I feel the Sleighguard Frostvanala Staff is so underwhelming as a mage. The design choice for the whole GB set is around barriers. But to benefit with this weapon you need another spell or armor spell to even use the clickable skill on the weapon.
For Rangers/Warriors you can simply just attack for the benefit of gaining barrier and in turn works out well when using the One Storm Armour (Frostval Giftbox armor) which is basically the set. As it is considered a skill not a spell this obviously works together well. The problem arises when using the equivalent as a Mage, due to the armor being classed as a skill the weapon cannot benefit whilst using the set.

I feel like the armor should take on previous design choices that have been previously used, where if you are using a Melee/Range/Magic weapon the armor skill takes that into account. So melee/range its a skill and vice versa if you are using a magic weapon, then the skill becomes a spell. This way you can actually benefit from it being a 'Set' because at the moment there is no reason to use the items together, the weapon isn't gaining any utility unless you are using other spells.

If you are using a Warrior or Ranger the set works great, the synergy is there. But as a Mage not its not synergistic at all.

I'm not a fan of the mage aspect of the set but it does work. My issue is the inconvenience compared to melee/range. Skill 1 changing to mp cost might be a fix but with the barrier consumed for damage boost it might be overpowered. Skill 2 used to its max of 3 activations allows for barrier stacking but doesn't make constant use of mage weapon effect. I'll stick to melee. Mage is useable but more effort and not as nice.

I was thinking along the lines of the Santa Avenger set, where dependent on the weapon, the first skill changes to either melee/magic and the cost changes from SP to MP. This would of made the set way more beneficial imo.

Yes, i agree with you, way more convenient on a melee setup, just have to jump through a few extra hurdles to get the most out of it on a mage.
