Arena at the Edge of Time: The Test of the Cycle!
Hey there, heroes!

This week, the Chronology board has been updated with a new challenge: the Test of the Cycle!

[image]https://cms.battleon.com/DF/images/2026-03-06-CHRONOLOGY3dn.png[/image]

The Chronology board has been extended and a new pair of Chronomancers have arrived to test you! Take on the ShadowWalker of Time and the Avatar of Time in the Test of the Cycle!

Will you be able to outmaneuver their time-twisting tricks and emerge victorious? Earn a pair of cool Timeblade wings if you can succeed!

Head over to the Inn at the Edge of Time to face them!

Also this week, March seasonal items have arrived!

[image]https://cms.battleon.com/DF/images/promo-DCMarch2026dn.png[/image]

The Scythe of Dreams is available from the Book of Lore for 400 DCs, alogn with other March seasonal items.

There have also been a number of changes to the Book 2 Konnan fight in the Nightmares quest.
  • Konnan no longer has immobility resist, but stuns are now reduced to 1 turn on him.
  • The self-damage from missing has been doubled to 100% base damage.
  • Konnan no longer gains Boost when he misses (Still gains Bonus)
  • Other effects have had their power reduced.

That's all for this week!

Have yet to confront them as a duo (likely another Difficulty 3), but the fact that DoomKnight can blind confront them 1v1 is a potential hint of their difficulty being a bit lower than their previous companions. SWoT is the only one that managed to corner me while AoT vibed itself to oblivion despite "improvements" to a certain meme skill it has.

EDIT: attempted the duo with Paladin to at the least get the feel even though I would lose. Seems they have plenty moving parts that I managed to evade in the solos. All I can tell is SWoT is basically a non-critting CZ and AoT may also have conditional turns (uses a different skill/attack depending on the gamestate) alongside punishing you the more your HP goes below what it recorded for Temporal Reset.

Feels incredible that chaosweaver's cloak has finally been powercrept after over 7 years

God this board is so boring. Do we really need 4 fights that are just you fighting calendar classes? The quest descriptions aren't even interesting.

This fight is whatever. Cool reward I guess. Not looking forward for the inevitable Archivist (or Epoch, or duo) fight.

Edit: Doesn't help that this fight reuses music, none of which really fit the actual fights imo. This week ends up feeling like a filler release, as a result.

Yes. It lets other members of the team spend more time and effort on other projects.

I'm sorry this weekly releasing game with a small team isn't producing 3 new pieces of music every week.
Arena stuff was originally meant to be "filler". It's not going to be, and was never meant to be big story and lore revelations every month. I apologize if some of the bigger releases we've done in the past when we felt inspired misled anyone on this.

Like what, Book 2 Reimagined? Despite the fact that there are multiple threads here on the forum complaining about terrible characterization, only for two releases afterwards (Frostval and last weeks release) having some REALLY bad characterization from the Hero and the Professor. Not to mention people explicitly having had an issue with Wargoth's design and him only getting a simple recolor, when less egregious characters (Lilka) got an entire redesign and whole new art assets.

Or what, new side stories? We've had Dove's (the character) entire Draco subplot just sitting around, and it hasn't been touched in years.

Nor is anyone expecting DF to constantly get new tracks, but we haven't really gotten anything new music wise since The Unleashed.

And no one's expected Inn releases to be this, either. But the Inn is a really good way to bring back really old characters or reuse old assets in fun and creative ways, and the Chronology board doesn't feel like it's creatively using the classes to their best potential.

While your points may have substance @Jank, your frustrations are more borne out of sheer boredom. At this point, you should ask yourself why you continue to play this game and ought to cool off from social media for a bit. It's not like this is the first time a board is not too popular.

And if you are going to start attacking on the premise of the staffing count of the devs, then you've pretty much ran out of arguments. That is no longer a matter of opinion, but acceptance of reality.

Jet Silver -> RE: Friday, March 6th Design Notes: Arena at the Edge of Time: The Test of the Cycle! (3/7/2026 17:26:05)

I'll just say, I found the mechanics interesting, and I like the implications of them swapping parts and that killing the Shadowwalker first enables Avatar of Time to access their Doomed self pretty cool. I'm actually rather looking forward to the final lesson.

