PROLOGUE
The sky was all black; an empty, starless expanse of night, as dark as tar, stretching as far as the eye could see. No stars twinkled, no moon shone. Looming houses of the neighborhood stood like the aftershadows of dawn, lurking in the darkness.

Blair slipped on her sleek black nylon gloves over her tan arms and pulled her bare feet into big black combat boots. She was being an "emo rocker". She had a short purple skirt, black-and-white striped leggings, a black belt with a skull for the buckle, a purple cropped jacket over a black-and-white striped shirt, and a swatch of dark eye shadow.

Halloween night was gonna be FUN.

CHAPTER ONE: CRIMSON BLOOD

Blair slammed the door, stalking out into the night. The chains on her combat boots clanked loudly as she set out from the house.

It was pitch black, with fog running down the streets and expanding through the sky. Blair marched through the neighborhood, stopping every so often at a rumbling car or an oblivious biker.

She jogged to meet up with her friends: Robyn, a pretty robin bird for the tenth year in a row; Zuri, a wizard, (as she actually is); and Jacob, a morbid zombie. Chatting as they went, they proceeded towards Adira's house, where supposedly they would meet her for her Halloween party.

The doorbell sang out for the thousandth time as Blair and her friends shuffled anxiously on Adira's front porch. Finally the door swung open, revealing... no one. Nothing was wrong with the scene before them--at first glance.

But crimson blood spattered the cream-painted walls. A plain white sheet sprawled the floor, red with blood. Upon further observation, they saw that someone must've made a ghost costume by cutting three holes out of a white sheet. Jacob bravely lifted it and shook it, but there was nothing inside.

Stepping into the house, the door swung shut behind them, and a familiar click could be heard as it locked. They exchanged nervous, wide-eyed glances.

Adira pranced into the room, dressed as a pretty sorcerer, in blue starry robes and a pointy hat.

"Welcome to my house," Adira greeted warmly. "Sorry about the blood in the hallway; it was just a little ploy to scare you. Haha, yeah, all a trick. After all, it is Halloween, night of fright."

Blair, Robyn, Zuri, and Jacob all relaxed their shoulders and waved.

"A morbid zombie, a realistic wizard, a robin--for the tenth time--and an emo rocker." Adira remarked with approval. "Nice costumes."

Zuri smiled shyly and Jacob adopted a proud grin. Robyn called upon her usual cheerful expression while Blair kept her normal straight face.

Adira continued grinning excitedly for several minutes, causing the other teens to glance around awkwardly to see where she was staring. All the while, Adira had been secretly sneaking something mysterious from her pocket...

BAM!

Blood clouded Blair's vision as she crumpled to the floor, unconcious.

CHAPTER TWO: PRISONERS

Blair felt dizzy, like someone was shaking her out of this mysterious sleep...

She yearned to stay asleep; it seemed her destiny, she was addicted to this lovable nap. She wished for it to go on and on, for ever and ever...

But this was not so.

Woozy as she was, she finally gained conciousness.

Everything was blurry at first. Her friends were a foggy mess, her location distorted around her. But as she grew out of her strange slumber, she noticed her friends were locked in chains, hand-cuffed to bleak gray walls. She was also locked in hand-cuffs, which had been driven into the dented, cool metal floors.

"We've gotta get out of here!" Blair screeched.

"No kidding," Zuri muttered.

The barred door to their jail cell was padlocked from the outside. There weren't any windows or trap doors in the cramped prison, promising that they'd be in there for a long time.

But there was food and water.

Blair tugged on her chains. They pulled loose from the ground. She raced over to the nourishment and gulped down a bite of chicken and a swig of what looked like red Kool-Aid.

And passed out again.

CHAPTER THREE: PROBLEM AND SOLUTION

As Blair finally came-to again, she realized Jacob had come loose from his chains too. His zombified grin creeped me out, but he finally got serious.

"Blair, we have to do something." He stated.

"Well of course we have to do something!" Blair snorted.

"First of all..." Jacob began, turning to the others. He gestured to the chicken and Kool-Aid. "Do not eat that. It has been poisoned with something that makes you pass out and lessens your strength. Zuri, especially. We need your magic."

"We realize that, after what happened to Blair." Zuri remarked with a chuckle.

"How are we gonna get out though?" Robyn whimpered.

"Of course!" Zuri motivated. "I can probably somehow levitate the keys or unlock the door with my powers."

"You better," Robyn murmured quietly.

"I have a laser watch, being a spy and all." Jacob boasted, slipping it out of his pocket and onto his wrist. Heat wavered through the room as the laser shot at Zuri's hand-cuffs. They broke open.

"I'M FREEEEEE!!!!!!" she shouted in triumph.

"Shh!" Blair hissed. "Not so loud. Adira or someone could hear us and hand-cuff us permanantly."

"And what about me?" Robyn mewed.

Jacob burned off her chains.

"Yay!"

"Hey Jacob," Blair called.

"Yeah?"

"Since when are you a spy?"

