Arthur -> It's All About Titles~(Story & Chapter Titles) (1/12/2013 14:23:55)

Hey there,

Here's another one from me. So this thread is all about titles.

I will admit that nothing pesters me more than having to name my Story/Poem and it's Chapters. Somehow, the word "Badass" automatically pops into my head and often leads to me inventing some pretty stupid and childish titles.

So how do you name your stories and the chapters within? What's the whackiest title you came up with? What sounds the most Epic? What do you focus on when naming your work?

Discuss everything about titles here.^^
DiscussiOn..!

You find the essence of a story or a chapter. That is why I can name chapters and I haven't written yet and have to read through others again once I have written them.

I love to name chapters/stories, it gives it a life IMO. With stories I have a theme: its a play on my name (Shadow). With chapters, normally I get to the end then decide 'what stands out the most?' and use it for a title. ]
Honestly, none of mine are wacky or epic... cliche may be the closest! My favorite though is probably: Night of Darkness, River of Blood.

I think titles are what an average reader usually catches their eye on. If the title sounds interesting, their curiosity is sparked and suddenly, they get the thought "I must read that!"
One example was when I first saw the book "Leviathan". That title just hit me somehow. I just thought "I have to read that!". Sadly, I never did and I don't think I will but one day....just one day.....

When I write a story, I always leave the title until the end. In my opinion, the title is a couple of words to summarize the entire story, or to show a hidden meaning. Sometimes, it's great writing a story and they read through the whole story, before looking at the title again and thinking "Oh!!!! I get it now!"

I second this. But the 'don't judge a book by it's cover' still applies. I've read many stories with relatively bland titles but have had interesting and engaging storylines.

Still, I think the title is what gives flavor to any story. I like it when titles are often vague and cryptic but actually give hints to the plot of the story, rather than just being straightforward about it. My story 'Hounds of God', for example is a term referred to the Holy Inquisition in medieval Germany. However, my main preference when it came to titles is to add some philosophical flare to it and I'm sure Arthur has already noticed my borrowing of certain Buddhist and Shinto verses and phrases.

As has rightly been portrayed in VanHo MortAurus as well.

You can call me a guy who'll just read titles like "The Gathering Storm" and get bored. Something like Edge Chronicles gets me excited. I mean, the name should click, right?

But then again, my elder brother enjoys reading Silmarillion, Children of Hurin, uh.... The Gathering Storm. He has much, much more knowledge in those lines than me probably because I don't read that many books anymore.

I am surprised how I managed to read Salvatore's Road of the Patriarch when that name has nothing. But it was a mindblowing book. Same goes for Clockwork Angel, a side-series to The Infernal Devices.

Some of my titles include Woe of The Seeker, Fate's Fallacy, Chronicles of Calibur, The Black Chevalier, GunXBlade and a few A&Rs like Chaos Chronicles: Spiritfall, Regaliours etc.

Kaho must know my mangas Wrath Eater, Glass/Steel etc.

I am all about catchy names.

I can't name anything until I have written it. The only story that I ever started with a name already in place was "Putting Barbie to Bed." But that is because that is essential to the story.

Titles are one of my biggest weaknesses. It aggravates me to no end that I cannot just name something.

^^
You just summed up most of my years of story writing in a couple of sentences. I've tried several times to name a title before and it ended with disastrous results.

Although I do remember when I typed the title "VNA" (Very naughty ant). A very, very jumbled story I wrote 5 years ago. Basically, it was just moving constantly from one location to another, the only plot being a gardener who is constantly being bullied by a supernatural ant. Just reading it again made me chuckle.
