One of my predominant influences when I create art is that of the music I'm into at the time. I know that many of you are similar, so I ask the questions:

What music do you listen to when you create art? Is there a specific genre you listen to most? Do you look to music for inspiration? In which ways does music influence your art the most?

This thread is implicatively geared towards and originally thought of for those who create visual art, but it spans over all. You don't have to discuss my questions, the main topic is simply musical influence on your art.

I just set my iTunes playlist to random (while getting past all the songs I don't like) and let my artistic juices flow! Just kidding, I don't have many artistic juices nowadays.
Music influences my art tremendously. I don't like listening to classical music while I'm drawing, too boring. I listen to something loud and what my mom calls obnoxious. I've also noticed how stuff like Shut Your Mouth by Attack Attack! makes me draw weird stuff. It's kind of techno-ish.

Video game and Classic Rock themes are always prevalent in my playlist. That being said, I generally find that the video game scores capture an entire scene and multiple ideas while the classic rock ends up conveying solitary emotions and some phrases that work better individually.

There have been many times that I've heard lines in songs that I say "oh I gotta start a theme based on [said lines]," and end up evolving how the art looks as songs change. I have only once put a song on endless loop to keep its themes the sole focus of a piece of art, but there's no doubt about it in my mind - music is essential and extremely helpful in giving me the spark to finish up art, to inspire me to do something in my current project, and to possibly start new projects that evolve over time.

Well, what ever I listen to Always affects my Work.

-I noticed when I was in a Led Zeppelin rage, I used excessive Contrast, I would range the Dark and the Lights extremely, and I brought up a few New Ideas in Sig making.
-Whereas when all I would listen to is Pop, I'd make more of a Fancier and Effect plenty Signature.

so I guess Music is as Affective, as it is Inspirational.

I always listen to classical music when I'm making stuff. Helps calm my mind. That or just plain ol' rock. I guess it depends on my mood really, I like a lot of different genres of music.

When doing paintings or sketches AFK I only listen to instrumental music, mostly soundtracks.
When making things on the comp it doesn't matter, but a lot of the times I notice how what I'm listening to end up affecting whatever I'm working on a lot.

Sometimes when I'm really focused I prefer everything being quiet though.

I listen to music while making art but it has zero influence on me. However, sometimes I'll just say it does so it seems like I'm influenced to make stuff

It depends on the individual piece I am making, but generally I listen to music from the Stronghold games while drawing medieval-themed pieces. For pictures with a particular mood, I try to find a song that suits it the most. Sad pieces when I listen to sad music, angry pictures while listening to harsh music, etc...

(I recently listened to Chocolat from a bawdy anime, because it seemed apt for some romantic drawings I practiced. No, Chocolat isn't a bawdy song.)

I like your taste in music, son. As for me, I usually listen to music depending on the theme and genre of the piece I'm working on. For example, when drawing anything related to military and armies in general I listen to Red Army Choir and Soviet March. For anything else, I usually choose from classical pieces such as those prominent in Granado Espada to a huge variety of anime OSTs, particularly those done by Yuki Kaijura (Madoka, Kara no Kyoukai).

In fact, music plays one of the biggest part in my work as it is what draws out most of my inspiration.

Music is very much a important source of insperation for me. I usually stick to rock in preferences of music, but I won't limit myself to only it when I need insperation because it doesn't always work for what I'm drawing. I also find a lot of background music for games, movies and animes are really good at inspiring me for my pictures.

Progressive rock/metal is my usual artistic background music. It helps to get the poetic side of me to work with the imagination which in turn inspires concepts for art or literature. Sometimes I will listen to a song and think 'I need to do something based on that!'.

Usually, I use rather...lively songs currently. Fast beats and all that nice stuff, but I also use rather slow beat rock, like grunge, and such other music.

Fast beats usually equal out to a more active piece, while the slow beats equate to a relatively statue-esque figurine.

Well... I never actually listen to music while making things in GIMP. More-so alot of my inspiration comes from anime/game OST's, and other themes I've listened to. So I listen to something, and if I like it... I theme a signature with what the music has.

Like say... something calming. The image won't have a whole lot of action going on around it, but it would be more... tranquil.

If you haven't already, try listening to the music of Two Steps from Hell while making some art. I'm a strong supporter of the notion that everything you do feels more epic when listening to Two Steps from Hell.

Just to add, some of the characters who feature in my works have a particular set of songs to which I draw them best. Songs by Lady Gaga make me think of Melissa, the distressed damsel in my HeroSmash comic entry and "A Daft Rescue."

Chocolat? I feel that it suits Demolicious, as well as "Not One of Us" from the second Lion King film. If you ever played through her questline, you'd see why I think that last song suits her.

spoiler:

Demolicious had lied about protecting the Pandorian Malachite and failed in her mission. "Deception, disgrace..." ring a bell?

It's also implied that the other heroes won't listen to her after her failure, just like how Simba refused to listen to Kovu.

Music is what fuels me to go working, of course I got influenced from it.
I go listen to Touhou music, or in more extreme case, favorite Vocaloid song when I need to get off the boredom off my head.
Hmm, maybe my heavy taste on Japanese stuff is what influence me the most.

I am quite picky with music when drawing. Most of the time, it's Red, Skillet, Coldplay or Nickelback. At other times, when I am on the computer, it's a mix of Nickelback, Skillet, Creed, Red, Breaking Benjamin, Coldplay and some other picky-picky favourites. Almost always, I never take as long as 'til the end of the playlist :P

I don't like listening to music when I'm doing art. It almost always impacts what I draw and while that can be good while just sketching out when I'm bored, it's never helpful when I'm going for a particular effect/aesthetic (I've learnt that listening to rock music always makes me draw something with skulls and horns which doesn't help when I'm just trying to do the opposite of that)

Music really gets me going, and the melody itself gets my juices flowing whenever I'm making a drawing. For the past two years, it's mostly been Metal that's been getting me motivated in my drawings.

EDIT: Typos. :P

Yeah it depends on my mood and what it is im doing. But, video game music i can totally relate to on that note. Vomitron S.S.H P.S.O remix stuff or OST's of old games like Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger. Ive also found some Naruto music recently called Stalemate that really is getting me through this Gravelyn piece im doing now.

Well, recently I've been getting into actually making music, so yeah, I'd say other music has a pretty big influence on what I make. Considering that I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, listening to other songs is a great way to get my mind back on track when I'm trying to come up with something.