CHAPTER FOUR: ESCAPE

"Couldn't you just laser the lock?" Blair offered.

"Well yeah...but that, like, loses its effect." Jacob tried, face growing scarlet.

"Pfft! I think you're just really stupid,"

"You didn't realize this earlier?" Zuri asked, rolling her eyes.

"Well, what are we waitin' for?!" Blair cried.

Jacob's face resumed its pale color as he zapped the lock. Heat emanated from it, sizzling as the metal melted and heaped onto the floor.

With a loud crack the lock clattered to the floor. Robyn leaped up and darted for the barred door, swinging it open and bolting out.

"She was in a hurry to get out," Jacob remarked with a gruff laugh.

"No kidding," Zuri agreed.

Shrugging, they ambled out into the hallway cautiously. Guards were posted at both exits.

"Prepare for a fight," Blair proclaimed grimly. She yanked the chains off of her boots and swung them dangerously. Zuri slipped her wand from her brown leather boots. Jacob readied his laser watch.

"You need more than that," Zuri informed Jacob. With a burst of energy, she conjured up a mace with her magic wand and handed it to Jacob.

"Wicked!" he exclaimed, swinging it easily.

CHAPTER FIVE: FIGHTING CYCLOPS PRISON GUARDS

They split up-- Blair and Zuri, Jacob and Robyn--to different sides of the hallway.

In case you're wondering, Robyn turned back when she discovered the guards. Her weapon was a dagger Zuri magically created for her.

Each side closed in on their target, weapon at ready. Blair whipped at the guard with her chains. He spun around furiously. Blair and Zuri stopped dead.

He had a normal olive complexion. He was thick with muscles under his black guard uniform, reading SECURITY on the back. His dull brown hair was scraggly and hanging over his face, covering the one big eye right in the middle of it.

The Cyclops was upon them in seconds, grasping Zuri by her shirt and shoving his pistol at her throat.

"No!" Blair shrieked, swatting at him with her heavy weapon.

The one-eyed prison guard almost pulled the trigger.

****

Jacob was sneaking up behind the other prison guard, mace at ready. Unfortunately, the Cyclops whirled around, obviously fed up with Robyn's discraction. Jacob managed to tear his security uniform and scrape his dark skin.

Furious, the Cyclops snarled and shoved Jacob. He flew across the hall and crashed into a hard wall, denting it.

Robyn rushed to Jacob's assistance. He was unconcious. Of course, she panicked and fainted.

Robyn was heavy, therefore when she fell the floor shook. Cyclopes hands are already shaky, so when the Cyclops pulled the trigger because of the momentum....

CHAPTER SIX: ARGUS KING AND THE POSSIBLE DEATH OF HIS SISTER

It was fatal to Zuri.

Blood spurted from her throat. She gagged and slumped to the floor. Blair went wide-eyed. All her friends, gone just like that. Shaking Jacob worriedly, she reflected about what just happened. It had all happened so fast! With an aching moan, Jacob finally awoke.

"Wh-what happened?" he asked painfully.

"Robyn panicked and fainted and Zuri has a bullet in her throat." Blair stated as if it was no big deal.

Jacob hastily splashed Robyn with buckets of water until she woke up.

"Wh-" Robyn began.

"Zuri has a bullet stuck in her throat and you panicked and fainted when Jacob got slammed into a wall." Blair interrupted.

"Well what do we do?!" Robyn cried.

"Call Argus King," Jacob replied.

Blair and Robyn stared at him.

"Zuri's brother, a famous wizard." Jacob replied, pulling out his cell phone and punching in a number. "Zuri is in trouble. Yeah. Mhm. Ok. Bye."

The scene blurred as a portal opened and a boy version of Zuri joined them.

"Greetings. I am Argus King. What's wrong with Zuri?" The boy greeted.

"She's got a bullet in her throat." Blair reflected.

Argus glanced over at Zuri. "Magic has limits." He told them. "Zuri is on the verge of death. If I heal her, I will use up all my energy and I will die myself. Zuri could heal herself to the point where she surely will not die, but even that might use up her energy to the point where she is in a coma for over a week."

Robyn gazed into Argus' murky brown eyes, her diamond blue eyes bubbling with worry and sorrow. "We can't lose her!" She croaked, kneeling beside Zuri. Tears streamed down her cheek until she was bawling into Zuri's wizard robes. Jacob knelt next to Robyn and wiped away her tears, brushing Robyn's bangs out of the way.

"It'll be alright, Robyn." Jacob comforted.

Blair was taking out her cell phone and punching in "911" when Argus stopped her. "Mortals cannot help wizards," Argus explained. "She must heal herself."

Blair's expression turned somber as she sat next to Zuri, whose pained expression made even Blair burst in tears. In a few moments it spread contagiously and Jacob was sobbing and a tear trickled down Argus' cheek.

All of the sudden, the bullet popped right out of Zuri's wound and bonked Robyn in the head. "Owww!"

Blood gushed from the deep wound that cut into Zuri's throat. But Argus smiled. Zuri might live.
