People can buy the rights to oversoul at any point in time, but copyright, according to US law states, if I remember correctly, that the work will be protected by copyright until 70 years after the death of the author. While this applies to texts, I'm fairly sure it's under the same, or a similar copyright act. I think your confusion stems from the idea that copyright mean "nobody except the owner can use the work until the copyright is over, when it actually means something more like "nobody can use this work WITHOUT THE OWNER'S PERMISSION until the copyright is over". Now, being neither a US citizen Nor a lawyer I may have gotten some of this wrong, but I'm fairly certain I conveyed the gist of it to you accurately. Basically, someone else can buy the franchise at any time, should AE choose to sell it, but it can be taken without AE's consent after a certain time period has elapsed (I'm not certain after who's death the 70 year time limit falls under, whether it be Milton, Artix or the metaphorical death of AE, that is, ifthe company declares bankruptcy) Anyway, unless AE sells the game to another company or person, it's unlikely the game will change hands. That answer your question?