Laeon val Observis -> RE: Friday, March 6th Design Notes: Arena at the Edge of Time: The Test of the Cycle! (3/7/2026 23:33:04)

First time in a long while that I had to make an Excel spreadsheet to make sure fog of war doesn't rear its ugly head (last time I did was a now-outdated softcore Techno vs Pandora EX run). Had to monitor when to use which BDL skill in anticipation/retaliation with as much accuracy as possible. Those "potshots" from SWoT really add up when he's pissed that AoT got KO'd, not to mention how Consuming Shadows sets you back by turns (worst case is that it invalidates your onslaught throughout the time it is in effect).

Now that I realized it, the one fog of war I had was forgetting the part that SWoT's berserk state also causes the Doomsday timer to count down always.

@above, while it is the logical direction that the remaining two Chrono classes that'll be set for the final tests, it is very hard to imagine how they would do an Inn-carnation of the Epoch. Archi is pretty straightforward if albeit menacing in the damage output if we reference how we fight as one, but the artificer nature of Epoch to switch to 4 distinct styles (or 3, considering Base and Eternal Epoch are very similar to each other) is pretty difficult on the part of how do we get to have a glimpse of all the styles. The easiest would be that it has break bars (hard HP thresholding for anti-burst) compounded with a bloated HP total.

Unless of course we break the pattern and get to battle EDoT themselves. Even then that is better reserved probably as an anniversary match.

TFS -> RE: Friday, March 6th Design Notes: Arena at the Edge of Time: The Test of the Cycle! (3/8/2026 3:54:26)

This was actually a super fun fight. I really appreciated Reset; this is a very interactive mechanic that can be approached in a multitude of ways; defensive classes that try to squeeze a heal out of it are punished by causing the boss to heal, while offensive classes that want to burst AoT down are encouraged to play defense to prevent AoT from healing off some of their damage. Though do I wish the Reset punish was tuned up a bit more (maybe monster hp % instead of player hp %?), as the boss is vulnerable to burst and a stronger heal amount might represent a stronger disincentive for offensive classes to just keep attacking through it. In other words, classes that would struggle to resolve Reset aren't affected much by the punish, while classes that would be affected most by the punish don't struggle to resolve Reset. Comboing with SWoT's Doomsday is a fun escalation, though I wonder if having them be synched on every single use is necessarily something that makes the fight harder; it just makes it harder to resolve Reset at the expense of actually being able to kill you (since Reset immediately undoes Doomsday's damage), and as stated above failing to resolve Reset isn't a super huge punishment. Meanwhile is also fun new tech!
I also greatly appreciated how both of these bosses had a second phase after their partner is defeated; duo fights are usually 'over' once you kill the first enemy, but in this case the second phase is even more dangerous than the duo and there's a satisfying escalation of tension all the way until the end of the fight.

I personally do not find this board's theming very interesting, but the mechanics and fight design here are top-shelf.

Bluu -> RE: Friday, March 6th Design Notes: Arena at the Edge of Time: The Test of the Cycle! (3/8/2026 6:39:51)

While I agree with some of @GodJank's points, the way in which they are presented makes me want to disagree. Therefore, this post.

I might actually be alone on this lol, but I've always been a fan of this board. Test of Meanwhile is generally seen as a terrible fight, but even on release, I appreciated that it allowed and even encouraged the player to pull off creative strategies that were otherwise impossible. Test of Killing Time was a great fight - while on the easier side of fights, it was certainly a lot of fun to optimize and play around with. Test of the Cycle continues the creative streak and uses the fairly limited design space rather creatively to create a memorable battle, albeit still (imo) on the easier side.

I didn't think much of it when I first played and beat it, but I wanted to bring up how much I enjoy the dynamic boss rotations of Old Man of the Wastes from the previous release and ShadowWalker of Time from the current release. While quite frustrating to plan out on a spreadsheet, it does add some much-needed variance to a fight and require you to adapt during the fight even if you go into it with a solid plan. SWoT's Shadow Charges being based on damage dealt is a fun way to incorporate the mechanic into a battle rather than the class counterpart's mechanic of getting them with specific skills. I especially like that many of the Antumbral form skills are setup skills whereas the Umbral form skills either debuff you or deal the brunt of the damage, as it adds a layer of strategy on when to push him into Umbral form.

