Pretty self explanatory.

We need more testers who know the game and can whip up new builds that could be overpowered with the new planned balance changes and just know how to play the game in general, also knowing how to use more than one build is helpful when it comes to balance.

8x -> RE: More Testers (8/14/2018 19:23:08)

At this point, with so few players, you are all testers. NW rolls out a balance patch, you do your thing for a week, then he adjusts it by looking at the statistics.
They could have 20 testers on the dev server, testing out the new balance changes beforehand and it would probably make no difference.

I wonder if it would be possible to open one of the servers as a "test server", where everyone who logs in gets a max level character (whatever is done to that character in not transferred to the live game). And there is a shop with all cores. Then, anyone who wishes to, could test the new changes and give opinion on the forum. If I had to make predictions though, a server like that would probably be empty most of the time...

A tester helps during the changes, not after. We need to make things like supercharge not OP before the update rolls out then have to fix it days later.

Testers need to test the changes before they go live, so nothing that breaks balance happens. We'd get a whole lot more done with our updates than just changing a few things every week to make certain builds not OP.

We could get missions, quicker way to bring back influence for all PvP battles, quicker way to get passives back into the game.

It'd be nice to test the things NW wants to do before the updates go live and we could provide feedback. Making a complete testing server with feedback when some people have no idea what they're doing can be a disaster.

With 20 testers online, Supercharge wouldn't have happened, and neither would have firebolt, or smoke, or malf, or plasma bolt, or massacre.

If we want balance to happen more productively and successfully, this should happen and soon.

I do 100% support this.
@8x No, at this point making bad decisions might end up causing people to quit and thus ED would lose a huge amount of players.
Testers aren’t paid and thus I don’t think there’s a need to worry about hiring new testers.
A tester should be aware of the game and how skills work and how everything works in general. Testers should be 18+ with any proof of them being smart. They should have passed high school with a GPA (American System) of at least 3.0, 85%+ Indian/Asian System or 90%+ internationally. Or, if they couldn’t get these grades during high school, they should submit an essay of 400 words describing why they should become testers.
Applicants shouldn’t have broken any of ED’s rules for at least the last 1 year and shouldn’t have been muted for the last 3 months at least.

8x -> RE: More Testers (8/18/2018 8:27:41)

^Look around mate. ED has already lost huge amounts of players. The only people still around are the extremely loyal and dedicated ED players who will never quit, no matter what devs do.

Testers need just about the same qualifications as mods. Lets be generous and say that ED has 1000 active players. And lets say, one of a hundred players is actually qualified to be a mod/tester. So, out of those 1000 active players, you get about 10 candidates for testers.

Just because someone is good at ED, doesn't mean they would make a good tester. Also, we might as well start calling them Balancers, since that's what you guys want them to do.

Mother1 -> RE: More Testers (8/18/2018 16:39:35)

Here is a better idea. ED needs an actually 100% qualified person/people who's soul purpose is to balance the game. Said person/people also need to be able to have the power to veto suggestions/ idea's that would also wreak the balance of the game.

For example had we had an actual balance tester back in the older phases things like the first infernal android for example (for those who remember) would have never made it into the game as it would have been stomped flat and vetoed.

So while I do support more testers who are "ACTUALLY QUALIFIED" I would rather see someone or some people put into the staff as Admins who are qualified to balance the game and stop overpowered and gamebreaking things from ever leaving the drawing board let alone put into the game.

Optimise -> RE: More Testers (8/18/2018 17:39:02)

Testers are testers -- they only test new content to see whether they work. What's being suggested here is an (re)introduction of a balance team, which is pretty much non-existent at the moment.

I think there was a balance team lead by Rabblefroth and Mecha Mario. But at this time, every staff is free to suggest balance changes. As of late, developers have evidently been monitoring the forums for balance suggestions in response to their updates -- so as 8x said we're all pretty much "testers".

If memory serves me right, "balancers" are given access to two different features -- the balance tool and balance tracker. The balance tool wasn't finished properly due to whatever reason and is seemingly also extremely difficult to learn - therefore it isn't used anymore. The balance tracker provides data reports, allowing them to see what's being used the most, etc.

Not everyone is capable of testing/composing balance ideas, regardless of how good they may be at doing other things such as writing, art, catching bugs, etc. That being said, I would like to see a team dedicated to balance -- not to just test balance changes before release but also be allowed to experiment with numbers on the test server and formulate balance ideas, with the help of a finished "balance tool".

To me it seems like the recent balance changes weren't well thought out or are being solely implemented from the recent suggestions made on the forums (which may or may not be great). If balance implementations aren't well-planned or thought through, then they'll spend more time fixing it later. The developers should and probably do know that.

Battle Elf -> RE: More Testers (8/19/2018 11:05:59)

Ideally we'd have a balance dev like Mother1 mentioned but with the amount of resources ED has been allocated, this isn't going to be possible. Given the sizes of recent releases, we might need to spend more time playing around with balance before a release goes live, but I'm not sure it makes sense to expand our testing team at this point (the more time NW spends on paperwork/training the less development ED will get).
