, but sometimes that's too short. Some seasons have more in them than others, so i'm not entirely sure how to divide everything up to be even.
10. Length of episodes?
Again, unsure. Just a five minute episode is already a lot of work, but barely any story can go into that. I want episodes that are 15 or so minutes long, but that's... a lot of frames o.o

Have any more questions? PM me on whatever forum you use to keep watch!

Thanks all!

Have I mentioned that I hate rigging?

Because, good god, do I hate rigging.

Everything is fine except for the shoulder and wrist areas. I've spent nearly three hours trying to fix just the shoulder alone, and clearly not succeeding.
UGH.
The shoulder deform would be FINE if it didn't decide to take HALF OF HER CHEST with it.
And the wrist, FFFFFFFF- It can't decide what bone it wants to move with, ends up making either the arm look fat or the wrist look tiny.

But it's ok, because all I have to do is fix those TWO spots, and everything will be fine.

I really hate rigging.

Also, side note. The mouth is actually no longer part of her face. What you see here is a quick shape I made up to resemble a mouth. I'm going to try to use the UV warp modifier to...
Alright, i'll simplify it. I'm going to make it so the mouth has different shapes (textures) for each sound/expression, and switch between the shapes each frame using movie magic to make it give the illusion of moving, like standard 2D cartoons and anime.

Also, to make the really 2D anime look, i'm disabling interpolation between frames. Those of you that don't know what that is, you probably don't need to know :P

Also, I hate rigging. So much.

It's set to mirror the weights on each side...
The shoulders are deforming differently...

SO HAVE I MENTIONED THAT I HATE RIGGING?

Hey guys! Sorry about the HUGE lack of updates! Unfortunately, my computer has basically died. Luckily, I got a phone with internet, so I can still have updates like this. I'm also close to having enough money for a REALLY GOOD laptop, so I should be able to get to work pretty soon.

Standby for further updates, big things to come.

Alright, time for an information dump. I'll be dividing this into a few sections: Story, Animation, Characters, and Other. There will be a TL;DR at the end.

STORY

The story is coming along well. Characters are being developed, the story is being told, and there are a few scenes that I already have nailed down. Season one is damn near done being written out, though without an official script yet, and the other three seasons are being worked on.
Is anyone here a writer? Because i'm feeling a struggle. I want my characters to be likable, relatable, or at least able to see their point of view. But I also need characters to, well, die. And that sucks. Putting so much effort into characters knowing that some of them have to die; it is a war after all. Main characters are NOT exempt from this either. And that sucks to do; kill off a character or several that you LIKE. But it NEEDS to happen, because plot. And i'm really struggling with the whole "don't bring dead characters back to life" thing, since it would not be hard to do in a magical type setting. But they CAN'T come back, or else death just isn't a threat anymore, and that's boring. Ugh.
Despite not ever have been in a relationship, I feel that I still have a DECENT idea of how the intricacies of one function, and I hope that shines through in the characters. Still, not sure if I'll land it completely.

ANIMATION
Modeling is going...well, I guess. Modeling in an anime style is difficult. A body mesh with no hair or clothes looks VERY alien, but you can't really mess with it too much until AFTER it has clothes and hair and other useful things in determining the look of a character. I can successfully model a single character in a day or two, depending on the complexity of their hair and clothes.
I hate rigging. Seriously. I have a basic skeleton down that I can use for my characters, but weight painting (after auto-paint) is still a huge pain. And there's always a curveball or two that it decides to throw at you.
Texturing hasn't happened because I suck at drawing. It would take the anime style to the next level if I could texture, but, y'know.
Animation hasn't happened solely because of rigging. My rigs are nowhere near as good as they need to be, but my patience with rigging is very thin.

CHARACTERS

Experiment 217
I'm not satisfied with her model anymore. Her age is tricky. She needs to be young, to show that even atrocities can happen to children, but also older so that she can be more mature when -redacted- happens. Right now she's hovering at 16 and underdeveloped, but her model looks too young. So, probably rebuilding her from the ground up.
Willow
Same boat as 217, not satisfied with the model anymore. Specifically, the face and hair. She also isn't rigged. So she gets a few changes soon.
Krieger
No finished model yet. I know what I want him to look like, I just need to start working on him. His blood beast transformation is probably getting entirely redone. I'm aiming for a dragon/dinosaur type of thing, but I don't feel that the current model reflects that.
Oliver
Yes, our other main male character finally has a name. Fairly set on what I want him to look like, except his outfit. Same as Krieger, just need to actually work on him.
Lady Scarlet
Now here we go. Someone who I actually worked on. Model is done, rig is done. Bam.

