You awaken to the crashing of waves and a bitter, almost paralyzing cold. As you come to your senses, you realize just what a predicament you seem to have gotten yourself into. You are sting down atop a small black stone platform, jutting out of a roaring , crashing ocean. The air is bitter and cold, and the water is colder still. The sea seems to stretch out forever, and their only sound is the roaring of the waves. The smell of salt hits your nose next, pungent, jolting you fully back into the waking world. In front of you is a small wicker basket, containing basic scuba diving equipment. Your companions from the theatre are sitting upon similar stones, arranged in a sort of parabola, and atop a large spire of rock stand the Ringmaster and Lady Zafara. She is obviously drugged, and sways ominously atop the precarious perch. The ringmaster pulls a long ceremonial dagger from his coat pocket and slits her wrists, creating a series of small runic signs.
“Welcome to the Bering Strait, gentlemen. You are currently 33 kilometers away from land. No communication devices will function. Before you is a scuba-diving suit. I would suggest that you put it on now. The final act is simple. A vanishing act. Your goal will be to locate Lady Zafara and return her to the theatre, which is 3,750 kilometers away from the shore. You may not call for assistance. I would advice you to find her quickly, before she dies from blood loss, or is located by a hungry shark. Or worse. This part of the strait is as of yet mostly unexplored. It contains creatures far more ancient than either you or I can imagine. They are certainly hungry. I would advise you against utilizing any of your powers as well. In the sea, those sorts of things have a habit of attracting creatures that should best be left alone.”
The Ringmaster rips the electrodes from Zafara’s head and hurls her off into the distance. The runes prevent her from sinking, but he is much stronger than he looks. She sails past the vast labyrinth of rock and stone and lands out in the open ocean. The waves crash up against the rocks and you remember exactly where you are. The stones that you are standing upon quake, and something whispers from the depths of the abyss. The sound howls through the bones of the earth.
“Save her. Come back. Find me. Simple.”
The sea is deep, all-knowing, all-seeing. It slams against your stone pedestal, nearly knocking into the bottomless abyss.
“Begin.”
