The Miner's Torment

The miner lifted his pickaxe once again, swinging with all his might at the Delta Vault’s seemingly impenetrable door. Chunks of shrapnel flew everywhere as he chipped away slowly at the surface of the vault, only stopping to dodge the stalactites that would occasionally break off and fall to the ground with a resounding crash.

Cursing as he leaped aside from the rocky spire that nearly crushed him; the miner prepared to raise his pick once more. As the tool swung high, a tide of soldiers rushed him from a side, sending him tumbling into the fray. Shrieks of pain accompanied the incessant rattling of gunfire in the mines as the soldiers began battling with the metal insects that guarded the chamber.

Another contingent of warriors charged into the fray, sending a wave of bullets into the cavernous mines. The miner snatched his tool from the gravel and prepared to chip at the door once again when he caught sight of a Mechachillid coming his way.

“Not again,” the miner groaned.

Pick against claw, drill against incisors, the miner began to ward off the malevolent drone. The battle dragged on as the Mechachillid drove onwards, sending him further and further back from the vault. Across the ruins of broken Vault doors they fought, until the insectoid was demolished by a heavy blow across the abdomen. As he picked himself up, a dark shadow fell over him.

“Well, have you gotten me that pretty rock yet?”

The miner swore as he saw the Lawman’s daughter casting the shadow over him. “No? Well, get back in there!” Ignoring the miner’s shout of protest, she dragged him bodily to the entrance of the Delta Vault’s final door and shoved him in.

The miner picked himself off the dusty floor and glared at Selina, who began to wave cheerily at him. Muttering terrible oaths of retribution under his breath, the miner trudged on.

“And don’t forget, it’s the shiny ones I want!”

“ARGH!”
