With Upgrade 30.2, INT can now be raised to 200. That means extra bonus damage on every spell you use. And since there has been a change, I've remade an older guide by Tourist, who decided to compare the best spells of AQ. I am now trying to continue that trend for as long as possible

A character with 200 INT has the greatest damage potential. They would get up to 200/8, or up to 25(!) bonus damage per hit of a spell. Please note that some class armor abilities (eg. Arrow Assault on the Knight Class Armor) do melee or ranged damage. Those need 200 STR and 200 DEX to get to their full damage potential.

Assumptions & Spreadsheets
  • 35 Magic Defence, 50 LUK and DEX
  • I used Madking's, blues's and EricDB's spell spreadsheets for the average damage calculations

    Misc. Items

    1. Urn of Daryngord: +2 BtH, +2 random damage
    2. Seven Leaf Clover: +2 BtH
    3. Treasure Box: +2 BtH
    4. Mage Globe: +1 BtH, +2 random damage
    5. Four-Leaf Clover: +1 BtH
    6. Everfrozen Shard: +1 BtH
    7. Intellect Scroll: +1 BtH
    8. Mermazon Kelp: +1 BtH
    9. Rogue's Charm: +1 BtH

NB: These are added to the standard boost that you recieve. This can be calculated by using this guide

    Average damage: 117

    200 INT / DEX
    Total damage: 76-422
    Average damage: 249

Location: The Beginning of the End

Comments: Meteors narrowly beats Arrows of Virtue at 200 INT / DEX, but the difficulties in deciding a spell drop to pretty much zero from then on. Frost Elf Attack no longer quite cuts the mustard, being beaten by a spell which is readily available for no real money. You could also get 2,000 ZTokens from selling this spell which you could put towards a house. In the middle is MegaInferno. This spell is the former best spell available for gold, and if this is the way inflation is going, then it may not remain useful for much longer. That said, it offers excellent value for money. Solar Incinerator is the worst out of the compared fire spells. Although it only costs 30 MP to cast, it suffers from a lack of hits and power
Verdict: Meteors >> Arrows of Virtue >> Frost Elf Attack >> MegaInferno >> Fire Wave >> FireBall Z (Level 65) >> Solar Incinerator >> All other Fire spells

    Water Spells
    QWA

    Whirl Tide (L65)

Riiiptide *Most Damaging* * Most Accurate*
    Mana Cost: 130 MP
    6 hits
    8-27, 8-27, 8-27, 8-27, 8-27, 8-27 damage
    +50 BtH
    Magic, Water

    0 INT / DEX
    Total damage: 48-162
    Average damage: 105

    200 INT / DEX
    Total damage: 48-312
    Average damage: 180
Location: Talk Like A Pirate Day shop

Comments: The new spell, Riiiptide, blasts Whirl Tide out of the water. Whirl Tide edges out Aqua Purge with 200 INT. With Whirl Tide's lower mana cost, slightly better bonus to hit, and more total hits, Whirl Tide is better than Aqua Purge. It becomes better than Aqua Purge when your INT is 200. The former queen of water spells, Amplify, has been knocked off it's throne too. Riiiptide does, on average, 30 more damage at 200 INT

Verdict: Riiiptide >> Amplify (Fully Charged) >> Whirl Tide (Level 65) >> Aqua Purge >> All other Water spells

    11th Day of FrostVal

    Brilhado Feathers
    Mana Cost: 175
    8 hits
    8-15, 8-15, 8-15, 8-15, 8-15, 8-15, 8-15, 8-15 damage
    +20 BtH
    Magic, Wind

