Soft, brightly lit clouds surrounded the floating platforms of this arena, coyly hiding just how high the competitors now stood. The air was pleasantly cool, a soft breeze causing gentle movement among the surrounding atmosphere. A faint, golden glow from the floor cast a dreamy haze over the scene, but harsh reality still remained.

Despite its beauty, the rising sun brought with it a red Dawn, foretelling the bloodshed to come.

Let the battle between Michel Ferguson and Myrr begin!

Since when could light appear so gentle…

It had been nearly a century since sunshine had caressed her cheeks so tenderly, leaving warmth without hint of a burn on her fair skin. Any time before, it had screamed at her. Driving her back into the shadows and the caverns. But this was like the touch of a lover. Almost… welcoming. Calming. Home-

No.

She could risk no distractions now, nothing that could turn her from the path that lay ahead. Home would come later. First justice, second revenge. Then, and only then, would she regain the home taken from her.

Myrr stepped through the light, the clouds parting before her to reveal its source - a golden glow emulating from three floating platforms ahead. Black eyes passed coldly over their beauty as she stepped onto the nearest one. All light eventually fell prey to darkness, and the unblemished stones before her would soon be stained crimson. Her fingers curled around the iron of her staff.

The first test…

A test of her skills, and of her new magic. A test of her resolve. Her lips curled in an unpleasant smile. Her first kill had gained her extraordinary power. Perhaps this would be the one to set her free.

"Give me your name, human. For I shall be the last one to hear it."

He looked away from the gate, bored from a day's worth of papers and diplomacy. Michel groomed his mustache hurriedly, to start off the fight with a proper gentlemanly appearance. There was also the matter that if he won in perfect condition, it should ruin his opponent's self-esteem. The breeze lifted the tail of his coat. As he marched forward, the tip of his sword, almost concealed in his cane, clicked against the platform. He narrowed his eyes, deciphering who he must face. He shrugged, mildly unimpressed at the moment. His boots clacked against the stone as he neared the edge of the platform.

His opponent, cloaked in black, called out to him for his name. "Give me your name, human. For I shall be the last one to hear it." Michel twisted his neck, where he pushed his left palm against it, bone cracking a bit. Confidence was a boring trait to start out with.

"Ahh, yes. My name is uh, John Dee. Pleased to meet your acquaintance. Do you know the directions to your heart by chance?" He calmly walked along the rim of the platform, getting closer to the split. He lifted his Book of Astronomy from his waste, leaving it unopened for the time.

If he must, he shall make the battle quick. Afterall, an opponent's crushed hopes shall always be amusing, no matter the circumstance.

Myrr’s smile became even more unpleasant.

Fool. If you’re going to lie, at least make it sound believable.

Her eyes passed over her opponent, from the cane clicking against the platforms, to the magic glinting from the tomes at his waist. She had to admit he was quite the smartly dressed fellow, if not unsuitably dressed for combat.

Doesn’t look strong enough to even throw a punch. Must be a mage… likely ranged. And I don’t like the look of that book in his hand.

Her boots thumped softly as she kept pace to his stride, moving to keep him directly opposite from her. A pity the center ground was lower, though that could provide some options for later. For now, she wanted to test her opponent’s patience. A hard won trait on her part, but one that now served her well. How long would he exchange barbs before throwing the first strike?

“I’m afraid that my heart has no path for the likes of you, Mr….Dee,” she replied, voice hinting at scorn as his name left her lips. “I am called the Death Rose. And unless you are hiding more than a magic library under that cloak of yours, I am sure that my blade shall find yours.”

Michel made a couple last observations, before he was about to proceed with his plans. This robed woman seemed to keep her distance from afar. While obviously she was tuned to the art of magic, many would not be so extremely hesitant to get close. Afterall, illusionist like himself are forced to defeat an opponent up close. No, she must be extremely weak physically. If he could force her to take heed in the center, then he truly would have the advantage.

As he did his casual stride, the figure replied once more, emitting scorn from his name. When she called her title, he found it difficult to stifle a laugh. "Ahh, you can't take condolence at my stupidity? I mean, I have the most wretched of names. Yours, Death Rose, at least suits you." Venomous sarcasm dripped from his lips slightly. However, it soon faded into something far more disgruntled. "I pity you, to be honest. You probably are extremely confident. Yet, you inadvertently announced you have a blade. If you want to craft a story from this battle..." His gaze never left the "Death Rose", even as he neared the split. "I would advise to show what you can do, instead say."

He grasped his book tightly, as light began to warp around him, as his body faded from view. It wasn't a perfect invisibility spell. Afterall, he still blinked back into view but with slight lost of visual confirmation is what matters when attempting to throw any kind of attack. He then sprinted out of his stride, turning his trajectory sharply as he leapt over the split. His book then fell to his waist as he grabbed his Book of Divination as he began to rush his opponent.

