my idea is that ED becomes downloadable ( i know nightwraith already said that its coming ) and that we can do whatever we want with the files , and make our own version of it , just to have some fun with the files and make our own servers and play with friends

You make it sound as if the "files" were clay that anyone can sculpt into whatever they want.

I highly doubt anybody on the forums would actually benefit from ED being open-source because nobody here except for a couple people actually know how to work with that.