I like that he was designed with -300 Crit in mind, thereby allowing BPD spam as a more-than-viable means to avoid his attacks, and that his innate counter to this is his own Bonus buff, -MPM/BPD debuff, and his enrage upon the AoT's death. This allows him to have a variety of strong attacks or debuffs in quick succession without feeling too overpowering, which is nice imo. His Gear being an 8-turn -10 All is also great! Not super overpowering on its own, but adds a good amount of DPT to both the boss himself and his partner AoT. Any smart player should catch this and attempt to shield or purge the debuff.

I also love the implementation of Doomsday Clock. It's much better than the widely hated Claw/SetHP mechanic that has been used thus far and I am excited to see how this will be utilized in the future.

I also really like the long HoT he applies (Consuming Shadows) when he goes below 50% HP but only if he is in Antumbral form. This is a pretty interesting way of fattening up the boss because it isn't very oppressive:
- First off, if he goes below 50% HP while in Umbral form, you may still have a handful of turns to burst him down before he starts healing.
- Secondly, you can skip this mechanic entirely by bursting him from 7.5k HP and not having to worry about it - strategically playing around a scary mechanic by figuring out how to ignore it is actually still engaging with the mechanic, because it dictates how you approach the fight. I actually planned to kill him first because I thought Enraged Doomsday Clock would be super oppressive, but I decided to kill the AoT instead since I only had one use of Inner Darkness, which required me to then contend with Enraged Doomsday Clock. I thought that was pretty cool :)
- Third, in not being a one-time large heal, it does not disproportionately harm classes that cannot inflict large amounts of +Health onto their targets and allows them to instead use smaller but long-lasting forms of +Health like Hacked Magi Drone and Amalgam Blaster to deter it.
- Lastly, it makes the fight feel more fluid and responsive as compared to a hard damage gate into a forced 40% heal.
This might be a lot for a simple one-off mechanic, but I wanted to stress how much I appreciate that recent bosses are moving away from damage gates after the dumpster fire of Your Dragon! Acatriel's implementation of his second life, Kinnar's use of Mana Barrier, and now Consuming Shadows are all much better ways of fluffing up the boss than what the damage gates intended to do.

As for the AoT, I really like the implementation of its Doomed Timeline skill as a form of enrage after the defeat of the SWoT. It's a very creative use of design space and serves the additional function of effectively doubling his Boost/Bonus scaling feature. Meanwhile is a great effect and I'm very glad that this skill was used in such a creative way, for Dr. When's own fight also introduced unique mechanics but was a bit of a lackluster execution thereof, so I consider this to be his vindication. Drained Durability is a fantastic way of baiting the player to use a shield early and then opening them up to the trio of nukes. I wish I could say more about the reset mechanic, but I don't actually have much to say on that front haha

Overall, I really liked this fight even though I thought it to be on the easier side. Inn challenges have been quite mechanically interesting lately and it's increasingly clear that the developer has been attempting to apply all the feedback that the players had provided during the YD fiasco. Looking forward to next month. Apologies for the long post - thread started out a bit negative so I wanted to counterbalance that.

Jet Silver -> RE: Friday, March 6th Design Notes: Arena at the Edge of Time: The Test of the Cycle! (3/8/2026 8:36:02)

Gonna be silly and post my theory here, since there isn't so much lore for all the Chronos and I like theorizing lol

quote:

Gonna make a bold, random, and probably dumb theory:

Given the slight association with Doom, what is the ShadowWalker of Time exactly?

Well... We know post-reset Sepulchure went from being a Doom Spirit to a human... And the Reset in general could put one in the other box.

What if the Shadow Walker of Time is from a case where the opposite happened, for the hero, somehow, and they became a Doom Spirit after The Reset?

This could explain their abilities to slip into and hide within shadows.

And perhaps the Avatar of Time unlocks this skill after the Shadow Walker of Time is defeated, because they become bonded together after to boost her power, effectively turning her into a DoomKnight, and causing her to gain the ShadowWalker's horns and timeblades when she shifts... Making this the true nature behind the "Doomed Shadow" trait

I do wonder what making the Shadow Walker an "Avatar of Shadow" when the Avatar is defeated first technically entails though... [8|] I overthink these traits 'cause they're fun