Was the man blind as well as a fool..?

Her knife may not be a hulking broadsword, but the glinting hilt was hardly camouflaged against the black of her robes. But it was enough for her to lose all interest in engaging the wits, or lack thereof, of her opponent.

The humans say that actions speak louder than words. They have that much correct, I suppose. But little else...

Myrr’s train of thoughts broke off as the magic sparked along on of Dee’s books. A spell of some sort. Even as they each neared the gap between their respective platforms, his scrawny body suddenly blinked out of sight. He came back into focus as he leapt into empty space, the black tails of his coat fluttering behind him like ravens, before he phased out of sight again.

Invisibility… but imperfect. I hardly need full sight to damage you. Twice again, the fool.

She spun her staff about in a quick circle, mouth moving as it almost-silently formed the words of a long-forgotten language. She made a quick, upwards gesture with her free hand before turning to jump the the split herself, landing lightly and quickly traveling across the stones before throwing a glance behind. Two of the runes glowing across the bottom of her staff faded as the set of spears, black as iron and burning as if they had just been removed from a forge, erupted from the ground to form a wall before the charging human, close knit so as to halt him in his tracks and cut off his easy path.

It would be simpler if he were to just charge in and fry himself. But I supposed the air would stink if so.

As her prey’s sprint brought him towards where her spears now extended, Myrr rested a hand, almost casually, on her own tome. If he insisted on playing with the light, perhaps it was almost time to bring out the shadows...

The wind rushed past him as he sprinted closer to his target. His vision began to focus as he got near, where he could see the figure slightly better. The Death Rose stood in position, as she spun her staff, perhaps performing some sort of magical ritual. As she raised her hand, she leapt over the gap herself. Michel chuckled to himself for a tad, for retreating will only suffice for a time.

Then suddenly, black spears charged out of the ground... forming a mere wall that he can easily pass through. Who knew his lanky nature would serve him well? Unimpressive indeed. It seems his opponent was truly affected by his partial invisibility. As he neared the wall, his momentum reverted as he practically twirled between two of the spears. The tails of his coat nick against the spear where they singe, as he took a quick bow. Almost immediately, he rushed towards the edge of the platform. Right before he neared the other gap, he spun his cane so the end pointed away from him as he raised his Book of Divination, channeling magic into it. Sparks of energy burst out as starry-form of darkness formed around Michel's hand.

Born anew, his hand held a basket-hilted rapier, coursing with magic. Stars moved rapidly along the surface, as it glows slightly. He slowed his pace slightly, in order to prepare what the "Death" Rose has to offer.

Ah, nothing in life is ever simple, even for one as long as mine. A pity.

The human had dodged neatly through the spears, smoke trailing from the tails of his overlong coat. She continued moving a pace with her prey, keeping herself relatively spaced apart. She couldn’t keep this pace for much longer, though.

Curse my people for betraying me, I can barely sustain myself in this dratted thin air.

She needed some breathing room. Altering her forward movement to bring her closer to the inner edge of the platform, she traced her long, pale fingers along the spine of her book, murmuring softly under her breath. Darkness, bleeding into the pale light of the dawn, spiraled out from her fingers, growing until it formed a globe around her as she came to a stop on the edge of the platform. The edges of it spilled over onto the central platform. As the spell finalized, it stilled, darkness swirling about the point of its formation as she took a few steps further along the platform away from the charging human.

If nothing else, let’s see if he’s still foolish enough to attack the shadows themselves.

Michel dove over the gap as he drew closer, especially when his target retreated once again. He clasped his head and rolled forward, before he made a dead stop with one knee on the ground. His brow sunk in, as she obviously not well-suited for the arena. As a spy, this looked questionable. Why would one want to fight in the arena when it doesn't seem they have much to gain? At the very least he can gather information by winning matches.

Before he could ponder a reason any longer however, the Death Rose hovered her hand over a tome. She edged closer to the inner area of the platform, until darkness grew and grew out of the tome, eclipsing the Death Rose in pure utter darkness. "What a meaningless trick," Michel scoffed. Such obvious intent he thought, attempting to blind him so he could casually fall to his doom. A dual-choice, normally a tactician's more devious move, where the enemy must sacrifice something in order to get out safely. Rapidly, his Book of Navigation began to activate their powers, as the Death Rose and the eclipsed platform were shown in wispy white light to his eyes.

As he approached, he made a casual stride as his invisibility began to dissipate, growing somewhat bored of this chase. A race track, this platform is not. When he entered the globe of darkness, he flicked his sparking rapier in different directions before lunging forward with a burst of speed and precision, in before making a thrust at the Death Rose and then swiftly curving his sword in a circular trajectory swinging upleft diagonally.

His tomes. Another unpleasant surprise.

