If you've been grinding through Path of Exile 2's latest update, Dawn of the Hunt, you're probably feeling a little conflicted. As a long-time veteran of the franchise, I've seen GGG knock it out of the park and I've also seen them trip over their own ambitions. Sadly, Dawn of the Hunt lands somewhere in the middle. Sure, the update brought some meaningful changes and fresh features that showed real promise, but the new Azmeri Spirits mechanic? It seriously needs a rework. First off, following these spirits is a nightmare. The spirits move at an annoyingly slow pace, dragging you through packs of deadly mobs, often without any real reward at the end. And in PoE 2's slower, more tactical combat system, getting swarmed because you're babysitting a wisp is just a recipe for disaster.

To make matters worse, the loot you get for all that effort? Barely worth it. In a game where loot is king, the rewards from Azmeri Spirits feel like a slap in the face. Divine Orbs are still rare as ever, even with high rarity stats stacked up. GGG says patch 0.2.0g will boost spirit rewards, but honestly, that's just a band-aid on a broken bone.

The Core Problem With Azmeri Spirits

The heart of the problem isn't just the weak loot. It's the mechanic itself. Being forced to chase a spirit through dangerous terrain, rather than engaging enemies at your own pace, feels completely at odds with what makes Path of Exile fun. It's not engaging, it's not strategic, and it sure as hell isn't rewarding.

Plus, if you lose track of the spirit or die during the chase, it's gone. Vanished. All that effort wasted. It adds unnecessary stress to what should be a thrilling and rewarding gameplay experience. Even during the campaign, it feels like more of a hassle than an exciting feature.

How GGG Could Fix Azmeri Spirits

Look, it's not all doom and gloom. There's a pretty simple fix that could save this mechanic and actually make it fun: make spirits leave a trail.

Imagine this. Instead of desperately following a random spirit across half the map, the spirit leaves behind a visible trail from the start of the zone. You could choose when to engage the monsters along the trail. Maybe you clear mobs first, loot safely, then tackle the Rare boss powered up by the spirit. It'd still be dangerous, sure, but it would be on your terms, not the spirit's.

This change would keep the "hunt" theme alive—following a trail, tracking your prey, setting your ambush—without forcing players into reckless suicide runs. It fits thematically, it fits mechanically, and it fits the new endgame design where Rare monsters are marked on the map anyway.

Why the Current System Fails Players

Path of Exile thrives when it gives players the tools to be smart about danger. Right now, Azmeri Spirits punish players for trying to engage with the content. You're penalized for playing smart—clearing mobs first, scouting ahead, or even taking your time to strategize.

And let’s be honest here: PoE players are some of the most dedicated gamers out there. We don't mind difficult content. What we mind is bad content. There's a big difference between "challenging" and "annoying," and Azmeri Spirits, as they currently stand, fall into the latter category.

Patch 0.2.0g: A Step, But Not the Solution

Yes, patch 0.2.0g is aiming to improve spirit rewards. Better loot will definitely help, but it won't fix the underlying issue with the mechanic. You can slap a golden band-aid on a broken system, but players are still going to get frustrated if the core gameplay loop isn't fun.

We need better design, not just better prizes. GGG has shown they can pivot and improve—look at how they've handled League reworks in the past—so there's still hope. But players need to keep the pressure up. If we stay vocal, maybe they'll implement a real fix in a future patch.

Final Thoughts on Dawn of the Hunt and Azmeri Spirits

Path of Exile 2's Dawn of the Hunt update brought a lot of positive changes to the table. Combat pacing, skill improvements, and general quality of life tweaks are all steps in the right direction. But the Azmeri Spirits mechanic? It sticks out like a sore thumb.

Chasing slow-moving spirits through death zones for meager loot isn't fun, and it doesn't match the smart, tactical gameplay that Path of Exile is known for. A simple adjustment—leaving a trail to follow—could make this mechanic actually enjoyable and keep it in line with the rest of PoE 2's design philosophy.
