I swear if you post on this thread commenting on ym flash skillz works and compare to your Awesome coding and shading stuffz art... I might kill you :D

I would say it's easier to use RPGMXP, but flash is the best so far I would believe, or you could use a game purely from javascript like runescape

It really depends on what you want to do. I mean, it wouldn't be the greatest idea to create a 3D game in Flash (though isometric would work).

So, what do you have in mind?

Edit:

The most common methods I've seen here are (in no particular order):

RMXP/RMVX
Game Maker
Flash

Not as common but have appeared here in the past:

BYOND
Java
PHP/AJAX

It would be nice to see something new, though, like XNA Game Studio for C# programmers. Nevertheless, when you undertake something new or more challenging, there are fewer people here that can help you with it, I guess.

oh shhh ghosteh xP how did you know that ? huh huh? /offtopic

it all matters what you want to do, a top-down game like externia RPG [created by feral_john in multimedia section of the gallery] or DF , or 3d which you can use blender for it

DF/AQ/MQ type - flash
top-down bit pixelart graphics - RMXP/RMVX
3D- maya,blender,softimage XSI,C4D,milkshape,wings 3D, and tons of other ones

for starters i would suggest RMXP, then you can go to flash, or just go strait to flash, for 3D it will take significantly longer merely cause the tools and all have fancy names...
though in animation keyframes and frames will always be the same...... dont forget to visit the Sha- *gets hit by ghosteh*

Except for Blender, you cannot make a game with the 3D software's you've listed alone (Blender comes with a game engine). After you're done modeling, you'll need to make or acquire a 3D game engine with or without physics that usually requires quite a bit of advanced programming experience and so on. It's a very complicated process that I do not know much about but also do not recommend anyone try by themselves.

Eh, don't worry about it. I actually shouldn't have mentioned that bit; 3D hasn't really taken root on these forums, yet, and I'm trying to encourage more people to get into it. XD

Nomatter. Once I finish my 3D movie and no one has started one yet, I'll see if I can create a 3D game so that I can gain some experience and help people out. At the rate I'm going at, though, it'll be a while before then. <_<

so your saying start with RPGMXP? then Flash and then Blender or a 3D system?

its more personal when your entering the 2D world, it all matters of what you want to make, like RPGMXP is pretty much like those old games [Ahriman's prophecy is a good game , though graphics are solely based on pixels art] flash on the other hand will require more experience with drawing/animating/action scripting i personally thing RPGMXP takes less time than flash game [speaking from experience ]

Not only that is a pretty good top-down game, but the first few Final Fantasy games were all also Top-down.

If done properly, one could make a awesome game in RMXP.

But, remember; RMXP is only a trial of 30 days until you buy it.
As is Flash, flash is a 30 day trial and will require alot of coding and after the 30 days, costs ALOT to buy.

well i probably want to go with flash because i have been looking around at different games and the flash ones i like better but i wont be able to get flash for a while my hard drive doesn't have enough space.

Then your hard drive must be massively full or massively small, because Flash is under a gig (last I checked) :P

Yeah, starting with Flash is a good idea.

I'm rather opposed to RMXP and other "2D game engines in a box". They don't teach you as much as coding everything from the ground up.

Plus, Flash is fun, flexible, and there's a lot of room for innovation (and plenty of us to help you if you get stuck :])

If you want to make a game in flash, just remember, you can make a game in a .swf, but no one will be able to save it unless you have a server which costs some money (sometimes more than 1K)

ye, if you're making a flash game, you'll need to use lots of different files (otherwise the game gets slow), so aswell as buying flash, you'll also need to buy a website.

you can get some for free, but i would advise buying one (don't buy it until you've actually got a game).

Pffft since when can you not save flash data to your temporary files... (That was sarcasm for those who pm me not realizing.)

Let him get past the first few steps first: obtain Flash, learn how to use it, and plan the game out. While looking ahead is a good idea, looking too far ahead and listing all of the things one would have to do is daunting and quite frightening in my opinion. In other words, take it one step at a time and everything will fall into place. Take it all at once and you'll end up demoralized.

hucki and mo, you have to remember we aren't always talking about huge RPG n such flash is flexible , you dont always need a 16K server or/and an $15 a month domain , you know you can make small games like the games on ebilgames , though making RPG's are funner on the long run , once you got some basics up you keep on going up

though making any kind of game , it is a good accomplishment

though... *scary voice * listen to teh penndragon *woooooo*

It depends on what kind of games you want to make. You could make games with C, C++, Java, PHP and Javascript, Flash, etc. But I wouldn't reccomend RMXP;

I would rather go through all of the troubles of scripting a game than have RMXP do it for me. Then I could actually go around and say, "Oh yeah, I made that game!" lol than have the same generic graphics and systems as RMXP. And RMXP takes away most of the effort in making games, so... But also, this kind of irked me:

quote:

I would say it's easier to use RPGMXP, but flash is the best so far I would believe, or you could use a game purely from javascript like runescape

Though I don't play Runescape, it is made in Java, not javascript, and the difference between the two is VERY high; Javascript is used to spiff up web pages, though it can be used to make simple games, unless you really know how to hardcore script, then you could make a walk-around RPG game in javascript, which has been done before with a VERY good effect. But other than that, Java is used to script actual programs, which could be a game-engine, etc.

So please, don't EVER confuse Javascript and Java. lol
