PivotalDisorder -> Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 3:12:02)

I know a lot of people like to act completely different when they are playing a game, cause they are just on the internet and no one can call them
out on it all. now if for each duel you were actually sat across from the player, do you think they would be quite so arrogant etc

I get kids trolling me all the time, but not once since i was about 9yrs old has any kid, or anyone else my own age for that matter trolled
me to my face. seems to be unique to people hiding behind the so called safety of the internet. [I don't fight and that wasn't my point]

Im considering writing a paper on this, specifically regarding the ED community. their are so many psychological markers that can be
easily recognised. they can make a lot of people look pretty small and insignificant as actual human beings. im kinda tempted to really
flesh it out. a ton of things annoy me in game, but in the end its just a game, what I get annoyed by is all those players who always
jump straight to whatever makes them powerful and high above those who threaten them on some deep rooted psychological level that
they probably don't even realise exists. the part that makes me laugh is they all believe they are an original player of vast importance.

anyways, I bolded the part i wanted to discuss :) ^^

SouL Prisoner -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 3:21:16)

well i gree wid u but (wats ur point) theirs nthing that can be done about this!

1st Horseman -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 3:48:50)

There is a thread like this in every gd im begginning to think its just aqw players leaking into other games

PivotalDisorder -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 3:50:39)

I never even finished killing the first mob on AQW.

IsaiahtheMage -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 11:45:58)

Agreed. It is because people like to act all tough and all bad doing and saying whatever they want and can get away with it because their behind the safety of their computer. I can assure you more then half of the people would not act so ignorant,arrogant and so tough if you where dueling on the computer sitting beside each other. No one has the guts to call someone a "Mother Fkin Azz Mofo!" to their faces. Unless you plan on getting the living well you know kicked out of you.

Wraith -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 11:51:10)

Even though I'm sorta jumpy in real life (a new school does that to me), I go for aloof and unfeeling in battles, unless I know someone.

PD -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 12:47:23)

Actually, how we act in game would the similar to how we would act in real life because like real life, ED is extremely Capitalistic. In fact, it's as if ED were the reflection of our capitalistic society.

Silver Sky Magician -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 13:08:11)

@PD

Actually, PD, our virtual actions are more like a reflection of how we would act in real life given that amount of freedom and power. A reflection of our true selves, more accurately.

Xendran -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 14:07:13)

If the person sat across from me, they would realize how much bigger than them i am (for the most part.).
So no, they wouldnt.

Fay Beeee -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 14:26:52)

Well I choose to believe that there is good in all people.
That is how I am in real, and I hope here also.

PivotalDisorder -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 14:29:34)

@Fay: even if their is good in all people, does it make up for the "sins" they have commited ?

Fay Beeee -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 14:36:14)

^ No it does not. But neither should the sins of the father pass down to the son.

frosty123 -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 14:37:08)

Well if they do good actions and apoljize for the sins than mabye

Stabilis -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 15:41:44)

now if for each duel you were actually sat across from the player, do you think they would be quite so arrogant etc

A person's attitude in a virtual fantasy is a reflection of their: yes, ego, and, viewpoint on justice. If you think the same way Gandhi does you will reflect compassion and tolerance for your friends and acquaintances online. When you live in a fantasy, your mindset is a fantasy and you do as you please. The problem is that not everyone gets the same education so not our group as a whole can be identified by a certain belief. You may not understand how to care for another person because you don't do it. If we sat next to them and you looked them in the eyes you acknowledge them as a person, and you treat them as a person, not a human or creature. You exercise a deep understanding and we stop being tools to our own chaos.

DeathGuard -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 16:13:41)

I feel like this thread has a good point, as Silver stated, the attitude we have here are the reflections of what we want to be in real life, in some cases not all. I think the personas have each kind of mind and their own style of expressing themselves. Little kids behave that way, is obviously what happens with us in our childhood, I was really hyperactive and break many things through out all the house, we experienced than once and we must understand and let them be the way they are to the children, no matter how mean, botherful or any other attitude they have toward us.

