Guns are fun. I recommend the ones from that woman in the guardian tower. Sure, you have to watch a bit of a cutscene with some nice music, but worth the wait, I tell ya. The Osprey guns you can get are sort of.....not sporting compared to the other ones.
I sort of am sad that there isn't a mage selection, but at the same time, it's great that they haven't killed ranged fighters right off the bat this time.
Note: techs are like magic but don't actually hit with magic type. You'll see.
