UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye

A guide of the UCaG, general discussions of the UCaG and a Welcome/Goodbye thread!

"The UCaG is a playground. Know it, and you will enjoy it even more."

~DragonYugi

----

The Unofficial Contests and Games Board

The Unofficial Contests and Games board (also known as the UCaG) is the place where you come to play games and contests created by other users. As the name implies, the contests in this board are unofficial. In-game prizes will not be given as prizes, but it is possible to win things from other boards, such as signatures from the Creative Art Forum.

Important! Remember that there is already an existing forum for RolePlaying here. This is the forum for games. A game or a contest has a defined goal that a player must achieve to "win". A game or a contest can be played over and over. Role Plays do not fit this description.

To create a game, you'll need to first post it in the Pending Contests and Games forum. There the game will be reviewed before approval or denial.

Before making a game, it is a requirement to read the =UCaG= rules.

The Unofficial Contests and Games OOC Board

Discussion threads for the games in the UCaG are located here. It also contains the thread for nominations for Game of the Month. You can make threads for pending games, but keep in mind that the thread will be deleted if the game is denied.

  • Action & Reaction - An A&R is an Action and Reaction game. A&R games generally work with the creator of the game posting updates for the players, and the players post reactions to that. It is important in A&R games that players do not take over the game and only post reactions to their characters. Otherwise, it crosses the line into RP territory and is locked. Generally, A&R games require applications
  • Biography - A small or big block of text describing the history and past experiences of a person or a character; commonly abreviated as "Bio".
  • Contest - A competition, especially one in which entrants perform separately and are rated by judges.
  • Forum Strategy Game - A complicated strategy game that puts you in the role of a commander/ruler. These are usually statistic based and can be challenging to beginners. As a general rule, A&R games have you focus on a single character or group whereas FSG games let you control larger groups.
  • Game Creator - The creator of a game. He has the right to allow or refuse players. However, this is not a position that gives you higher standing over others.
  • Out of Character/Context - Commonly known as the OOC, an OOC is discussion thread of a game.
  • Quick Reply - Also know as Post After Me (PAM) games, they are fun and easy to play. Most of them have simple rules that do not require applications. Quick Reply games do not require OOC threads; discussion of these games belongs here in the General UCAG OOC.

    Introduction

    When you first post here, we encourage you to introduce yourself to the community. Here are some questions by steel blade that could help.
    What was the reason you came in to the UCaG Community in the first place? - (Was it to create a game or just to join in the fun?)
    In all of your creations, what was the game you're most proud of and why? - If applicable.
    What inspired you to make...
  • your favorite created game?
  • your first game?
    What was your first game you have played in the UCaG?
    What was your favorite game you have played in the UCaG?

    Acknowledgments

    Let's try this again. I am posting this as Darkflame was unable to because RL requires sleep.
    The previous thread became a cesspool of off-topicness, flaming and trolling. I would highly suggest that people who post from here on out stick to the topic at hand and leave off harassing and attacking each other. This kind of environment is not conducive to unity and the community importance.

    IF you come across rule violations, instead of contributing to it and encouraging it by posting, report it, ignore it and try to post on-topic without ANY referral to the rule breaking or rule breakers.

    Is it alright if I make my own superthread of games, news, etc.? Sendai did that months ago, named it "Sendai's Box o' Games".

    Kosefira -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/10/2011 1:44:25)

    As long as you put all the links in and remain on topic, I'm fine with that

    Heroic Necro -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/13/2011 15:33:09)

    So, yeah, Supes. Can we get an OOC for the Unlikely Chronicles please? I can still see the first page of the old one with Google's Cache thing if you need it.

    Superemo -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/14/2011 0:45:04)

    Getting an OOC for The Unlikely Chronicles is the fourth thing on my list of what needs to be done. Number one is making sure that Darkness doesn't die. One character has reached a character-appropriate ending, one died, one's banned, and two players just stopped posting. I'd reopen apps, but one of the main points is that there were seven champions, meaning the new players would have no powers. Plus, everyone that is currently playing is in the middle of a ghost town in the middle of a forest.

    dragonair500 -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/14/2011 23:37:48)

    If this is the new general chat, then can anyone help me answer this quesiton?