One Winged Angel1357 -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 16:26:49)

Here is something interesting back in 7th grade, i have a great memory becuase it was years ago, i had to write an essay on how what you look like in a video game affects your behavior.

Just Skip over this it will be slightly above that E10+ if you do not fit that rating. Highlight to read below.

They tested a handful of outfits on different genders. Lets start with Females if they played for i beleive it was 4 hours in some skimpy outfit they took on a flirty persona but if they did the same four hours in peasant rags they became shy and tried to hide no matter what there real life persona was.
Now for guys they did a different test so to speak, They had guys play for four hours dressed as a member of the KKK and they became increasly more violent and angry as the four hours went on. Then they played for four hours in a Tux after awhile they started acting like real gentlemen.

So according to the data, even if you didnt read it just play along and pretend you did, us going around in warmongering outfits in a warmongering game should make us act more violent in said game

LambO -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 17:46:40)

Way I act in-game I would act to anyone sat next to me or where ever...

InceptionAE -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 18:04:16)

People are ignorant and you can do nothing to stop them. There will always be atleast one person in this world whom is ignorant always.

LatinLover/Martini -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 21:13:32)

I thought I'd comment on this cause I completely understand where you are coming from.

In game, I am 100% myself. I act myself wherever I go. I get trolled all the time people calling me a man or something that makes no sense. It can get annoying. But one thing you must know, I dont and will not change for anyone, I change when I want change.

Cinderella -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 21:24:14)

This phenomenon has been recorded for quite a while- the anonymity allows a person to take on a new identity or reject societal expectations. For example, women will become more violent than men in an anonymous video game, where nobody knows that she is a woman. There's also a bit of a "high" of getting attention, even if it's negative attention. If you've heard of Jonathan Gabriel's Greater Internet Theory (Penny Arcade reference) then you're familiar with the phenomenon of how a normal person can turn into a pretty horrible person if given anonymity (and the associated freedom of lasting repercussions) along with an audience.

LatinLover/Martini -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 21:27:08)

Cinderella, I think your pretty much right. And what I want to add is that you can be pretty much who you want to be on this game, which I think attracts people to online games, Is having the support of people you dont have the support of in your real life.

PivotalDisorder -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 21:40:05)

reminds me of the Milgram experiment.

hard for me to quote, but feel free to read it if ur interested lol

PD -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 21:48:08)

I know in South Korea they require people to log in with a Residential Registration Numbers to access internet (And therefore, track them) and other personal services like Banks and such. It pretty much reduced Internet Bullying and Cybertrolling by more than half because everyone gets to track you down; Unlike an IP which can be manipulated, your RRN cannot (Think of it like an account name: Passwords can be changed, but the Account Username cannot), so therefore any cyber-bullying and infraction of public services DO have Repercussions. Needless to say, it's pretty effective for stopping trolls and spammers.

I've heard a story where the system was so effective, one time a student tried to troll and cyberbully (Religious discrimination) a kid on an internet forum, and the next day, people tracked his Real Life identity, and the rest is history.

Perhaps the US can try the same?

Aere -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 21:50:20)

It's the story of the Prince and the Pauper. Dress the poor man in clothing befitting a king, and he'll fill the persona. And vice versa.

But if I played across from the person who I was dueling, I'd probably smile as I won. Even more so if the person across from me went on about how great he was.

Cinderella -> RE: Peoples Personas (9/11/2011 22:10:36)

@PD- the issue of internet anonymity is one that is pretty complicated. While the real-life repercussions are a deterrent against trolls, cyberbullies, and spammers, that's not the only population who would be punished by the end of online anonymity.

For example, the same anonymity that keeps that troll calling you a noob on the other end of the connection protected and free to troll is the same anonymity that allows me to hide behind the name "Cinderella", and the other AE staff to keep their real-life families and selves safe. Nightwraith and Titan are allowed to remain somewhat anonymous and not have to worry about players calling their houses, or girlfriends, or families on some game-related matter.
