Kiyone -> =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/24/2018 17:29:29)

http://www.artix.com/posts/os-tournament/

Hello everyone! It’s your favorite doggo here, Asuka! Recently we mentioned Oversoul and a lot of you seemed to be trying your best to get it up and running again. We appreciate your valiant attempts and decided to do something for you while you play, level and explore!

We are running an Oversoul Tournament for how much love and care you have been giving Oversoul from everyone in the community! We saw one generous player’s tournament D a w n and were inspired to do our very own as well! We are unleashing our latest tournament! There are very specific rules so be sure to listen closely if you’re interested in entering.

There will be two groups of around 32 each
What this means is there will be limited entry because of size and sheer numbers of possible entrants, but worry not! If this one is successful, we may do more in the coming future!

There may be a ban list of specific characters!
While we would love for you to use your fancy and awesome characters, we do know some are just..Really, really unfair to battle against most of the time. Custom decks may save one or two but we realize not everyone has this option. There will be a list available on my Twitter at @AsukaAE after this design notes has been posted and before the tournament heads under way. Worry not though! We will try to be as lenient as possible!

We will set the time and date of your match for you
This one will be tough but regarding to this please follow the criteria when entering for it. Make sure to pay attention to my Twitter at @AsukaAE to see your matchups of the day. You will have up to 24 hours to complete your duel. If you do not reach this requirement, you will be forfeited and your opponent will advance to the next round so please do your absolute best to pay attention!

We are going by the honor system
Since we cannot spectate actual matches, we will take screenshots of deciding duels. Please do not alter any images. If we find you to try and cheat or be dishonorable, we may disqualify you from current and future competitions at our discretion.

Please be sure to send me the screenshots of the duel at the end. You can each send one, or you may decide between yourselves before the duel begins who will send it.

Okay I read all the rules. Now, how can I enter?
To enter, you will need to tweet to on Twitter with the following the criteria that will be needed at @AsukaAE with the following. Selection will be from both Twitter and the forums so please do enter. It will be a very first come, first serve kind of situation

Please follow this criteria when entering. It will allow me to help set up matches the best way I can. Failure to do so will be an unqualified entry.

Oversoul Name in Game:

Timezone:

Rank Tier and Level(s) of intended character(s) you will use:

Twitter or Forums name for contacting you (optional):
(This is in case you need a reminder on your match. Otherwise, a no show will result in a disqualification)

Will there be more tournaments or other things similar to this?
If this goes all according to plan with a positive reaction and willingness to enter then this will very much so continue to happen! We love and appreciate all your efforts and hate for them to go to waste.

Bionic Bear -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/24/2018 21:04:55)

Before immediately entering, I have to ask - are there banned cards? Characters I can understand, but it would be unfortunate if people with the means stack 5 iron hides, for example.

the warden -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/24/2018 21:34:38)

I dont know what rank tiers mine would be, but ill be using my void champion:) and he is level 20
Time zone is GMT
ingame name: The warden
How many characters can we use?

I have classes starting September fourth and an orientation to goto for the program on the 30th this month.

The Jop -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/24/2018 23:28:09)

I appreciate the effort, but why is this Twitter-based? Why not just use these forums like we normally do for tournaments?

Dr Disrespect -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/25/2018 1:37:49)

Twitter has a much larger reach compared to the forums.

Kiyone -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/26/2018 19:45:00)

@The Jop
Asuka is running the tournament with me being helper/advisor position. It was Asuka choice the main communications go through twitter for this one. Depending on how it goes. Will determine how future communication for tournaments go.

@Bionic Bear
Their are no banned cards for this tournament to my knowledge.

@The Warden
I'm not sure if their is limit or your fix on one character for this one. Given the instruction i would assume no. Asuka would know more.

The Finnish Phoenix -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/27/2018 15:34:04)

I'm very happy that we're having an official OverSoul tournament that uses the forums, the Design Notes, Artix.com, Twitter and Discord to promote it. It will be the third tournament announced this summer after Dawn's and DragonNation's, and this one should be the biggest and furthest-reaching due to additional promotion. All are great signs for the game.

