Lyra -> =Story and Dev= 20May2010 Go Fly A Kite! (5/20/2010 10:27:30)

I’ve been an avid player of AQ for a couple of years now, and while I never post much on the forums, I read them pretty faithfully. Late last year, I was reading a thread about players wanting more quests to use their Fujin armor in, and Falerin encouraged players to write and submit the kind of quests they’d like to see.
I thought, “I could do that,” so I did. I sent my completed script to Falerin, who not only decided to use it in-game, but invited me to be part of the AE team. And I’ve been having a blast, ever since. I’ve gotten to meet all my favorite NPCs, got a look at all the hot new weapons before they come out (and even got to test a few), and have had a chance to find out about all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to make AQ happen.
I’ve been writing for a long time – wrote for several newspapers, have a couple of novels out – but writing for AQ is unlike anything I’ve ever tried before. It’s hard! Getting in plenty of action, making sure the NPCs are all true to their characters, working in a few puns here and there . . .
I hope you like my first AQ quest – just hold on to your kite strings. And if Cysero offers to customize your kite? Better wear a helmet!

As near as I can remember Lyra has combined two different events we had encouraged people to submit ideas for what sort of quests they would like to see. And we had asked people to submit ideas for what they would like to use the wind armor for.

We never expected people to submit complete quests to us and we certainly never expected a quest as delightful as Lyra's own. Lyra's quest however presented the team with a puzzle.

While we can use suggestions we cannot directly use player submitted content itself. Writing and art has to be generated by our team in order to prevent potential problems. Lyra's work though was categorically outstanding and I knew instantly we had to use it.

This presented Galanoth and I with a puzzle. We could not use fan material of this sort. We could only use team material. Then the answer struck like lightning.... and there is some of that in the quest too incidentally. We had to convert the fan material into team material and the easiest way to do that was to invite Lyra onto the team.

Now I do not want you thinking that it was a simple process or that it was cut and dry, but as you well know, the majority of our Staff were community members first and Lyra's resume was quite impressive. Falerin accepted the Scribe into his employ (both in and out of character) and the rest is history.

This quest is a first taste of the Lady Lyra's considerable talent. Let us know what you think of the event... and stay tuned for more dear friend for the journey has just begun.
