PROLOGUE

Ever since the acceptance of my application into the order of the elite dark slayers, I have risen through the ranks at a faster rate than most surviving members of the order. This is partly due to the fact
that the entrance rate for it is about 0.5% of the applicants and people only get promoted rarely, when they are deemed worthy of it. I have served faithfully since nearly the beginning and am now an elite
dark lieutenant, specialising in reconnaissance and combat missions. My current mission is to reconstruct the history, traditions, and battle tactics of the clan of the claw, beyond the oblivion gate.

Day 1

I traversed the land of rising darkness (lore) from a relatively unknown land known to its inhabitants as the kingdom of loathing (kol). As my shaking fingers write this for posterity, I stand before the Oblivion Gate, clad in my black leather trench coat and hat, concealing my blade. I sincerely hope I will not need to use it as such was not my mission. Wallet with gold. Check. Enchanted pocket watch which always shows the correct time, whichever time zone I am in. Check. Potion of permanent invisibility. Check. Potion of debuffing to counter the potion of permanent invisibility. Check. Peanuts to help with portal sickness. Check. Crossbow. Dang! I knew I forgot something! I can't get it now though. I have got everything I should need, barring the crossbow. Geronimo! I launch myself at the portal, opening my packet of peanuts as I run...

.... I gagged shoving peanuts into my mouth to counter the portal sickness. Its kinda like being hungover in that way. Time to look for this clan which everyone has overlooked before now.

Day 2

I have found a small settlement of the clan in the forest just outside the main town of oversoul, solace.

In solace, I took a detour to the library, too check out what people already know about this elusive clan. It turned out that there were few references to the clan, let alone actual knowledge of their practices. At least this log book will be the first of its kind. I had to find a way to infiltrate the camp of these people without them noticing me as an outsider, not part of their clan. They have been known to kill trespassers on sight, I have been warned by the villagers. So I visited the barber shop and got my hair done EXACTLY like all the 20 year olds in the clan. Then I went to the tailor to get the correct clothing and furs. At the end of it, I looked like the typical male member of the clan of the claw. In other words, I looked terrible to my vain eyes. At least I knew that they came of age at 18 and were sent to wander in the forest until they came across another settlement of the clan, so I had an excuse to arrive without warning. That was a start, at least.

Day 3

If you ever wish to visit solace, I highly recommend the sleepy wolf inn as a place to stay or the night. Despite the over-sized dog that the inn is named after it (almost) never eats the paying guests. As I write this, I am a ghost (I think) I did some research and it appears I am a type of ghost which somehow absorbs the essence of defeated or dying people as long as rot has not set in or parts of it eaten by something and has the ability to change at will, retaining all the memories and skills of the possessed body. This is called an oversoul. This is all I could find about my condition in the library of solace. Now that I look around me carefully, I realise that most of the adventurers that mill around solace's main street fighting random monsters and duelling each other have my condition. When I ask them how they became oversouls, it always seems to occur when somebody fails at absorbing their souls soon after defeat. It appears to strengthen the soul, giving it life without flesh until a host is found, after which it can somehow switch between bodies at will. I suppose you, as a reader, are curious as to how I became an oversoul. Well, I was tossing the disguise around in the forest near solace to make it suitably dirty for the "wandering in the forest" excuse when I got stabbed in the back by a void wearing red armour, with blades sprouting from the armour covering it triceps. It tried to absorb my soul, but was apparently inexperienced at the technique, and failed. It got shot in the back by an adventurer who had taken the form of a lei crossbows. As the void lay dying, I grabbed it by the head saying, a little childishly, "not so tough are you now?" Almost as soon as I touched it, I was magnetically pulled into its body somehow, reanimating it and healing its wounds. Amazed at this fact, I possessed my old body, which had not been disturbed yet. Hey! I've just had a brainwave! I could possess a member of the clan of the claw and pretend I as him/her! Provided I can kill one, of course.