That said, as someone who has spent as much time as I have playing OverSoul and observing how various characters compare to one another, the list of banned characters doesn't make sense as a means of preventing the involvement of characters that are "Really, really unfair to battle against most of the time." when certain characters listed as banned are significantly easier to battle against than certain others that aren't listed. 6/11 characters banned have identifiable counterparts that are blatantly as good or better than they are but are not banned. Namely: Fiend of Vergill Boss, PumpkinLord, Witchblade Boss, Earth Elemental, Ancient Shogun, and Nulgath's Shadow.

Fiend of Vergill Boss and WitchBlade Boss I can only assume were banned on the premise of their original decks which included boss cards including what would now be 500 for 1 energy, 800 for 2 energy, Corruption for 6 energy and a variant of Death Flow dealing 2000 damage for 8 energy. They only had these cards for 3 days for a period of February 1st-4th, 2013 before having their decks significantly diluted to the point of being very substandard Neutral characters. Their only selling point now is their one copy of Corruption each, and as far as Neutral characters with Corruption go both Clan King and Thok are identifiably much better characters than Fiend of Vergill Boss and Witchblade Boss. Perhaps Asuka has the characters with their original decks since he is a Tester and forgot they were nerfed, that's what I can only assume happened. As they are, most other Neutral Masters and all Neutral Legends are considerably better than Fiend of Vergill Boss and Witchblade Boss.

PumpkinLord isn't a bad Neutral character and comes with 2 Iron Hides, but around the time Neutral Custom Cards were released we got Taro, which initially had the exact same deck as PumpkinLord. This was a placeholder deck that would be upgraded by Sage by replacing two Power Strikes with Neutralize and Death Flow, and indeed it was an upgrade as Taro would become a significantly better character than PumpkinLord. As someone who worked closely as a Tester alongside Sage and was active and posted here at the time Neutral Custom Cards and Taro was released, this is a part of history that I'd expect Asuka to be aware of. While PumpkinLord has two Iron Hides, any character with two Iron Hides and Neutralize (including Taro, Monk, Dire Monk, and Clan King) are much better characters that are much harder and indeed more unfair (especially with full access to custom cards) to play against.

If memory serves, Asuka designed the deck for Tyrant Moose - a character dedicated to the forum ArchKnight here ND Mallet as Astor was dedicated to Beck. To call Earth Elemental a better character than Tyrant Moose would be a tough sell if ever there was one. Tyrant Moose has 2 copies each of Petrify and Earthquake compared to Earth Elemental's 1 of each while keeping the same 1 Stonewall, 2 Defends, and 1 Mountain Strike. Yet, Earth Elemental is banned and Tyrant Moose is not. Other characters with 2 Petrifies including Rev, Earth Ram, and both Tauruses also consistently outperform Earth Elemental, as do both Minotaurs which have Mountain Strike and Petrify while having 13 card decks that enable them to draw desired custom cards more often. That would make for 7 Earth characters better than Earth Elemental that Earth Elemental was banned ahead of.

Ancient Shogun is perhaps the most baffling character on the list. If it's not the worst Legendary character in the game then it competes hard for the dubious accolade with Father Time and Ogre Mage. It can be used as a combo attacker at lower levels, but not nearly as well as the Veteran Void Incarnates. At higher levels, it can't keep up with the ticks of Poison employed by any number of better Shadow characters.

Nulgath's Shadow, while being considerably more powerful than Ancient Shogun has very close counterparts in Grimlord and Void Archmage. In Void Archmage's case it's within a card, with Nulgath's Shadow's Shadow Fire being replaced with Void Archmage's Poison, a change that makes me quick to favor Void Archmage for a bout at high levels where Poison more often than not outpaces Shadow Fire in terms of damage per energy. Grimlord has a three card difference, upgrading Nulgath's Shadow's two 200s to 500s and swapping one of its Void Reflections for a Life Drain. I don't see how a case could be made that Nulgath's Shadow is better than the other two to the point that it has to be banned and the others don't.