    0 INT / DEX
    Total damage: 64-200
    Average damage: 103.25

    200 INT / DEX
    Total damage: 64-400
    Average damage: 232

Comments: For a pure mage, Dragons Wings is better than Arrow Assault, although these are both pummelled into the ground by Brilhado Feathers (although even Brilhado Feathers is beaten easily by the seasonal rare Vortex). It is isn't rare either, so grab it while you can. Hybrids, rangers, and warriors should highly consider purchasing the Knight Class Armor and getting it to at least L7. Arrow Assault has lower mana cost and way higher damage potential. The only downside is the natural +0 BtH. However, with 14 hits total, even if 3 or 4 of them miss, you will still do a ton of damage. The Ninja Stars ability is very good because of its +50 BtH, but is still way outclassed by Arrow Assault. For those of you wondering, a pure mage with 0 STR and 200 DEX would still get a high average damage from Arrow Assault. With 200 DEX, a pure mage should still choose Arrow Assault over Invisible Blast

Verdict: Vortex >> Brilhado Feathers >> 11th Day of FrostVal >> Dragon's Wings >> Arrow Assault >> Ninja Stars >> Invisible Blast >> All other Wind spells

    Diamond Dust *Most Damaging*
    Mana cost: Guardian -- 280, Adventurer -- 300
    6 hits
    14-39, 14-39, 14-39, 14-39, 14-39, 14-39
    +21 BtH

    0 INT / DEX
    Total damage: 84-234
    Average damage: 126

    200 INT / DEX
    Total damage: 84-544
    Average damage: 303

Comments: The new wars spell, Jack Frost In The Box, beats nearly every other Ice spell hands down at 0 INT / DEX, but loses with hardly any fight as the INT stat increases. For this reason, I recommend this spell for low-level Mages or any-level Warriors only. Diamond Dust is quite simply the best Ice spell around. If you have it, you should certainly keep it, and if you don't have it, then go for Evil Shadow or Ice Nine instead. However, this will be reversed after the Sweep (see end of guide for details) because Ice Nine's BtH will hit more against the increased monster defences. 9th Day of FrostVal has been knocked off its perch of supremacy effortlessly, and should only be kept until you have Ice Nine or Evil Shadow. The next best, and an annual rare, is Ice Needles with 228 damage at 200 INT / DEX. Algorstorm has been thoroughly superseded, though. Its BtH is beaten by Jack Frost In The Box, and its damage to every other Ice spell compared. Currently, Jack Frost In The Box is available, so replace Algorstorm with it while you can!

Verdict: Diamond Dust >> Evil Shadow >> Ice Nine >> Ice Needles >> 9th Day of FrostVal >> Jack Frost in the Box >> Algorstorm >> All other Ice spells
After Sweep: Diamond Dust >> Ice Nine >> Evil Shadow >> Ice Needles >> 9th Day of FrostVal >> Jack Frost in the Box >> Algorstorm >> All other Ice spells

Earth Fury *Most Damaging* *Most Accurate* *Most Efficient*

    6 hits
    10-30, 10-30, 10-30, 10-30, 15-55, 15-55 damage
    +30, +30, +30, +30, +20, +20 BtH

    Average damage: 125.25

    200 DEX / INT
    Total damage: 70-380
    Average damage: 225

    Location: Guardian Shop

Comments: Without a doubt, Earth Fury is the best Earth spell you can get, beating Earth Rage hands down, in spite of the pricey mana cost. This is a must-get for all player over level 75 (unless you want to keep that slot free). Sadly, Moglin War Party fails to make the cut, since h dog discovered that it doesn't take stat bonuses

Verdict: Earth Fury >> Earth Rage >> Moglin War Party >> All other Earth spells

    200 DEX / INT
    Total damage: 70-380
    Average damage 247.5

    Location: Lightning Rod (weapon)

Comments: Chain Lightning wins easily, helped through by its reduced MP cost and ability to save you a spell slot. The 10% extra damage given from Lightning Rod helps as well. In second place is MegaShock, the former spell king (or queen, depending how you look at it), and this is still a more than adequate replacement for other spells if you can endure the high mana cost. Third place goes to 7th Day of FrostVal, which places Mental Energy and Purity Portal at the bottom of the league. Interesting to see how spells that were once considered to be overpowered are now the weaker ones

