Roaming the Web

quote:

Thousands of images promoting goods sold on Amazon and other shopping sites have been removed after a photo-sharing service changed its terms.
Ebay and Etsy have also been affected, in addition to many forums and blogs.
The problem has been caused by Photobucket introducing a charge for allowing images hosted on its platform to be embedded into third-party sites.
The company caught many of its members unaware with the change, prompting some to accuse it of holding them to ransom.
Denver-based Photobucket is now seeking a $399 (£309) annual fee from those who wish to continue using it for "third-party hosting" and is facing a social media backlash as a consequence.
The BBC received an automated response when it tried to contact the company and is still seeking comment.

This has to be one of the dumbest business decisions in the history of the internet. It's like if YouTube suddenly required YouTube Red to watch any embedded videos, but way worse because it breaks images in the ugliest way possible. I've seen a bunch of signatures on this forum and others just straight up broken because of this policy switch. Obviously it's the beginning of the end for Photobucket, so I guess the silver lining is that now consumers will know to leave their service, but I almost would have rather Photobucket just died rather than having them hold all our images for ransom in a desperate last ditch effort to make a quick buck.

I recommend that anyone who has a Photobucket account download their pictures and migrate any images that they use to another hosting service like imgur.

RIP Photobucket account, 2007-2017.

i mentioned this on the sig testing thread, i caught onto it fairly swiftly due to my sig changing on me.
well, i've been reluctant to go onto photobucket long before this due to the adblocker blocker and the fact that the site(which was already laggy before) gets extremely laggy with ads.
anyway you slice it though, photobuckets basically committing suicide with this stupid & obviously greedy change.
you don't go putting up a paywall on the only thing thats keeping people using your services. its time for the great migration to other, better sites like imgur.

That a bummer. I never used Photobucket, but I know it was the image hosting site of a choice for a lot of users here on the forums. I used Imageshack and then Tinypic back in the day. rip rip >_>

Please don't screw up, Imgur, we're counting on you. ;-;

i guess i better start pulling all the images off photobucket
been putting it off.
can't even just drag & drop to imgur as doing so gets that crappy no 3ed party error

edit: good news, just got adblocker to work on photo bucket
just ad this to the filter list:
spoiler:

photobucket.com#@#div:last-child > div:first-child > div:first-child + div[class]:last-child

That explains why I don't see a lot of photos in many people's signatures...

I can give a bit of a more neutral response to this seeing as I no longer really have the need for use of photobucket as I don't come on here much (which my signature is on). It's the internet, eventually (and more than likely soon) people are going to find a work around to reclaim their images and they will redistribute them to another image site. I can understand the communities of other forums aggravation at the immediate action taken by photobucket but that is photobucket's decision as a business. Either photobucket may make a withdrawl on their decision to bill people utilising photos for third party usage (which i find unlikely) or people will find some other way.

I do wanna say that the 399$ cost is really atonishingg, though i don't use photobucket so I have no idea to the reason for the cost and don't intend to look intonit.

I never got around to using Photobucket, but I always heard bad things :( What about Flickr? Google Photos? Picasa? This is where I found some info about those alternatives I just listed. Read about the positives and negatives first.... I'm sure there's something better than Photobucket there ;)

I've been using GoDaddy to host my "website" for the past 10+ years… and since no one really visits but myself, I pay less than a third of what Photobucket appears to be asking. Currently I'm at 150 GB space limit with the ability to upload any file, plus PHP and MySQL support; at the very least it's allowed me to learn more dynamic website design, such as building my own forum.

…I don't mean to sound like a shill for 'em, but what Photobucket seems to be doing sounds almost like extortion.

I agree!! Photobucket is the worst nowadays. The pics on some forums look so ugly now. No warning, no nothing! I am deleting my Photobucket account now!!

*edit*

I found a great alternative to Photobucket for hosting photos and also, other files. If you need a website and photo host at the same time, I suggest the hPage website builder. I needed to create a website anyway for my photography portfolio and I couldn't afford a website developer or website designer (since they are quite pricey plus maintenance) so I just decided to settle for a website creator which is very affordable. Good thing hPage has a large storage space (5 GB). I only pay 4.99 euros a month via Paypal and I am able to manage all the webpages my self.

You can check em out here: https://www.hpage.com