As for the mighty Black Dragon, it's a character that I wouldn't kick up a fuss over being banned and it does seem particularly powerful at first glance with its augmented attack cards. That said, Asuka participated in our forums' Shadow tournament that I won with Poison Drake in a final against Beck who also used Poison Drake, both of us beating Black Dragons along the way there. We both also had the option of using Level 20 Black Dragons of our own, but we opted for Poison Drake instead because its access to Iron Hide made it especially good in an environment against Poisons and Marks of Death. Since then, characters like Skexis Brood, Bandit Drakath, and Cyber Void have been released which consistently outperform the banned Shadow characters including Black Dragon, at least at high levels since they get more energy to work with from cards like Neutralize, Chaotic Flux and Energize respectively.

That's pretty much it in terms of my thoughts regarding the characters banned. I do think that Iron Hide as a Custom Card will cause for a particularly unpleasant and unfair tournament for anyone that should run into a Neutral character sporting 4-5 custom Iron Hides to slowly grind them to death. I think that as the tournament's laid out it'll almost certainly be won that way, which is unfortunate. I can only hope that Asuka might be convinced to make some changes in these regards before the tournament begins.

clintonian -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/27/2018 16:10:16)

There definitely needs to be a limit on cc cards. No one likes double iron hides each turn lol. Actually i wouldnt mind limiting iron cc alone

Gorillo Titan -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/27/2018 17:46:57)

Drakel with super charge is amazing

Kiyone -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/27/2018 23:12:26)

On the ban character list. I know Asuka wanted to keep this as open as much as they can on characters since this tourney had no specific theme. On why this character and not that character was ban. Asuka had final say on that and I assume a lot of choices were due to being a tester for OS.

On no CC bans or limit. This again was Asuka call. While I can understand the need for certain cards. I believe this fell into keep the tournament flowing easier for all involved. While forum based tournament never had an issue of player trying to cheat with CC.(You guys are all awesome in that regard!) We are asking players from different social areas. So I assume its to avoid someone falsely making cheating claims or to avoid people miscounting on CC in a deck.

Now if you feel theirs needs to be changes to the tourney before it starts. Contact Asuka and let them know before tourney official starts in case changes can be made before we get to some good old fashion fighting.

The Finnish Phoenix -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/28/2018 18:18:24)

The problem is that Asuka banned several lesser characters while leaving alone several characters that are clearly and significantly stronger than those he banned.

Banning Fiend of Vergill Boss, WitchBlade Boss, and Pumpkinlord but not Clan King, Taro, Thok, Monk, or Dire Monk is indefensible.
Banning Earth Elemental but not Tyrant Moose is indefensible.
The implication that Ancient Shogun is any more "unfair to battle against" than a Clan King with full access to custom cards would be laughable if not for the grim fact that Asuka is and insists that he should remain the sole person responsible for both official tournaments and designing decks for future characters.

These decisions are not justified by Asuka being a Tester, they're evidence that we need better Testers with a genuine say regarding important decisions like tournaments and decks if this game is to have any sort of sustainable future.

I'm not surprised that he wasn't the one to post this thread and that you Kiyone are posting in his stead. I have tried to contact Asuka directly in the past and was not dignified with a response. It doesn't matter how many tournaments you win, it doesn't matter how many hundreds of hours you commit to this game, Asuka will always know best despite barely having thought about this game since the early days of 2013 when Fiend of Vergill Boss and WitchBlade Boss were actually unfair to play against before being nerfed into competitive obsolescence on February 4th, 2013.

