Very few boards will actually purge threads (General Discussions and Q&As, mostly). Not deleting old posts could potentially create unnecessary load on the forums servers. That being said, if a thread is deleted, it's likely there was no discussion on it for a long time - making it against the rules to re-post on it anyway (necroposting/bumping a thread after 3 days of no activity is not allowed). An ArchKnight also mentioned in this post that you can use websites like the Wayback Machine if you really need access to a deleted post. If anything, it serves the same function as the forum search, but on a different website.
