So in my first week of returning to DF, it seems that many things are quieter than I remember. There doesn't appear to be near the engagement on the forums as I recall, or the similar updates on Fridays (unless I'm mistaken). Has there been a dip in the playerbase recently?

Most of the players use now discord, but the updates happen still regularly. But, now we have a planned schedule:

Month's first friday: Inn at the Edge of Time update

Second Friday: Side quest release (variets from Six Heroes Saga to True Mortal) or Storybook release (still on february/march/october/november/december)

Third friday: Usually main story release. This and second friday can switch places.

Fourth/last (if there are five fridays on month): Reimagined release. Currently Dove and Verly are working on Book 3 being rewritten at the beginning.

Good to know it's still active! How does Discord work/how do I access it?

Its an online chat platform like skype or whatever except far more designed for and accommodating of large groups. You can either download the application for it on phone or pc or use it in web browser. Idk if its ok to post the link here so just search it on google and its the first thing that'll come up. There's an official Artix entertainment server and also Falconsnest which is exclusively for df, it is not official but is the one most people use.

I'd like to think Falcon's Nest is official, considering Dove, Verlyrus and just about everyone of importance is on there as well

It's not an official server by any means, or else you'd be allowed to post the link in regular posts; it's a fan-made server, but yes, Dove and Verlyrus are occasionally active and interact with the players there. For anyone that needs a link, you can find it in my signature.
