Answer - Nope, never would have known the game existed without AE.

AE provided things for ED that they would have crashed and burned without. I wasn't there in alpha, but from what I know, the game wasn't exactly booming.
They added many things from their style (AE) into the game. Perhaps these were not welcomed by us who played in the earlier stages (Beta, early Gamma),
however ED's addition to the AE family has proved good for both the game itself and AE. AE has more customers, ED has more players. It's all good right?
Wrong.

These changes were not welcomed. We, being accustomed to the original ways of the game, have been thrown out of our comfort zone
for what is supposed to be the greater good of the community. Although some of these changes welcomed new players, us, the larger portion, remained angry.
Maybe it is for the best. It's too early to tell.

ED is changing. It's growing, becoming compatible with more people from all over the globe. The game will continue to expand in this way because it's what
the team envisions will improve the game for all of us. Are they right to do so? Maybe not. Even so, these changes are already in place, and the way I see it, we
have the choice of either leaving ED or sticking with it the whole way through. I understand some of us (those who have payed 150+ on the game) are very
angry, but we don't know what'll happen. I for one am content with where the game is going. We have some...issues to attend to, that's true, but hopefully we'll learn
from our mistakes. It's going to be a long road ahead, but hopefully, we can get it right.

I wouldn't have known ED existed were it not for AE.

@Andy Just wanted to point two important things out to you.
1. Heal loop was balanced compared to what builds were like in Alpha. BHs had a skill that increased their primary damage every turn for free, Mercs could invest in tech and get better resistance and defense because the Alpha version of Hybrid improved with tech, and mages were godlike. If they made it to the end of their SC warm up then you could kiss 150+ life goodbye. Never before has energy ever been that OPd as a stat.
2. Playing a few days before the merge does not prove anything. ED didn't go "downhill" within days of merging. Any popular and well populated game will eventually get worse over time. Even more so if it's PvP since competition tends to bring out the ugly in people.

Edit @above: You do realize that most of Beta ED was merged with AE right? If you joined in Beta chances are you probably joined ED after the merge. If you're blaming AE for the problems when you joined after the merge then you're blaming yourself.

@SOUP: I lagged crazily on a dual-core i5 2.3 GHz, 4GB RAM, Os X Lion. Right after Beast Rider came out. It's a pretty new MacBook Peo 13 inch

And I can barely play on my Motorola Xoom, 1 GB RAM, 1.0 GHz. Lag's fine, but I prefer not DCing every fight.