Myrr scowled as the human, his flickering figure slowly coming into steady focus once more, strode towards her directly through her shadows. The magical glow activating around one of his books revealed the source - no mortal could naturally see her without relying on magical help.

What would it take, I wonder, to separate you from your books, little human?

A metallic glint caught her attention - he had discarded any pretense of subtlety and was preparing to jab at her with his toothpick of a weapon. Myrr spun her staff around in her hands, knocking his blade to the side. A frown creased her brows slightly - he was strong for a human. She had better not stay at close range for long. Another quick,if inelegant, deflect, a quicker murmur, and Myrr released her staff with one hand to throw the gathering shadow bolt at her opponent - point blank. Unless he was hiding armor beneath that ridiculous coat of his, his soon-to-form bruises would be as black as her attack.

You may be able to see, human. But the darkness is MY terrain.

With a thrust and slice, his sword was forcefully knocked away by the unexpected strength of this woman. Before Michel can completely regain his composure, the Death Rose motioned her hand at time, in a spell-like manner. He spun to the side as a bolt crackled out of her hand, made out of dark energy. Casting a ranged spell at point blank was certainly unexpected. As Michel quickly gathered though, the way she grasped her staff, it seems it was the source of her magic. Right now, he can't grab another tome in order to perform a different spell.

He snorted a bit, and cracked his neck to the side. Swiftly, he aimed his rapier at the Death Rose's hand, as he then made a grab for the staff in the same motion. At the same time, Michel went to deliver a small kick at her ankle, hoping to throw her off even more. This game shall not continue any more than it should She better throw out quite a spectacular move in order to get out of this situation. Michel has everything in his disposal for a close encounter, whereas her actions says she doesn't. The stars and the dark void between them guided his path, where he still did not show all he can muster.

An clean dodge, and a quick response. This human is well practiced.

With her shroud dissipating as her mana shifted elsewhere, Myrr found herself, for the first time in nearly a century, at a disadvantage. Abandoning all attempts to remain regal, Myrr inelegantly twisted away from the blows he now rained down upon her, and lept over the gap at her side to the central platform. She saw his hand reach out from the corner of her eye, but quick as he was, she was Elven, she was faster. Yet not swift enough to escape her opponent entirely, as the tip of his boot caught her ankle just as her own feet left solid ground, throwing her leap off balance. Not enough to miss her destination, but enough so that her feet slipped from under her as she hit, rolled, and came up on her knees to glare above her at the human.

You have NO right to bring me down, mortal. I will have my revenge for that.

Ancient, twisted words fell from her lips as she slammed the base of her staff into the platform, a pool of blackness spreading outwards from her even as a full set of ten runes flashed and faded. The tendrils of her nightmarish creation would likely be too short to grab him from the upper platform until it had fully grown, and even then only if he was very foolish, but it would keep him away lest he fall prey to a worse fate than the fall below.

What would it take to finally bring this woman down to her knees, and actually submit? A passing thought, as he gave chase as the Death Rose leapt down to the lower platform. She can't afford any chance to stay in a close encounter; why should he allow it? Once more, he flicked his sparking rapier, as this time he went for a debilitating blow. That is, if an unexpected surprise didn't finally rear its ugly head towards him. Once his boot slammed down on the stone gold platform, the floor grew black, with tendrils grabbing him around the leg, forcing him to stay in the pool. He quickly grabbed his Book of Astronomy to return the favor with tendrils of his own... until his vision isntead shown something far worse.

Golden light and clouds suddenly surrounded him, normally a safe haven for the purest of hearts. Yet, he was not pure of heart. A blue-skinned man appeared before him, spear standing center. Feathered black wings of death enveloped him, as a dusty brown robe hanged loosely form his waist. Words, heard in Michel's own mind, were transplanted, those of harsh accordance to the laws of divination. "Price is to be made for those who dare steal from the very messengers of the gods themselves. Michel, punishment is now." What is the meaning of this? Surely he done no wrong! And... why was he in here to begin with? He was in the arena beforehand, why was a simply pool of black able to just send him here? As the messenger raised and pointed his spear downwards to perform the execution, Michel snorted, and said outloud. "You think mere illusions can keep me in place? Folly. Death Rose, I have something far worse... something that would cripple you instead."

As everything came back to normal and slowly lifted himself up from apparently being sunk momentarily, he raised his tome, as darkness began to surround him instead. To others, he seem to turn into something else. Something far more monstrous than normally allowed. A black dragon of twilight burst into the scene, roaring, gaze piercing directly into the so called Death Rose. Yet to Michel, it was just yet another trick. Now it is time to see if his opponent can see through the trick... or suffer a fate well-suited to her, thinking she is almighty but instead a fool who thinks they know anything of planning and combat. Come Death Rose, will your final moments be now?
