So responding to another suggestion got me thinking about one of my own, which is a rotation of featured game modes!
This is basically how it will work:

-We introduce several new game mode options. These are meant ENTIRELY to be crazy, sometimes random, and not meant in a competitive sense at all. I'll provide a list of some possible ones at the bottom of this post.
-One is selected and available for play by everyone at least level 10 or level 15 (may depend based on balancing issues) as the featured game mode
-The featured game mode rotates out with another one at the same time every week.
-Some game modes may return several times. Some may show up more than others. If some are more popular, they could show up more often.

Basically, it provides a fun, brand-new experience every week for players to mess around with and try to have fun in.

Here are some possible ones:
-Random Skills: Your stat distributions, equipped weapons, cores, and weapon stat mods all stay the same. However, your skill tree has completely random skills inserted in place of their old ones. For example, you could get overload when playing as BH instead of smokescreen. Skills can only replace other skills of the same tier. Additionally, the skill point distributions are also completely randomized among these random skill trees
-Random Weapon Damage: Every turn your gun, primary, and auxiliary weapons' damage values are randomized within set parameters based off of your level every turn. There are maximum and minimum values set as margins so that it doesn't become too ridiculous.
-0 Energy Costs: Your skills no longer cost energy. Have fun.
-Shorter Cooldowns: Everything has their cooldown reduced by 1, and their warmup reduced by 1 as well. Everybody gains bonus max health based off of their level.

Again, these game modes are not meant to be balanced in any way and are simply there to provide a new flavor of battle type for players to experiment and have fun with. There could be a leaderboard setting for these types of fights too.

As with Hearthstone, I think we can also learn from the success of their best tavern brawls and say to go extreme with this.
The craziest brawls have always been the best, as opposed to minor rule changes.
That being said, minor rule changes can be very interesting if they are esoteric. For example in hearthstone only being able to use Even minions and Odd spells or vice versa.

Another thing is this could be incorporated as part of a testing mode.
This battle mode would obviously have it's own separate leaderboards, but battling would still reward you with credits and exp. These two factors solve so many problems in regards to participation in testing, both in terms of numbers (some people feel like its a waste of time if they get nothing out of it) and in terms of what players are able to test in that time (players will already have high level character with their preferred gear).
When a new class or skill, you can just add it into this format with the standard ruleset and see how it goes. Balance accordingly and eventually add it to the main game.

Featured game modes is a great idea, I fully support this as well the specific modes you mention (even if they were off the cuff, they look like a lot of fun). Getting on board with that, how about a 'Random buff/debuff' mode where those type of skills activate without player prompts or a turn spent? You might get Shadow Arts, you might get malfunctioned.

I also like the added benefit to balance testing; seems like this would be a good way not only to add and test new features but to drop other things entirely that don't add to the game's experience. As it would not be permanent, there would not be as much complaint about a featured mode trying, say, no Rage and a different fix for that old tanking problem.

One thing though, would this detract from the pool of people entering regular modes? I'm assuming this would be a standalone selection beside the other three modes. Also I'm assuming that a non Flash client platform would be more robust in handling something like this, seems like it could get complicated in places?

I like the buff/debuff idea; it seems like it could be really fun.

It would probably pull some of the playerbase away from the regular game modes, but what I anticipate for a rotating game mode to function as is an added mode for players who get bored of the regular modes currently available and need a break from them for a bit, while also possibly serving to keep some players who'd normally leave because they'd be excited to try out something new every week.

These game modes don't have to be permanently available. They could be active for lets say 2 weeks out of a month, and then the rest of the time people are playing on the standard ladder or something like that.

Yes that's true, they could be offered during peak times or on some other regular rotation so as to minimize interference with the main modes.

It would also be advantageous to include the ability to send immediate feedback, even if its something as simple as a Like button. In post Flash ED, I have little doubt that a feedback system could even be much more elaborate than that.

Another mode: Legacy weapon fighting. You are temporarily equipped with old weapons that have original stat loadouts, negatives and all. This could actually, in an ironic twist, give Front45 the opportunity to rock some of the gear he would so desperately like to try. That is, people might randomly find themselves with an Alpha Blade or other cool Rare weapon every once in a while, just for that match.

Wartune has a version of this but they're basically minigames, they rotated weakly and you could win prizes and certain items that were beneficial. It worked quite well with the players. We could even allow the minigames to offer small amounts of varium so that eventually even regular players can save up for an item. It'll make them feel more loved so to speak. Supported