    Lets say somebody gave you a player created NPC who is powerful and the player likes him very much. You approve and then soon almost every update you do related ends up with a PM saying one of these:

    1. Its so unlike him! Its like he's a pansy.
    2. Don't nerf him.
    3. I worked so hard on him.

    If the person who I'm talking about see this, you know who you are. I'd like to hear other's opinions about this matter.

    Heroic Necro -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/15/2011 0:03:17)

    It'd probably be easier to just kill it and be done with it. It's causing nothing but conflict and seems to be being used as a tool for the player to take control of the game. The player, whoever he may be, is just going to have to deal with your decision. It will save a lot of future headaches and the game will be better off because of it

    kkutwar -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/15/2011 0:21:23)

    Okay... Can I just say this? I actually did mention various things to Dragonair that would limit the things he does. Like, say... The Hero vowing not to kill. The only major factors in what he does is people attacking him or endangering his loved one. Just don't get him involved in fighting, and viola: Little problem.

    Anyways... Nobody seemed to have a problem with the Superthreads, but... Steel Blade's set-up is okay yes? Because I feel like doing that myself sometime later.

    Dawn of Shadows -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/15/2011 0:28:44)

    1. He is NOT the player's character. Never let the player assume that. The only thing your player OWNS completely and controls is himself/herself. Get that thought out of your head and your own head out of that mud. Your game, your NPCs, your own PCs. The only thing your players have direct say in which you are not allowed to interfere is whether or not they want to play.

    2. Again, this NPC is NOT the player's character and it is NOT their decision. If you don't like their say on it, drop the topic, and if they continue to irritate you about it, drop bombs on them until they get it, or boot them if they really are going to continue without stop.

    3. So, you worked so hard on invading my game and intentionally writing into my game and trying to run my game... allow me to go back there, quote, and bold:

    quote:

    So, you worked so hard on invading my game and intentionally writing into my game and trying to run my game...

    Point: it is your game. If you're having difficulties, deal with them appropriately, whether this means nerfing or killing. Your choice.

    @Kkut, I'll take the liberty of assuming this is your NPC, the above completely applies. If you can see that this is clearly interfering too much with the mod, get your head out of the mud and stop badgering him about it.

    Bring it up with the mods if you have a question about superthreads; whatever keeps it clean I think is what Kose has to say on the matter. If you think you can deal with it better like that, feel free. ^^

    kkutwar -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/15/2011 0:37:25)

    Oh, Steel wanted some clarification anyways and his Superthread is different from Highlord's (Highlord just listed his current games, Steel Blade took it a step further). Just wanting to be extra sure.

    dragonair500 -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/15/2011 0:52:39)

    RIngdingding, DoS gets a cookie.

    Superemo -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/15/2011 1:15:06)

    The thing people need to get through their heads is the fact that, even if you give someone else a character to put in their game, they aren't using your character. The character is an original creation drawing inspiration from the idea for a character you submitted. As such, the GM has full rights to do whatever they want with that character.
    If you have a problem with it, feel free to use your exact character the way you want them used in your own game. Nobody, I repeat, nobody has any right to prevent a GM from having an NPC be what the GM feels they should be.
    Look at Ajenk, the villain I submitted for Wrath. My original concept for him was for him to be a captured Teru crossbowman turned Forsaken duelist, who was corrupted during the conversion process and rose through the ranks to become an extremely powerful enemy. Kose took my basic concept for him, changed a few minor details, and expanded upon him, making the villain several players ended up fighting. Is it the way I would have written him? No. Do I feel I have any say in the way he was used? No. It's Kose's game, and he's the one calling the shots with the NPCs. Is the character the original Ajenk I wrote? No. He's Kose's Ajenk, not mine. My Ajenk had no explicit ties to any of the other characters, no assigned last name for the Jek he once was, and only had three weaknesses: deflecting the fireballs, jamming the projectile gun, and getting the guns wet.