Day 4 Part 1

Time to find and defeat a clan of the claw member. I think I'll shorten clan of the claw into CotC if that's alright with whoever wants to read this thing. But first, I have to be strong enough to defeat it! With my pile of gold, I bought a void incarnate from Malakai and levelled it into a flesh void with the help of a fellow adventurer. I'm going to muck around in the dangerous undead dungeo now to try for a person known as necrosis dezgardo who is, according to many, very good at combat! This is Juthnix, signing out for a couple of hours till I possess someone awesome!

Day 4 part 2

Degore did NOT know what hit him! I chopped his head off with my axe and captured his master, necrosis dezgardo in one try! It was a tough fight though, so I was lucky to survive against necrosis. I possessed him and now I can speak telepathically and can sense things by their unique imprint on the multiverse. To a point, I can sense the near future vaguely, allowing me to counter when attacked.

. I have successfully defeated and possessed an elder of the CotC, and have all his memories. What follows in this log book is what I have found. Mission complete.

Male children of the CotC, upon reaching the age of 5, have a tough life. They are separated from their parents to remove any emotion that would soften their killing instinct and are put into rigorous combat training, battle strategy, and the lore of the clan, achieving the dangerous combination of ruthlessness, strength, cunning, and superstition. After 5 years of training, at the age of ten, they are tried in combat against each other to the death, unless the opponent yields, in tournaments. They are allowed to do anything at all to win, and if they yield, they are severely punished. The top 50 highly respected. Afterwards, they sit a series of tests on their knowledge of the clan and the outside world. The results of these tests affect their lives from then on. The ones who excel in the written tests become elders of the clan, to pass their knowledge on to the younger generation. The top 50 in combat become warriors or hunters. The few who do well in both these tests become the druids of the claw. The druids train for 8 more years, till their coming of age at 18. Then they are released into the forest to wander until they find a werewolf to bite them. They are then turned into the elite part of the clans warriors, the lycans. After a few years, the lycan virus fully matures and they turn into full werewolves.

I'm stuck here, apparently. I had stood before the oblivion gate and jumped through, but something went wrong. As I jumped, the words "error, oversoul equivalent unfound" flashed in my brain in a variant of ultrablack. Yes, that's a colour. I was spat out onto the oversoul side of the gate several meters, landing in front of the door to a mansion which I was sure was not there three seconds ago. Luckily, my cloak has been enchanted with a spell of shock absorption. A large LED sign on the door read "Welcome, Juthnix, you are expected." As I finished reading it, the doors swung open.

THE END....of book one.

This has been dedicated to three groups of people: DarkLore, who supported me in writing this right from the start, the rest of the OS forumites, whom I am sure most will not read this, and you, as a person who was willing to finish this story. If you, DarkLore, are reading this, then congratulations, you belong to all three groups!

The following narrative will have a different style of writing, and is the brainchild of many hours of hard work and research. That said, constructive criticism is still welcome from whomever should read this. Above all, try and enjoy the hours I spend writing a single chapter of this work, for free. Or, should I say, FOR OVERSOUL!

PROLOGUE

These are a few of the memories of that reknowned archiver, hero, and researcher of old. Should you wish to relive his experiences, press the big red button and you will see what became of him through his eyes.

OK, you. Before you will understand the tale I will tell you, you will need to have knowledge of all the creatures I have ever encountered. Just for fun, I'll go in alphabetical order. It will seem like an age, but if the device I have placed in the town hall is working properly, the download of information from the telepathic interface should only take about five seconds. If you're sure your mind will not explode, the let us begin. As the good doctor says, "Allons-y!".

Disclaimer: If the descriptions of some characters do not fit the backstories set them by the gods *coughplayersetc.coughcough*, this is an original work. Do remember that as you read the next hundred chapters or so.

Disclaimer about the disclaimer: This is totally in NO way breaking the fourth wall, right? Just agree with me, the fantasy breaker police are hunting me down and I want you guys to speak up for me in court and say I did NOT break the fourth wall. Please? I don't want to be transmuted into one of the four-bellied phlinchmoks of Sacratilius IV. Yes, that's a real place, and no, you do not want to go there. And no, I'm not supposed to be talking to you, I'm supposed to be running. Don't ask me how the telepathic interface knows what I'm doing now, it's telepathic.
