How exactly does damage work. How does ATK and DEF factor in to damage? What's the point of stacking defensive gear if even having more defense than an enemy's attack will let them deal damage, which either implies that attacks done by enemies have a "minimum" amount of damage that cannot be reduced, or possible the implication of defense not affecting attack values.

Let me give u the best answer so far: Defense keeps me alive longer. The longer I live the more overall damage I will do. Defense for soloing.

I really want an official canon answer. Because sure, that's very true, defense does keep you alive longer, but one has to wonder: at what point is it useless to stack defense padded gear and start opting for attack oriented gear?

If there hasnt been one yet, I doubt one will come now. I dont think we need to think about it that much. even with all defense gear you can still get 600 atk. with all atk gear your atk is only 30-40% more. I just dont think it matters. When they figure out how to do threat and healing properly, when fights last longer than 20 seconds, maybe then it matter.

It's basically a multiplier/modifier to your hidden base stats.
The higher the number the better your atk/def will be.

Base stats are determined by your level.
Higher level = Higher Base stats.

This is pretty much why Enraged Valek always dodges so much when attacking him even though his bonus is only 50% crit when viewing his stats.
He's lvl 25 while we are only lvl16(for the moment at least).

That makes sense, but doesn't in the context of very low level enemies, like in Greenguard forest, whose base stats are so low, and yet somehow they can still deal damage to you. Which then leads me to assume their "base stats", even with a pitiful level of 1, somehow is greater than 700 to overcome my own defense stats? Doesn't make sense.

If its anything like "World of Warcraft", then the Defense stat is actually a "Defense Rating". It may show you a number, but its being converted into a percentage.

But there's a thing:
The more you grow in percentage, the more effective each 1% increase is, exponentially. Imagine it like this:

Lets say 100 defense points =10% damage resistance. You have 500 defense, equaling 50% resistance, right? Enemies take double the time to kill you. Now, add another 250 defense, and you get a total of 75% damage resistance.
Suddenly, for simply extra 250 points(half of what you had), the time it takes for enemies to kill you DOUBLES again.
Increase the total to 900 points/90% resistance, and enemies take 10 times more to kill you compared to if you had ZERO defense. Increase it to 950 points, and enemies take 20 times more to kill you. FOR JUST +50 POINTS.

See where this is going? If it is RAW numbers, it's unbalanced. If its a RAW percentage, it goes crazy too.

To counter this exponential increase in effectiveness, they make it so the more defense you add, the harder it is to increase the percentage, so you could never reach 100%.
This makes the defense stat grow linearly in effectiveness, like the attack/health/mana already do.

So regardless of how high your defense is, even the lowest level enemies will still deal some damage to you.