    The point I'm trying to make is that, no matter what you do, everything in a game created by a GM is the GM's creation, aside from the PCs. As such, the players have no say over what the NPCs do, aside from through in-character interaction with them.

    dragonair500 -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/15/2011 1:57:31)

    1. Supermo, if you're not a mod, what are you?
    2. Of all the says I've heard, YOURS WAS THE BEST. *hugs you*
    3. So, what do I do? Ignore the player's comments or try to comprimise(What I'm doing)?

    Heroic Necro -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/15/2011 2:15:33)

    He's saying that the NPC is just that. An NPC. You control him, not kkut, and don't let him say any diffrent

    dragonair500 -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/15/2011 3:38:48)

    So a player's rights when it comes to player made NPCs

    1. Can submit the NPC for GM's approval.
    2. Can tell the GM if the NPC isn't acting like he is supposed to be.

    A GM's rights when it comes to a Player made NPC are.
    1. Can choose to approve it or not.
    2. Can choose to nerf it or not.
    3. Can choose to edit to how the GM sees fit.
    4. Can kill it off at anytime.
    5. Has the overall control of the NPC.

    Is this list right?

    steel blade -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/15/2011 9:08:10)

    @^ - GM Right #5 may vary.

    I'm afraid to tell that Kingdom Hearts: Distant Legacy will be delayed this December due to game completion reasons. Most games died early and never finished their story and if KH: UCaG revealed the story of games instead, well, that didn't feel right to me. I would continue on building the game when at least 7 games were completed.

    Highlord Sendai -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/15/2011 9:11:35)

    @Steel Blade
    I will send the Snowball Fright story when it is completed, which is planned for Christmas.

    Arthur -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/15/2011 9:21:15)

    Guys, i guess i shall be taking my leave of the UCaG, my testing game which i intended to finish was not finished after all, but seeing as the critics liked it and maintained a hundred percent activity rate, i will return to finish the game that i started. Till then, adios my friends.
    Play well.

    steel blade -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/15/2011 9:29:07)

    With Arthur's leave, Spirit Dwellers will be delayed as well. :/
    In replacement, Dragon Nights and revivals will take place.

    Un67 -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (10/21/2011 16:57:06)

    Alright, I guess I'll say this now. I'll probably be taking my leave from the UCaG for a month if not several months, November is the National Novel Writing Month and I will be diverting most of my writing energy from here to there. After that, I'll still have to read over and edit it, which will still occupy a lot of my time. Still, better now when I have no games then another time when I do.

    Corruption_Vash -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (11/6/2011 5:41:45)

    I try to make my triumphant return to the UCaG, life throws me a curveball... by frying my laptop. I realize that this is the virtual world, a rather insignificant and secluded sub-forum no less if I want to be cynical, but still it bothers me to disappoint those of you that I (know I) have in regards to my unannounced and seemingly rude periods of leave. I don't have nearly as much time to offer, not even close to what I had when I took a go at my last return before my laptop got soaked in Coca-Cola, but I think I might try to participate some if no one minds that my activity is highly unstable due to the instabilities of my life... Heh... I've been through a lot within the past two years or so, give or take... like, a real-life adventure akin to the plots of the games here... just with... you know, less swords and more of social obstacles.

    Now, if I have to narrow down my main interests in the UCaG and therefore my reasons for wishing a return, I would say it's the little community I hold so dear and my desire for an outlet of brewing creativity. Contrary to my behavior, I do not leave because of disinterest in the UCaG nor for a round of super-trolling the UCaG. Hopefully I can get a game up and running... although it might be wise to incorporate a co-GM in the rather continually frequent event of my long-term absence. And, I've decided, no more joining games. Not one. I've done enough damage, I think, to quite a handful of GMs. Sorry 'bout that, guys.

    Zafnick -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (11/6/2011 15:58:28)

    Welcome back C_V!

    I would throw a party, but it's the internet.
    So it's not physically possible...

    Heroic Necro -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (11/24/2011 19:56:08)

    Oh, neat. That orange guy is back

    liamliam1234liam -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (11/24/2011 20:04:07)

    And only fifteen days after I was supposed to be! Thanks, Eukara!

    Probably not going to (re)make any games. Swimming and all. Also, my bans oddly seem to correlate with the creation of games.

    Heroic Necro -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (11/24/2011 20:05:03)

    I kept telling you to let me make the threads, but nooooooo...
