Book 3: Aiding Mortem - The Pupa!
Hey hi hello!

This week, we're continuing (and concluding) the short quest chain Aiding Mortem, with the quest The Pupa!

[image]https://cms.battleon.com/DF/images/2025-07-19-ThePupaDN.png[/image]

As you, Katia and Saga find yourselves in the Plane of Elemental Spirits to investigate the case of the stolen souls... something is not quite as it seems.

Also this week, we have a cool new cosmetic cape available!

The ArchMage's Focus has been added to the DragonCoin Cosmetics shop! While it's meant to go with last week's ArchMage's Staff, heroes will always find a way to work it into any fashionable gear combo!

It's available for 400 Dragon Coins.

Furthermore, Verly has made a few fixes this week:
  • Summon Gem Trinkets no longer make the character kneel (fixes issue where Paladin wouldn't come back properly from being invisible)
  • Fixed an issue where the Honda's Legacy trinkets didn't have proper tooltips

Aaaaand that's all for this week!

Cool release. The pupa's pulsating did make my stomach churn a bit, but I get the feeling that thing would have turned into the Unraveler or something similar if it finished it's metamorphosis.

spoiler:

^ Oh for sure, that must have either been the Unraveler itself or perhaps one of its offspring

No Secundus schemes or Shapeless shenanigans here thankfully.

I'm also intrigued by the pieces of flavour text:
'You were allowed healing'
'It screams, but you cannot hear it, for it has no mouth'

What entity could have "allowed" us to heal? Who or what controls the Nic Paradigm?

And I gather from the obligatory I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream reference, that the strange eye in the sky may be trapped here against its will. This probably means it isn't the heal-allowing entity, but I guess we can't rule out them being one in the same.

A neat little two-parter! Nothing like some cryptic world-building to chew on before Book 4 begins.

Interesting developments

spoiler:

The pupa was certainly intriguing and as mentioned it most likely is related to the Unraveler. Whatever exactly it is though gives me pause given that it was feeding on human souls while in this pupa state. Typically, there is a larvae stage that does the act of feeding for insects that go through this stage of metamorphosis and yet this thing was still feeding to continue on with its transformation. It's certainly concerning because it likely means whatever adulthood looks like for this creature probably won't involve slowing down when it comes to feeding on souls. Curiously, given the involvement of the Void and this particular paradigm, it would appear this creature lacks access to the elements on its own given that it seemed to be targeting the elemental nature of the soul threads of those it consumed which if that is the case begs the question as to why it needs to feed on these aspects.

Another thing I find particularly troubling is both the uncertainty about the pupa's original place of origin and the presence of void creatures present within the Nic Paradigm. If they all slipped in from the Void, then what else might makes it way physically to the Plane of Elemental Spirits given enough time or perhaps already has made its way here?

In the end, thank the powers that be that nothing bad happened to Katia I was super nervous the second she showed up. Glad to see Saga made it as well, even though their soul has been tainted, though I do hope they don't get into too much trouble with the council for casting a forbidden magick.

Oddly enough this isn't the first time we've seen a giant orb with tendrils accompanying the Paradigms of the PoES. However, this is the first time, we've seen one with an eye and one with presumed sentience. Initially, I chalked this detail being unique to this new paradigm due to the influence of the Void and its bizarre life twisting effects, but what if that's wrong? What if each of these floating tentacle spheres possess some sort of mind of their own or perhaps are all the same entity but just from different lens of each elemental paradigm?

As for what "allowed" us to heal...couldn't even begin to guess though it is noticeable to method by which we healed has that all too familar mana color hue we've seen before. One of the few things with actual color in area too.
