I don't really know what open-source is. And I'm really careful with stuff like this; I almost downloaded a program I had to pay for once. So I am extremely cautious when it comes to stuff like this. Sure, it'd be good with writing a novel, but not so good when your parents get the bill and take away your laptop. [>:]

Well this one is most certainly safe and free. :P

Open-source is like a kind of philosophy. It's basically freedom of information but with more freedom, more information and more Internet. The author of a certain program/whatever can make his/her program open-source essentially by releasing the source code, the basis of the program, to the public. The program itself will most likely be free, since the author is releasing the source code anyway. Plus, open-source programs often have a large community dedicated to the advancement of the software. Some of them even contribute to development. The good, "stable" versions come out whenever something big is added or fixed, and that part is usually from the community. If anything, open-source should be the one thing on the Internet that you trust. But all the big projects often have a Wikipedia article. So research helps a bit, too. ;)

I still tend to look around the site for days, seeing if it's free or not. I'm very over-protective of my laptop.

^ Lolz, whenever I install new software, I have nightmares about weird viruses and crashes etc that refuse to be fixed and then end up arguing with the dream about how its logic is flawed, such-and-such should have worked, where did /it/ learn to use a computer, etc. and then terminate the dream in disgust. =]
