aimed towards newer artists obviously.... i was bored :P

the gradient i used was incandescent.

if you don't like the end result and like a previous step better, just stop there.

how to:

copy visible

edit > copy visible
edit > paste
then in the layer menu (ctrl + l to open) make it a new layer by pressing the button at the bottom left

gradient map

ctrl + g
select gradient
colors > map > gradient map

and now for the actual tut...

examples:

Heh, If the Gitter wasn't so obvious this would be a better background.

i know its for begginers but try and do something new
and easy to do that people might not have known before.
that way more experienced artists learn things
and so do beginners because its easy.
an example is my watery effects tut, or zens mosaic grunge tut
they both provide a new idea, but also expand on it (obviously zens is better lol)
that way there is something for experienced artists to try and simple little things
for begginners to try.

its nice but try to expand, and come up with something new

trake: sorry, but no they cant. i said it was simple and it shows people how to make a background that isnt extremely boring.

sonic: please explain to what makes jitter so bad, because it doesnt look like horrible to me

dragon: perhaps if my goal here were to help expericenced artists as well i might have done a tut like that. but im tired of seeing new artists make one-tone backgrounds, backgrounds that are just a gradient, or backgrounds that a ton of brushes set on overlay. its better if you make it yourself, that way you have more control on how it turns out. and its not that hard to expand on smudging either.

i was thinking of what to say :\

and i would prefer helping beginners, seeing as they get less posts and need it much more.

Too true, but what about the middle people who are halfway to experienced?
I'm trying the tut now and might throwing in a bit of my magic (bad) touch.

depends on what level of skill youre defining as "experienced"

and its good that youre putting your own touch on it, tutorials arent usually meant to be followed exactly. theyre meant to teach new techniques, or at least give a new light to old ones.

This tut is perfect for teaching a smudge style and gradients.
You, my friend, are wrong.

You sure were bored. If you're gonna make a tut, don't make one just to sit there and float away. Because even beginners can do tuts much better than this.

I made my own one but I really couldn't be bother doing anything special also I don't really know how :)
Now advice would be tell them how to make a copy visible layer. Because all you said was copy visible and paste but not make a new layer.
Also how to make a gradient map.
Stex has got it right.

edit > copy visible
edit > paste
then in the layer menu (ctrl + l to open) make it a new layer by pressing the button at the bottom left

and for gradient maps

ctrl + g
select gradient
colors > map > gradient map

edit: and to show that you can make a sort of decent tag with a bg like this, heres something i did just now. took about 5 minutes.

i think that tag looks pretty good.
you could have included that in the tut.
that way beginnes could try something a little
more challenging and pick up a few more skills

I just made a quick one if you want to put it as an example as well, although the dragon takes up most of the tag...

Huzzaa, you should've shortened those e's in veeeeery, before they get munched by an AK/Mod. Nice tutorial. (Thanks for the entry, Sonic ;))

No problem, I'm using that tag in a competition on another forum anyway. Lol, I have to make more though.
Edit: No problem CD, making some more entries now.
