Wow, shows how long it has been since I have properly posted on the forums, have the removed the quote button in posts?

Verly wasn't kidding in the design notes when he said this war required teamwork and communication, huh? I agree with Alpha too, it's nice to have a really unique way of getting the community to work together. Glad to see some new faces on the forums too! Welcome! :)

Yes, I was thinking that too. When I first read it it intrigued me, since I was wondering how he could do that in a war, then when I started the war I just thought that was no difference than other wars in the community having a war thread, cheering each other on and working as a team to beat the war, but when I saw the puzzle I realised what he meant and was really happy, especially at such a clever binary puzzle.

For your second part, not just new faces but also some old, rare faces as well [;)].

Kind of a random question, but considering who we're doing this quest for, I should ask now: has anyone managed to play Lock and Key's leitmotif backwards? It sounds familiar.

NEOCROM -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 0:09:58)

At the number of players and lack of motivation in the game, maybe the staff should reconsider when implementing this type of wars, and with annoying puzzle, and i bet it will not be the last. Compared to what was in the past, when you reached 100% in less than a week, this is pretty sad at this moment. It would be a better idea to just focus with normal quests, less filler events, and focus with chapter 3 storyline more.

Verlyrus -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 1:00:30)

A couple of things I want to address-

First of all, this war was proceeding slowly for a variety of reasons from the very start. It is also intended to be a two week war, compared to a war that completes in one week that is intended to be completed in one week.

Second, we're trying something new. Obviously that doesn't always go well, but the great thing about this being an online game is that we can learn, adapt, and make changes as needed.

For example, this war has no visible unlockables. Percent unlockables are a huge incentive and mini goal for the community. However, by having them hidden in this war, it's demotivating to just see plain war waves for the rest of the war.
Obviously, given the 20% quest, there are unlockables to come, but we need to and will adjust things in the following days. I will say, the next unlock is at 50%.

Was the puzzle too hard? Perhaps. However, it was intended to have players work together to figure things out. Maybe it was too difficult to start things off with. It was something different that we tried and we learned from it.

Third, this isn't a filler event.

Finally, there's been a lot of good feedback, and we're always looking to improve. This is some old, old tech and gamestyle. Some things we change for the better, but much is still a remnant of the past. There's a lot that we would like to try, as we have here. But these changes take time, and we ask that you please be understanding when some things either don't hit the mark at first, or are just outright not good. That doesn't mean to stop giving feedback, both good and bad. Without feedback, it can be difficult to judge what works and what doesn't.

None of this should be taken as excuses- this war clearly isn't doing as well as any of us would have hoped.

But, I sincerely believe that as it progresses, it will be very satisfying for most players. There's still a lot left to uncover.

@NEOCROM - it's worth noting that the wars where we reached 100% in less than a week had between 2-4 million waves - this one is 7 million, so it was likely intended to be a two week war! Wars may not be your thing, and that's ok! But they do bring a number of the community together and have been a DF tradition since the beginning - and personally I enjoy the fun changes/mechanics they've introduced into the newer wars like with rare waves, new types of waves, and puzzles.

Also a huge congratulations to everyone for keeping such a steady pace this war! We may not have had a lot of soaring speeds, but we've remained strongly in the triple digits - something that's often hard to do when we don't have catapults available. Let's keep up the good work, we're nearly to the next milestone. Battle On!

Edit: Milestone bumped up to 50%, per Verly's comments above!

ChronoEye -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 1:43:58)

@Verlyrus: That comment was so happy to read. Don't worry, you guys are still pleasing us as a community, and hey, even if this war lasts longer, it actually is a good thing; life might be rough right now across the world, but having a war in DragonFable helps us spend that time we have for ourselves.

You guys do an amazing job nonetheless, and we are happy to be allowed to share how we feel. And hearing that adjustments are coming (like this far already has with the monster health), we also actually feel nice, I personally do.

I do not mind at all even if this would be a 2-3 week long war; we got one, and that's already something - no matter what you do, you cannot fail in making an amazing DragonFable War event. This is my whole core in the game that I love; and I love to see how you guys are improving on them. And I love to be part of it as a player, personally.

I want to say (at least) in my behalf two specific words - thank you! :)

Flabagast -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 4:35:39)

There is a lack of motivation in this war, that much is evident. As Verly has said though, there are a few reasons why the progress has been a little sluggish.

I think one of them is that the stakes are quite different. Rather than saving a town from invasion or a lovable NPC from danger, we find ourselves crawling through the interior of a being we know very little about, in exchange for answers to some questions that only a portion of the community have been discussing and pondering over the last year or so.

I will admit that I personally haven't contributed as much as I normally would have to this war, despite being quite invested in the mystery surrounding Lock and Key. A lot of the incentive for this war is based in intrigue, which is certainly motivating in it's own way, but I can very well understand that it isn't enough to rally the community together like wars have done in the past.

That said, I'm still very glad we got this war and I'm really looking forward to seeing how this part of the plot will play out, and potential repercussions it might have later on.

@aceflashwater A Bracer for Defender Medals eh? Not a bad idea. Maybe in the future when Bracers become a little more common.

anime_rpg -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 7:27:23)

Verly, there will always be people complaining unfortunately. I love the puzzles in this war, has temporarily pulled me back to the forums and got me invested a little more in this war than I normally am.

I can agree with not seeing the % unlocks as a demotivator but it also adds to the mystery/surprise, especially that first one! However the demotivation may outweigh that. Possibly for the first lock to have been hidden and the rest we then know after encountering the first lock, however that would only be for this war, for future wars we now have that heads up.

Possibly too difficult a puzzle to start with, but not too difficult a puzzle. Saying that though, the puzzles should probably have been taken into account in the war waves. There have been weekly releases that are just puzzles or a series of puzzles getting players to work together, now this is a war so the puzzles can't take as long as those other puzzles to solve, but equally they need to take time to solve as otherwise they won't be doing there job. As such that will of course slow the war down whilst the puzzle is being solved, interesting to see the surge after it was solved but was that enough to counter how long was slowed down (which as said slowing down in this instance is not a bad thing!).

^ I think that is probably the most important part.

Edit: @Neocrom, to also address your point, as Verly said this war is not filler (which actually now thinking about is even more interesting as I was thinking it was April Fool's event (I'm sure that's where we first met Lock and Key, though speculation around Maleurous as well), though I guess if it is April Fool's event that is an event rather than filler). I really want to see more of the main and side stories as well, especially because Tomix/Dove and Verly doe such a good job with them. I'm not a fan of the Inn, but I do not like grinds and such, show by my level even contrasted to my player ID - I have been around since the very start and played each (I think) release, but there are lots that do like it. The revamps and revists can be important because it is making things look better for newer players and it can be fun to revisit. Apart from the benefits of those two types of release though and those that like them, the important thing is it gives Verly and Dove a little breathing room, which still is at times not enough for them!

@Verlyrus

Despite me complaining earlier in this thread about the logic of the first puzzle
spoiler:

(which was when we all thought it was about going from "least flashy" to "most flashy", rather than thinking in binary)
, this is still the most interesting war I've taken part in so far (I didn't get to participate in the Caitiff saga wars or the Rift war when they were live). I've also gone through more waves than I ever have before (500+ so far), so I'd say you and Dove have definitely succeeded in piquing the interest of players like me who have experienced Lock and Key's shenanigans in the past. Furthermore, I've been a player since 2007 and just last night I decided to buy my first 1000 DC package, on top of the Dragon Amulet package I got last year, which further proves how great of a job you guys have been doing with regards to updating DragonFable and keeping players hooked!

Can't wait to see what revelations there will be at the end of this war! Battle On!
