To get the fire started you have to finish the quest then go to the upper floor and come back down to see the fire burning in the chimney. Might be a bug though.

We automatically assume you use Gold (unless it says otherwise), since practically everything uses gold. ~In Media Res

well actually if you look at the red dragon or ice dragon which it stats clearly that it's gold

plus everything in the pedia either says: gold, tokens or donation fund