Verdict: Chain Lightning >> MegaShock >> 7th Day of FrostVal >> Mental Energy >>Purity Portal >> All other Energy spells

Comments: The new release of NightBane's Redemption trumps all other Light spells in the game. With an average damage of 279 for people with 200 INT and DEX, this beats Supernova by a substantial margin. Although the spell costs more than the normal amount, this will become an average for the new spells, after the Sweep. This is also available for Non-Guardians. However, the damage you can do will increase substantially as your stats decrease, making it impractical for Syphon Vamp. Illuminate Ultra is good if you are up against a monster which has high blocking values, as there is more chance of hitting. Truly, NightBane's Redemption, Supernova and Illuminate Ultra are the only possible Light spells you need for higher levels

Verdict: NightBane's Redemption >> Supernova >> Illuminate Ultra >> Star Forge (Level 65) >> Light Blast >> Sunburst >> All other Light spells

Comments: DarkSplatter is quite simply the best darkness spell in existance at the moment. For anyone who hasn't got 1,000 ZTokens, go for Ninjat Madness. If you can't get past the quest to obtain it, then go for Darkness Dragon Ambush. It is by no means the best darkness spell, but it is a good middle-of-the-road spell. The worst spell is obviously Shadowbat swarm, and should be avoided like the plague. It has the lowest damage and the least hits. There is really no advantage to that spell. Groglurk Rage is a good stopgap spell for the three levels until you can get Darkness Dragon Ambush

Verdict: DarkSplatter >> Ninjat Madness >> Darkness Dragon Ambush >> Groglurk Rage >> Shadowbat swarm

Note: Many builds that involve high INT choose DarkSplatter for the animation speed. This allows them to farm monsters very easily in long quests

    200 INT / DEX
    Total damage: 104-562

Comments: PowerWord Red Fog is clearly one of the best multi-elemental spells, averaging over 300 damage. However, this is beaten by NightBane's Howl, which does 333 damage at maxed INT and DEX. This beats Elemental Explosion, which averages nearly 200 damage when you have 200 INT and 12th Day of FrostVal which averages 225 damage at max stats. In second place comes Yellow Snow Doom Attack, which averages 233 damage at 200 DEX / INT. The htird best spell is Elemental Singularity, which averages 251 damage at 200 DEX and INT, although the efficiency is miniscule. Avalanche Extreme averages 178 damage when all 13 hits are landed on the enemy, beaten by Elemental Explosion and 8th Day of FrostVal. It is a good Megogg killer. Since this is a rare and can only be obtained during Frostval (and 8/17/2005), Avalanche Attack is the next best multi-elemental FrostVal spell, now available permanently from FrostVal. An interesting spell for warriors is the 10th Day of FrostVal, which doesn't eat into the precious MP bar, but rather your HP bar, releasing your MP for casts of healing spells. For those of you lucky people who have Major Award, get your INT up to 200 and start casting this spell! It is notable that the new spell, Manasplosion, does 273 damage for 495 MP points. This does a large amount of damage, but at a high price. However, when combined with Father Time or Eye of Naab, you can get 2 casts for only 495 Mana

Note: I have used 495 Mana instead of the upper bound of 500 for the damage calculations for Manasplosion because it is the closest I could get to it on the spreadsheet

Verdict: NightBane's Howl >> PowerWord Red Fog >> Major Award >> Manasplosion >> Elemental Singularity >> Yellow Snow Doom Attack >> 12th Day of FrostVal >> Elemental Explosion >> 10th Day of FrostVal >> 8th Day of FrostVal >> Avalanche Extreme >> Sila's Wrath >> Sila's Rage >> Book of Scholars (Level 70) >> Elemental Doom >> All other Neutral or Multi-elemental spells

    Scrambler Beam *Scrambling* *Accurate*
    Mana Cost: 100 MP
Effect: One hit of 10-10 magic light damage with +50% BtH. Here's a quote from the encyclopedia:
    quote:

    Encyclopaedia
If your enemy doesn't block this hit, the scrambling explained in the description will happen. For example, Carnax. His ice resistance is 99%, which means he cannot be frozen. Using scrambler beam will make his ice resistance become 100% or more, 7 times out of 8 (because Carnax has only one elemental resistance which is less than 100%). In this case, Carnax will be freezable. Note that you can't freeze ice monsters (Monster with Ice as their base element), even if you make their ice resistance 100% or more.
Bad side effect: Melee, Ranged and Magic defences will have a random increase between +5 and +15

This spell is very useful for when you are fighting Wolfwing and Ziragat.

