Ranloth -> Writing Contest (8/7/2014 15:24:10)

For those who don't know yet (or don't follow Twitter closely), I'm the new Guest Writer! Since I also post (a lot) on Forums, it means I can stay up-to-date easily and get the community involved more. :D

"Our goal is to empower our most creative players to help us create content, drive the storyline, and maintain balance. EpicDuel’s future will be in the player’s hands." -Titan

Guest Artists are already high in numbers, and the Writers will also expand over time. Soon, there will also be Balancers - once the balance tool has been completed and fully tested. Right now, I'm personally interested in writing and to get players involved more - and there's no denying that those who stand out due to their skill, whether it's art, writing or balance, may be picked to join the Guest Team. So there it is, the Writing Contest idea!
It is possible to hold such contest in the near future, but there also has to be enough interest in it, in order to go ahead with the idea - considering it will be an official contest, not a Forum-only one.

What it would involve is writing your own mission chain, ideally around the length of recent mission chains (divided into parts), so around 8-10 missions would be best. It would also have to follow the official EpicDuel Storyline, so you would not be able to create your own NPC, or change an existing one entirely. You would be free to use them in a reasonable way - no killing off NPCs that are part of the game, or something really silly.
What's in there for the players? As I've already mentioned, it gives the Guest Team an idea into who has the skills for it, not necessarily writing only, and may be picked to join the Guest Team in the future - it's always good to have something to back up your skills, whether it's the art you've made, or pieces of writing. We could also design an "Epic Writer" achievement, which would be exclusive to the winner(s)*, as well as getting your mission chain in-game**, and perhaps working with the Guest Artists to design your own unique item that would be given to your character only***. I do not know whether there would be any Varium rewards, since I don't decide on this kind of stuff.

There could be an option to submit your entries via Twitter, just like some contests used to in AQW. This would allow more players to participate, who may not want to sign up to the Forums, or simply cannot post - i.e. banned. All it would take is uploading your story on a hosting site, such as TwitLonger or Pastebin, linking it to the Guest Writers and/or Devs + include the hashtag, and then wait for the results.

Would you guys be interested in something like this? It is a serious idea, and would give you a chance to get something in-game + possibly more! Or perhaps there are other ways of doing the contest - and if so, feedback is appreciated. :)

Remember, this is just an idea - NOT a confirmation that a Writing Contest will be held!

* Most likely the Top 3
** You would work closely with the Guest Writers too, in order for the story to fit into the game - even if it means tweaking your own story
*** Could be upgraded up until the level cap, just like promos

Remorse -> RE: Writing Contest (8/7/2014 15:32:14)

I have always been interested in making a mission for this game and adding to the stroyline,

If such competition were to happen I would give it a crack :)

Bounty Hound -> RE: Writing Contest (8/7/2014 20:14:50)

Sounds like a lot of fun.[:)]
I would want to try it, and I know a lot of other people would too.

Pemberton -> RE: Writing Contest (8/9/2014 1:39:59)

Imo game should focus on cut scenes for storyline and mission. Nobody really reads the long write ups honestly.

Silver Sky Magician -> RE: Writing Contest (8/9/2014 8:16:53)

Nice, Trans! Good job with your first quest this week. Engaging the player base more does seem to be a promising way to make up for manpower shortages, and it's exciting to see where EpicDuel will head from now on. Too bad I'll only be able to contribute next year - big E's around the corner o.0

TRizZzCENTRINO -> RE: Writing Contest (8/9/2014 8:36:05)

@pemberton as would everyone else, however cutscenes take up much of the database space while those space could easily be used for something else that is more useful.

One Winged Angel1357 -> RE: Writing Contest (8/9/2014 8:37:45)

Cut scenes are pretty big on memory and most of these missions really unimportant so it would be pointless to have a cut scene

ND Mallet -> RE: Writing Contest (8/9/2014 11:09:00)

A shame we can't make a new NPC. Would have enjoyed a mission chain discovering the past of the Bio Hazards that was based off my ED story. Or writing about the dreaded FrankeNPC(or Achievmo as NW dubbed him) and how Ulysses built him from scraps and trophies of Delta V's greatest warriors(boss NPCs). Maybe I could just write a mission chain for Ulysses where we help him gather supplies from around the planet and gather battle information for him so he can work on a "project" that he feels would redeem himself for what he did in the past with the Infernal Androids

lionblades -> RE: Writing Contest (8/9/2014 19:48:55)

This sounds like fun. I am interested and might participate, but I have a ton of schoolwork atm.

Ranloth -> RE: Writing Contest (8/9/2014 19:59:02)

If all goes well, the contest would be held probably next month. Plenty of work until then (TLaPD will eat a fair amount of time) and setting it all up with the Devs and Forum Staff will take a bit too. ^^