I'd nominate any one who posted in this thread as a Tester, I'm confident that every one of you are every bit as qualified to be entrusted with the game's future as Asuka.

atreue -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/29/2018 18:22:03)

I agree with dylligraphy on this one. The characters he's listed on the ban list are sub par compared to better characters as dylligraphy has listed as well. The black dragon and nulgath's Shadow bans are understandable but the rest of the ban list needs re-worked. And a limit on cards like iron hide and corruption needs to be made. No one will enter knowing that they will have to constantly deal with iron hide spam. Asuka needs to listen to the players and their feedback. Asuka isn't a bad person but he needs to listen to others and not just his fellow team mates but players as well and hear them out. I would enter but there is a few things preventing me from joining.

the warden -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/29/2018 22:00:36)

Think ill pass on this actually, havent been checking the forums much and I keep forgetting too.

Dr Disrespect -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/31/2018 8:58:32)

Feelsbadman. Asuka mentioned on Discord that the number of people participating in the tourney was a lot less than he hoped for.

Aura Knight -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/31/2018 13:16:44)

I just hope everyone who wanted to enter did it correctly. Wish there was some way to confirm without having to wait for actual pairings to be revealed later.

The Jop -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/31/2018 16:06:37)

See, I think even the forums would have gotten better results than having to tweet at Asuka, plus of course you could actually see who's participating.

Kiyone -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/31/2018 18:44:25)

@The Finnish Phoenix Lets begin. Bans or lack their of. Asuka wanted to keep character choice open as much as possible. Asuka could have easily ban all the op. Its more you didn't want to scare off too many player by not allowing them this or that char. For some players the Clam King might be their only op char. You have to remember how character is obtain and used.

You over thinking the whole lack of forum posting. 1. Its easier for me to do it since i'm forum staff and its what I do, not Asuka. 2. We had a design note post. Unless one of you guys where going to post and format said post. All that for Os and AQW also falls under my responsibility. This became more hey Kiyone is better with the forum. Let Kiyone, handle it type deal.

Lastly this isn't about you, this isn't about me, this isn't about who makes a better tester, this isn't about who post here on the forums, this isn't about who post on twitter. The reality is this. With OS project and OS game code. The devs feel safe with Asuka to do some work here. Which is big! Trust me I tried myself for that and I know insert names here have tried as well. But in the end due to if we messed up in slightest it can kill the game code. Its just how things are. I know its frustrating. I been threw all that with the last tourney. Its not easy thing. I wish I could calm your mind on this but thing I can do is assure you like what Asuka has plan for updates.

@Atreue Since first part of @the Fuinissh Phoenix

@The Warden. I'm sorry to hear that. If things go well will make sure t let ya know on future ones.

@The Jop I think we may have gotten the same amount. Its a mix of things. What people are willing to sign up for and I think is some tournament fatigue because of the two fan tournament that happen recently.

The Finnish Phoenix -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (8/31/2018 22:58:14)

Asuka banned Earth Elemental. There're a couple other free characters he banned, but the ban on Earth Elemental alone thwarts any attribution of his omissions to how the characters are obtained. Nobody has ever banned Earth Elemental before and when the question of which characters are unbalanced/the best comes up as it often does I've never seen Earth Elemental mentioned because that's just not the level at which it performs. Nobody has ever won a tournament with Earth Elemental. We had an Earth tournament before Great Pumpking or Tyrant Moose were released in which Earth Elemental was an eligible character. Some used it, including Riniti who used it at Level 20. Asuka was in that tournament so he should know. He lost unceremoniously, 0-2 to Axel and then 0-2 to Koar the Legend. I'm not precisely sure what he used given that he was the third person eliminated, but it was probably Earth Elemental. Neither accessibility of characters nor esoteric knowledge of how the game works due to being a Tester or otherwise serve as logical justifications for what was banned and what wasn't.

