Im a str mage (yeah dont hate) and that means i strike and bludgeon ALOT and i just lost to a lv 26 because he blocked and deflected all of my attacks where usually i would have killed some one with 97 health in 2 turns

If they made SA a non passive all of us would be happy

OMG!!Another SA hater!Ugh dont you people get it!STR builds FAIL against BH you all cant use STR builds and expect them to work just fine against BH.Its a 10% CHANCE to block and stun!Get over it we already got a stat requirement on it AND got the delfect chance removed. Now deal with it people no one cares about SA anymore.I am sick of this you people need to get a reality check really.I mean dont you think it could just be your dex being so much lower then theirs?

Didnt look at his dex to closely but i have 59 after stats and he also smoked me

If i dont get blocked i can usually take out 32s with ease

Well..
By smoking you .. he already takes your changes of blocking and increases his own.
Sounds normal... Plus, perhaps he had more dex.. normally the mages or Str build users have "low defenses and resistance" .

Inconceivable!

@Atomic garden: You only had 59 Dex (likely reduced to 30s after smokescreen) compared to his 52 Dex.

In that situation he already has 20% block rate before Shadow Arts is even taken into account. Assuming max SA, that gives him about ~30% block rate. That's not unusual you got blocked.

As a Strength Mage you have low Support, so you will be deflected a lot. You have to consider that when you make your build (just to add, Strength builds are very weak for TMs compared to BH and Mercenary Strength builds).

If your build is at fault, don't blame balance.

your build is what you should blame at ,not the game plus people these days DONT get high dex but rather LOW dex

Let me pull out the Blocking rate formulas from the old EDF...

quote:

ORIGINAL: Titan

The chance to block is determined by comparing the two players' Dexterity. So for example, if you have Player A and Player B:

Scenario 1:
Player A - Dexterity = 20
Player B - Dexterity = 20

Because both players have the same Dexterity, if Player A attacks Player B, Player B's chance to block Player A's attack will use "default" block odds.
(By default the chance to block is a reasonably low).

Scenario 2:
Player A - Dexterity = 35
Player B - Dexterity = 20

In this scenario, because Player A has significantly more Dexterity than Player B, when Player A attacks Player B, Player B will have a "below default" chance to block the attack (this exact calculation is a little complicated).

In the same scenario, when Player B attacks Player A, Player B will have a "below default" chance to connect.

NOTE: Currently, guns and many skills are currently unblockable

POST UPDATED 9-27-10
I've added to this section for many players that have requested more specific details on how blocks work. The system has not changed, I'm just adding further explanation about the calculations.

If the defender is stunned ... the defender has a 0% chance for a block

A block adjustment is calculated by taking the final dexterity values of both the defender and attacker. This block adjustment value can be either negative or positive.

Block Adjustment = (defender dexterity - attacker dexterity) / 2

Chance to Block = 15 + Block Adjustment

The chance to block can never be less than 4%
The chance to block can never be more than 50%

Example 1:
Defender has 100 Dexterity
Attacker has 60 Dexterity

Block Adjustment = (100 - 60) / 2 = 20
Chance to Block = 15 + 20 = 35%

Example 2:
Defender has 60 Dexterity
Attacker has 100 Dexterity

Block Adjustment = (60 - 100) / 2 = -20
Chance to Block = 15 + -20 = -5%
Since the block chance can never reduce below 4%, the Chance to Block becomes 4%

Example 3:
Defender has 30 Dexterity (Also, the defender has a -40 Dexterity Debuff Applied)
Attacker has 29 Dexterity

Dexterity never uses negative values in calculations ... so even though a debuff is applied, the Defender's dexterity value is calculated using the minimum value of 1 instead of -10.

Block Adjustment = (1 - 29) / 2 = -14
Chance to Block = 15 + -14 = 1%
Since the block chance can never reduce below 4%, the Chance to Block becomes 4%

A good rule of thumb is that for every 2 points of Dexterity you have more or less than your enemy, your chance to block increases or decreases by 1% respectively.

Now that I've provided the ACTUAL rates of blocking, now you can give a true judgment on blocking :P

As for myself, I will not devulge my opinions on this formula.

And yes I know, the quote is from a long time ago - However, the rates and formulas have always remained the same.

Actually PD the blocking rate was nerfed in a little while ago.

The base chance to block went from 15% to 10%, and the max chance from 50% to 45% (I'm unsure if SA can make it go above that).

quote:

The chance to block is determined by comparing the two players' Dexterity. So for example, if you have Player A and Player B:

Scenario 1:
Player A - Dexterity = 20
Player B - Dexterity = 20

Because both players have the same Dexterity, if Player A attacks Player B, Player B's chance to block Player A's attack will use default 15% block chance.

Scenario 2:
Player A - Dexterity = 35
Player B - Dexterity = 20

In this scenario, because Player A has significantly more Dexterity than Player B, when Player A attacks Player B, Player B will have a "below default" chance to block the attack.
Block Calculations

Block is calculated by adding the block chance adjustment to the default block chance (currently 10%).

Block chance = 10% + Block Chance Adjustment

The chance to block can never be less than 4% The chance to block can never be more than 45%

Block Chance Adjustment = (Defender's Dexterity - Attacker's Dexterity) / 2

Example 1:

Defender has 100 Dexterity
Attacker has 60 Dexterity

Block Adjustment = (100 - 60) / 2 = 20
Chance to Block = 10 + 20 = 30%

Example 2:

Defender has 60 Dexterity
Attacker has 100 Dexterity

Block Adjustment = (60 - 100) / 2 = -20
Chance to Block = 10 + -20 = -10%
Since the block chance can never reduce below 4%, the Chance to Block becomes 4%

Example 3:

Defender has 30 Dexterity (Also, the defender has a -40 Dexterity Debuff Applied)
Attacker has 29 Dexterity

Dexterity never uses negative values in calculations ... so even though a debuff is applied, the Defender's dexterity value is calculated using the minimum value of 1 instead of -10.

Block Adjustment = (1 - 29) / 2 = -14
Chance to Block = 10 + -14 = -4%
Since the block chance can never reduce below 4%, the Chance to Block becomes 4%

A good rule of thumb is that for every 2 points of Dexterity you have more or less than your enemy, your chance to block increases or decreases by 1% respectively.

As there's an active thread about this, and the previous poster gave a lovely and eloquent rebuttal, I'm locking this down.