    Best Spells
    QBS

As requested by Madking, this is a list of the 8 spells you would want in your inventory. They have triumphed over other spells, and are the best spells money can buy. Please note that the storage slots represent merely the spells that are present in them. They do not include weapons, shields, armors, etc

    Fire -- Meteors
    Water -- Riiiptide
    Wind -- Vortex
    Ice -- Diamond Dust
    Earth -- Earth Fury
Energy -- Chain Lightning or MegaShock
    Light -- NightBane's Redemption
    Darkness -- DarkSplatter

    Storage 1 -- Scrambler Beam
Storage 2 -- Pumpkin Patch 300 ( Heal Wounds if you can't get that)

Note #1-- If you have Dragons Wings, Arrow Assault or Chain Lightning, you have an extra inventory slot free. Use it to buy Pumpkin Patch 300 or Heal Wounds, and save
yourself 200 ZTokens at the same time

Note #2 -- After the Knights of Order have completed the Sweep (where they rebalance most of the items in the game), Ice Nine will be the best Ice spell due to its +27 BtH

Well, that's it. My first remade guide ever. Please feel free to tell me what you think of it and give comments and critique. I hope that you find this guide very useful for choosing what spells to keep as you reach the higher levels. If you have any questions, just PM me and I will respond as quickly as I can. I am usually on the forums [nearly] every day, so you should get a pretty fast response.

I see no problems with this guide. Just remove the picture with the broken link.

Also, I suggest going over the old version of this guide for replies, for example, I posted that Lightning Rod can also save a spell slot (in Best Spells part). After you've went through the replies, PM me again and I'll lock the old one and move this to the main Guides forum. Also, could you add the link of the old guide just for reference? Thanks.

    ~Z

    Approved.

According to the encyclopedia, Supernova costs 175 mana.
And just a suggestion, in the table of damage, add a note about Chain Lightning that it recieves the 10% damage boost from Lightning Rod.

I've just updated the table of damage. I forgot about the MP difference between Supernova and FEA. Updated
Edit: I just realised something. This guide is the longest running guide in the Guides forum!

One problem with your table of contents... You MIGHT want to use letter combinations you won't find anywhere else...

when searching for Water with WA... I get warlics. You might want to use letters like qza, qzb, etc. As Q and Z will never be together in the English language.

You may wish to try and turn on the Case-Sensitive / Match case option on your internet browser. For those that don't, I'll put a letter in front of it

It will be good if you used 45 adjusted defense instead of 43, since 45 is the official number in the forums.

I think you should also include the fact that IU>SuperNova and MI>FEA when adjusted defense >51 and when LUK =0, making MI and IU more suitable for higher levels where meeting mobs with 51 defense or more is pretty common.

Under the comments for light spells, it mention that Suburst is the best spell for non-guardians.
Not true. Illuminate Ultra is accessible by non-guardians. Just a tiny slip up.

Thank you fl!p !t, I'll update it now. What I'm eventually planning to do is to make a hierarchy of the best spells. I'll try to include the information wherever I can that is visible

    Example

@Glory: That's assuming max DEX, if you have low DEX, Jack should to better than IN.

I'll add Jack Frost In The Box, but not Dragons of Calladus because it summons a guest, so there is no need to compare it as it does no damage

Can you add the Last two spells to the Multi-Elemental damage list?

You also need to give it a 10% boost. Its the staff's special ability.