That hair was not fun to model.

OTHER

Got the new computer. Renders that used to take 47 seconds now take 12 (gottagofast). Officially reduced my sleep by two hours so I can work more on this project. Weekends are just project work. Food is optional. I sleep less, I eat less, I do less outside of it, but damn do I love doing this. Except rigging.
I gotta say, I've done so much research just because I was curious about some things. Types of swords, fighting stances, properties of metals and obsidian, various laws and properties of physics, string theory, conservation of mass, theoretical science; all of this is stuff that I never would have cared about in school. Dropping out of college isn't something that I like to tell people about, but it's actually renewed my thirst for knowledge. It's also allowed me to work more on this, gaining experience and knowledge about the program simply through using it so much. I stopped learning so that I could learn more.
So voice actors and composer(s). Voice actors is something i'm considerably less worried about, now that I realize how many of them are on youtube looking for opportunities. Just need to find the right ones for each character.

TL;DR
-Story
Goin' great.
-Animation
Goin'...not as great as I'd want.
-Characters
Not as satisfied as I want to be.
-Other
Voice actors shouldn't be too hard to find. New computer, much speed. Learning is cool. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH.

And that's all for tonight. Thank you, every one of you. And as always, thanks for looking.

Alright, so news. First off, Willow progress.

Changes that i'm going for so far are: updated cover palette from less blue/gray to more of a softer white/blue or maybe white/purple. Hair change. Adding feathers to her armor, and giving her more of a gentler feel and making her appearance more birdlike. I plan on giving her her a cape type thing, that she can extend to look like a set of wings and tail, giving the appearance of a Swallow in flight. Uncertain of her lower body; I'm thinking shorts and a see-though skirt, maybe. Not sure how that'll go.
Right now I plan on changing her current chest armor to look less like it's 100% feathers and make it look like feathers on a metal breastplate.

now the important stuff: I'm probably halting progress on Willow for a while. Stopping everyone, really. Why? Well, because I can't really call myself an animator. I haven't really... animated anything. The closest I've gotten is posing, and that's nowhere near the same thing. Sooo...
I'm gonna start working on Lady Scarlet's trailer video. I have a song that I can use (I know I can use it, I don't know if I can monetize the video. I'm asking the artist.), and a good idea of how I want the trailer to go.

So far I need to make background characters, MAYBE finish Krieger for it (emphasize MAYBE), make environments (like, three. And one is a snowy plain/forest area, so it shouldn't be a massive pain). I also need to learn how to animate artistically. Every motion, every scene needs to MEAN something. It needs to be nice to look at, but also to have meaning in everything. Positioning, colors, sound, all of it. It needs to make people think about the character, their actions, their intentions, their emotions, but without being obvious.
Yeah, that shouldn't be too hard.

Good lord, I'm doomed. Let's do it.

Thanks for looking!

Whew.

So today marks the one year point since starting this project as a little hobby back in college. Of course, I don't know if this is the EXACT date, but it's the date that I made my first render for it, one of Willow in her very early stages.

I like to think I've made a few leaps towards making everything look better and more 2D, heh heh.

But seriously, a year of this, and I've learned so much. And I'll continue to learn and grow, even when the show is released.
And of course, I have to thank all of you for supporting me. Thank you, it means a lot.

As for current progress, it's a step backwards, kinda. I'm going back and redoing my models. The topology on them was wrong and unnecessarily complicated, and with this type of shading, it HAS to be simple topology.
I'm also trying to look more into material nodes, since that seems to be a good solution to shading and highlights.

Here we have my new face on the left, and the old one on the right (of each picture).
From the start, we can see the shading works much better, and the topology is much better and more simple.

The issue here, however, is the faces ended up looking... pretty much the same, which isn't really what I want.
I don't know how to make my faces different, really. I change the eyes and the shape of the eyelashes, but they still look too similar.

An example is the most recent pictures of Scarlet and Willow; they're both using the same face with few differences, which bugs me a bit.

Another thing is that, no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to make a male face that doesn't look REALLY derpy. I'm going to keep working on it, of course.

Hair is also going to get MUCH simpler (remember Scarlet's hair? Yeah, way too complicated). Simpler shapes, smoother topology, better shading, better result.

This is the third time I've gone and redone my models, and I seem to get better results each time, so maybe after my fifth one in the future, I'll be satisfied :P

Thanks for looking!