Bionic Bear -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (9/1/2018 11:24:43)

@TFP I agree that these bans are rather nonsensical. Earth Elemental being banned when Tyrant Moose isn't is utterly strange, but in any case, while I agree that the bans could have been handled better (particularly with CC - how could iron hide not be banned?) there are some things to think about.
I don't know what the twitter population is like, but the people on the OS forums are pretty hardcore. Most of us here have spent money on SGs and the all-important x-boosts. But for the average player, getting a character to level 20 is a monstrous grind. To get to level 20 (and thus be competitive in a tournament) a free player needs 606 wins, according to the wiki. That's a lot of time dedicated to a single character, considering that OS battles take a few minutes. As a casual player, I know that before I bought SGs, I despaired of ever getting anywhere close to 20. Even afterwards, I only have 1 level 20 character, a hanzo void that I leveled up for some reason, even though it's not a particularly good character.
So look at it from this perspective. You're a free player who really likes this cool-looking giant moose man that you captured once. Since he was so cool, you spent the majority of your OS time leveling him up. He's a legendary, so he must be good, right? After working for hours and hours, you finally get him to level 20. Some time later, you hear about a tournament on twitter. You want to enter with this character that you have put so much time into and then you find out that he's banned.
I can't speak for everyone, and I know that a lot of the forumites have a whole bunch of level 20s, but I only have one level 20 character. It's not even a good one. The next highest is level 19 monk. Below that are a whole bunch of low level characters that I got, spent time leveling up, and then got bored of. This is the reason why it makes sense to keep the ban list to a minimum. This isn't to say that the current bans are reasonable, this isn't to defend Asuka's decision on them, this is only to make it so that the average casual can play with whatever character they have. Is that the way for a proper, competitive tournament? No, and the lack of bans on CC furthers this idea, but despite the imposing name "Tournament of Champions," it's more a tournament intended to bring some interest back into the game than anything, which is unfortunate because I really enjoyed my forum tournament experiences (although I got demolished every time). But I can't help but think that you're looking for the hardcore experience of those forum tournaments in what is more of a casual-oriented event.

Asuka -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (9/1/2018 12:54:03)

So I seeee a few people have a few questions regarding different things. Sorry I been a busy busy bee these past couple of days but lets get started

1) The ban list
Admittedly, this ban wasn't put toooo much thought into it. I wanted to be lenient as I could for the first tournament and try to remember as best as I could every single complaint when these bois came out.The responses of people have been a little on the oof side, especially when Im trying haaarrddd to get more eyes on it. I can take critism but I roll my eyes when people start calling me different things

2) Future tournaments
The plan was after this tournament, another would follow which was muucchhh more detailed and thought out. The first is like this because its my little experiment. But as it is right now, I probably can't with the number of entrants, let alonne the possible number of no shows.

3) Yes, I did design Moosey boi's deck.

4) The earth elemental ban
A looootttt of people are not happy with this ban. This goes back to first day release complaints. If hes suddenly fell off a little, thats just me being old and I will use the "BACK IN MY DAY" defense. Also lets not say "x deserves/doesn't deserve to be a tester" thats honestly just quite rude

5) Why Twitter?
This is Asuka's way of trying to reach out to a broader audience. If I advertised a tournament just in the place with a steady base, there's no improvement. But if I advertise on AQW's Design Notes, Artix homepage and Twitter, thats more eyes.

If I missed a question, am sorry. You can leave them here and I'll see if I can get to them

Aura Knight -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (9/1/2018 14:46:35)

In the last tournament I was part of, there was confirmation of sign-ups throughout the week. And it might be better if in the future this is done for official AE tournaments too. That way, if someone signed up and isn't on such a list they can correct this before the deadline.

Fire alandry -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (9/1/2018 15:43:38)

I wish I could join this tournament. Unfortunately, I havn't access for computer most ot the week, and considering my time zone and the fact that I can't play on weekends because of religion.. Well, I don't want to do "no-show" to every battle.

About the bans: as a free player, I have only one lvl20 char: Volt eng. And he's always on the ban list for obvious reasons. In OS, there are Characters that are far stronger than others. Any free player would try his best to catch those, and train them and them only. So I agree with Kiyone about the ban list.

