Except in 1.4.0 you were forced to unlock every mutation anyway because to unlock the next tier you had to have everything of the lower tier.

That's wrong, you only had to unlock a certain number of mutations to move on to the next tier, not all of them. Which mean you can go from common mutation to epic mutations choosing the tree of mutations you want, making your escapes defined the way you want them to be, ofcourse with some RNG thrown in there, but at least you feel that you have control over what mutations you feel are more suitable for you.

I guess I'm just really lucky in BB. I got a nuke crate the day after the update, and a bunch of character specific passives from normal and reinforced crates.

@machaar must have been when they added more mutations they kept the cap the same because the base game required unlocking every mutation and for the tiers that were empty the needed amount was one more mutation than was in the game. But now you require precisely zero mutations from the previous tier to use the next if you are like dual thrusters then you get those late game upgrades much faster than in the previous builds.

In my two hour launch stream I had managed to unlock something from every tier except epic from warped in crates on a fresh save. How long would it have taken to reach the ultra tier on an older build? I'm not sure myself but I could test it fairly easily next time I'm off work

I'm not a big fan of luck, and even here on ED, you can see that the majority of players aren't fans of it or fans of RNG. I'm alright with a little bit of RNG/luck factors thrown in any game, I mean most successful ones are, from strategy games to FPS games to cards game like Hearthstone with the cards pack you buy, or sports game like Fifa/PES with the packs you buy, you might find different players with different scores. The only difference is when you buy a "crate" if we want to use the BB language in these games, in Fifa16 for example, you buy a gold pack or silver pack (Or other packs, sometimes seasonal packs or events packs contatining special items or players) means you will spend X currency for X amount of luck, the higher you pay, the better items you get.
With BB though, there are 2 luck factors, no matter what mode you play, insane or easy (difference in effort), you will end up getting the same 10 batteries, who will most probably unlock steel or reinforced crates, then in these crates, there is another luck factor that decides the mutations you get.

I've already talked about this here and suggested some stuff. The only thing I forgot to mention is batteries, and how is it weird you get 10 batteries from escaping in easy mode, and 10 batteries from escaping insane mode. Let's say that's an engine limitation, at least batteries won through insane mode waves should give a better chance to find better crates and unlock better mutations.