The Finnish Phoenix -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (9/1/2018 16:10:03)

Thank you for responding. [:)]

quote:

With due respect, nobody here called you anything (I checked) so there's no need for you to roll your eyes at anyone. Some consider eye-rolling "honestly just quite rude".

quote:

If you can't then there are others who can and there are others who can and will be hosting unofficial tournaments. If you were to mention them on the channels that you have, that could help promote them. Alina assisted in promoting and sponsoring prizes for D a w n's and DragonNation's tournaments, both of which were successful. Just because you can't do it doesn't mean there shouldn't be any official promotion of OverSoul, so if you can't then it would make sense for someone else to be given the chance to do so moving forward. Kiyone for example has hosted multiple successful tournaments here including Void Wars which was officially promoted.

3) Yes, I did design Moosey boi's deck.

Kudos, it's a cool deck and stronger than Earth Elemental's.

I'm glad that this can be acknowledged. That said, the same principle applies to Fiend of Vergill Boss, WitchBlade Boss, PumpkinLord which were powercrept by characters like Monk, Dire Monk and Taro which were in turn powercrept by characters like Thok and Clan King.

quote:

Also lets not say "x deserves/doesn't deserve to be a tester" thats honestly just quite rude

Okay, but why would it be rude to say that we have people deserving of staff roles? That was intended as a compliment to Kiyone, The Jop, clinton, atreue, Bionic Bear, the warden, Dr Disrespect, and Aura Knight, all of whom have been playing for years and want to see this game not only exist but thrive. Bionic Bear mentioned that the players on the forums include the most hardcore or devoted players, and that's true. I never said that you don't deserve the role and I'd prefer that we have more staff than less. When we were receiving updates you weren't the only tester and it doesn't make any more sense for you to be the only tester now. With the game struggling for revival, it's all the more necessary to have all hands on deck.

I appreciate your perspective as it applies to approaching a ban list in general as while mine is of a player who has levelled to 20 over a hundred times, I understand that that's not reflective of the community as a whole. It's common sense for any player to first and foremost gravitate towards the best characters and custom cards available to them. With that in mind and all else being equal, bans on the most powerful characters and custom cards would affect more players than bans on lesser characters/cards. That doesn't mean that less powerful characters/cards should be banned instead of more powerful characters, as the less powerful characters are already handicapped in their chances to win by being less powerful. With equally skilled pilots, Fiend of Vergill Boss, WitchBlade Boss and PumpkinLord are already at a disadvantage against Clan King, for them to be banned instead of Clan King, kicking them further into the ground when the odds were already against them is totally unnecessary and at that point it would be better to allow them all since those affected by the bans on Fiend of Vergill Boss, WitchBlade Boss and PumpkinLord wouldn't just be affected but needlessly affected. So yes, while banning the most powerful characters would affect more players, that's the point of a ban list in preventing stagnation and promoting diversity in character choice so that we don't all play Chaos Drakath or Clan King. A tournament should be accessible to as many players as possible, but shouldn't be winnable without certain degrees of effort and creativity. There is no casual vs. competitive dichotomy insofar as a tournament is concerned, because players must necessarily adopt a competitive mindset due to tournaments being a necessarily competitive event. The game could benefit from having non-competitive or co-operative events such as wars as they're held in games like AQ and DF in addition to tournaments, but tournaments are great incentives for otherwise casual players to play the game more regularly and become immersed. Retaining players is as important as drawing them.

If anything is going to be banned, the most powerful characters and cards should take precedence. That said, driving players away as in your scenario with Tyrant Moose should be avoided where possible. To that end I'd propose that tournaments be announced well in advance of taking place - even if it's a few months ahead of time then so be it. In addition to giving players more time to prepare, there'd be more time for more players to sign up resulting in a larger turnout. That's something the Dragon Nation tournament benefitted from to an extent by being announced a few weeks before it started.

Aura Knight -> RE: =OS= Tournament of Champions (9/1/2018 16:24:34)

Actually I haven't been playing for years but based on what I've experienced on this recent return, I kinda wish I had. Still, I'm not deserving to be listed among the others who really have been around since the very start. I may have made the account years back but only recently got back to playing.
